  • India extends USD 527 million financial assistance to Mauritius towards Metro Express
    New Delhi [India] (ANI): The government of India has extended financial assistance to the tune of USD 527 million (USD 267 million as Grant and USD 260 million as Line of Credit) towards the Metro Express project in Mauritius, according to sources.The 26- km long Metro project is being implemented in two phases – Phase I connecting Port Louis and Rose Hill was completed and e-inaugurated jointly by the two Prime Ministers on October 3, 2019, according to sources. Phase II connecting Rose Hill to Curepipe is underway and is expected to be completed by December 2022. An interim part of Phase II i.e. between Rose Hill and Quatre Bornes (approx 2.7 km) was inaugurated by Mauritius Prime Minister on June 20, last year, according to sources.The MoU regarding Indian grant assistance for implementation of Small Development Projects in Mauritius were exchanged on Thursday.In view of the significant impact of the HICDPs (High Impact Community Development Projects) at the local level, MoU was drafted on lines similar to HICDP agreements concluded with some other countries.The projects under this MOU will relate primarily to socio-economic development, particularly the creation of infrastructure in the education, basic health-care and community development sectors.   • COVID-19 vaccination for children below 15 yrs to begin after scientific evidence: Centre
    New Delhi [India] (ANI): The Union Health Ministry will decide about COVID-19 vaccination for children less than 15 years of age only after scientific evidence, said Rajesh Bhushan, Health Secretary while addressing a press briefing on Thursday. “From January 16, 2021, COVID-19 vaccination has been started and rolled out based on scientific evidence and assumptions of protecting the most vulnerable people. So, as the scientific evidence evolved, we will be expanding the coverage of vaccination. We will take a decision on the basis of scientific evidence for below 15 years old children,” Bhushan said.Further, Dr VK Paul, Member (Health) Niti Aayog explained, “COVID-19 vaccination for 12 years old is our next goal. These decisions will only be taken after scientific information and scientific decision.   • BJP announces 59 candidates for Uttarakhand Assembly polls, drops 10 sitting MLAs
    New Delhi [India]: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced the names of candidates for 59 out of 70 seats in Uttarakhand for the upcoming assembly polls. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will contest the upcoming elections from Khatima. Dhami is two-time MLA from Khatima constituency. In the first list issued by the party, there are six women candidates. There are 14 Brahmin candidates, 22 Rajput candidates, 13 SC candidates while one candidate is from the ST community. Among the 59 candidates, 18 hold a postgraduate degree while 31 are graduates. BJP has also given tickets to an ex-serviceman, a doctor and seven farmers. Four spiritual leaders have also been given tickets. Notably, in the first list released today, 40 sitting MLAs have been given tickets while the party has dropped 10 sitting MLAs.     Mumbai [India]: The Indian equities markets key indices tumbled for the third straight day on Thursday dragged by heavy selling pressure in IT, financial and energy stocks. The benchmark Sensex has lost 1,844 points in the last three sessions, while Nifty 50 has slumped 552 points. Negative global cues and a sharp rise in crude oil prices in the international markets have dampened investors’ sentiments.The 30 stock S&P BSE Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at 59,464.62 points, which is 634.20 points or 1.06 per cent down from its previous day’s close at 60,098.82 points. The Sensex started the Thursday trade marginally down at 60,045.48 points, which also remained the highest level for the day. The index tumbled to a low of 59,068.31 points in the intra-day. The index has closed sharply down for the third straight day. The Sensex had lost 656 points and 554 points in the previous two sessions, respectively. The broader Nifty 50 of the National Stock Exchange closed at 17,757 points, which is 1.01 per cent or 181.40 points down from its previous day’s close at 17,938.40 points.   • India logs over 3.17 lakh COVID-19 cases; daily positivity rate 16.41 pc
    New Delhi [India]: India has logged 3,17,532 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours and the daily positivity rate stood at 16.41 per cent, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday. India reported 2,82,970 new COVID-19 cases with a daily positivity rate of 15.13 per cent yesterday.The weekly positivity rate stood at 16.06 per cent, as per government’s data released today. With the addition of new infections recorded in the country, the active cases mounted to 19,24,051. As per the ministry, the active cases account for 5.03 per cent of the total cases. In the last 24 hours, 2,23,990 recoveries were reported, With this, the total recoveries climbed to 3,58,07,029. Consquently, the recovery rate is currently at 93.69 per cent. The number of people who succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours is 491. The death toll is at 4,87,693. The country has so far registered 9,287 cases of COVID-19 variant Omicron. There is an increase of 3.63 per cent in its cases since Wednesday, as per the ministry. To detect the presence of the virus, 19,35,180 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours. Since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, 70.93 crore tests have been conducted. Meanwhile, in the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination drive, 159.67 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far.   • India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage surpasses 159.67 crores
    New Delhi [India] (ANI): With the administration of over 73 lakh COVID-19 vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s cumulative vaccination coverage has exceeded 159.67 crore, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday. As per government data, 73,38,592 vaccine doses were administered to eligible population in the last 24 hours. Consquently, the total vaccines administered so far mounted to 1,59,67,55,879, as per provisional reports till 7 am today.This has been achieved through 1,71,82,273 sessions, the ministry said in a statement. The government data reveals that 61,75,049 precaution dose of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. Of these, 22,95,385 doses were given to healthcare workers, 20,16,534 doses to frontline workers and 18,63,130 doses to those above 60 years of age with coomorbidities. To children aged between 15-18 years, 3,84,93,979 vaccine doses have been given so far. The vaccination of this age group was started on January 3, this year.     Kathmandu [Nepal](ANI): With 11,352 cases being reported in the last 24 hours, Nepal recorded the highest COVID-19 single-day spike since the pandemic began, according to official data. According to the daily update provided by the Ministry of Health and Population a total of 18,078 samples were tested for contagion using the Real-Time- Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) method.Out of tested, using RT-PCR 9,502 samples resulted positive for virus while 1,850 samples confirmed infection after 5,331 samples using antigen method. With four coronavirus-related death reported in the past 24 hours, the cumulative death toll in the country reached 11,628. Along with this, 613 people have recovered from the virus while the number of active cases in the Himalayan nation stands at 47,929 in the nation. Nepal on Tuesday reported 8,730 new PCR confirmed coronavirus cases.     New Delhi [India]: India reported 2,82,970 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours with a daily positivity rate of 15.13 per cent, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed on Wednesday. The fresh infections are 2,369 more than yesterday. On Tuesday, India logged 2,38,018 fresh COVID-19 cases.With the addition of new cases, the total cases of COVID-19 in India rose to 3,79,01,241 including 18,31,000 active cases. Active cases account for 4.83 per cent of the total cases. The country has so far detected 8,961 cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. As per the health ministry, there is an increase of 0.79 per cent in Omicron cases since yesterday. The daily positivity rate is at 15.13 per cent while the weekly positivity rate is 15.53 per cent. Meanwhile, the country’s recovery rate stands at 93.88 per cent. The ministry said that 1,88,157 people recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the recovery tally to 3,55,83,039. The country also witnessed 441 new COVID-related deaths in the last 24 hours. As many as 4,87,202 people have succumbed to the infection so far.     Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], (ANI/Xinhua): Malaysia recorded 3,245 new COVID-19 infections over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 2,813,934, according to its health ministry. The new infections included 274 imported cases and 2,971 local transmissions, showed data released on the health ministry’s website.An additional nine deaths from the pandemic were recorded, bringing the total death toll to 31,818. The health ministry also reported 3,093 new recoveries from COVID-19, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,741,355. Currently, 40,761 active cases have been reported in Malaysia, with 183 of them held in intensive care units, and 84 of them in need of assisted breathing. The country administered 129,597 vaccine doses on Tuesday. Speaking to ANI, Dr Younus, top infectious disease expert, said, “We should learn to live with COVID-19. It doesn’t mean dropping our guard against COVID-19. We should get vaccinated or get a booster dose in order to avoid a high-risk situation. Going to a concert or to a bar may not be essential but taking care of our parents is important.”He also emphasized on wearing good quality masks and getting vaccinated which will help people in keeping high-risk situations at bay. “So as long as we continue to get vaccinated and wear good quality masks, then we can live with it.     New Delhi [India](ANI): The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted pre-arrest bail to actor and model Poonam Pandey in a case related to a porn films racket also involving Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundra. A Bench of Justices Vineet Saran and BV Nagarathna issued notice on the appeal filed by Pandey challenging the November 25, 2021 order of the Bombay High Court which had declined her plea for anticipatory bail.The Bench said, “No coercive action against the appellant.     Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], (ANI): Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Monday said the state has vaccinated all school students aged between 15-18 years with the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. “100 per cent of school students between 15 to 18 years in Tamil Nadu have been inoculated with the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine,” Subramanian said while addressing reporters.COVID-19 vaccination for the 15-18 age group began on January 3 across the country. On Sunday, the Tamil Nadu government had informed that schools have been shut in for all classes, due to an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state. “The exams which were supposed to be held on January 19 are now postponed,” informed the order copy. Tamil Nadu recorded 23,989 new COVID-19 cases and 11 fatalities on Sunday, as per the state health department’s bulletin. Supanida Katethong reigned supreme in the first game and did not give Sindhu any chance.   • Covid Report : India reports over 2.68 lakh fresh cases, 402 fatalities in last 24 hours
    New Delhi [India]: India recorded 2,68,833 fresh COVID-19 cases and 402 fatalities in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday. The fresh infections are 4,631 more than yesterday. On Friday, India logged 2,64,202 fresh COVID-19 cases.With the addition of new cases, the total cases of coronavirus in the country rose to 3,68,50,962 including 14,17,820 active cases. Active cases account for 3.85 per cent of the total cases. Of the total infections reported till date, 6,041 cases of Omicron variant of COVID-19 have been detected so far which is an increase of 5.01 per cent since yesterday. As many as 16,13,740 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours wherein a daily positivity rate of 16.66 per cent was observed. Further, 70.07 crore total tests to detect the presence of the virus in individuals have been conducted so far in which a weekly positivity rate of 12.84 per cent was observed. However, the death toll of those infected with the virus reached 4,85,752 with 402 more fatalities, the health ministry said. Also, 1,22,684 new recoveries were reported in the last 24 hours thereby taking the total tally to 3,49,47,390. The recovery rate is currently at 94.83 per cent. Starting next week, there are likely to be no commercial flights bound for Beijing ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, reported CNN. Beginning January 19 and continuing for at least two weeks, all flights from the United States to China have either been cancelled or are likely to be suspended because of Chinese aviation regulations, according to CNN Business research of government announcements and published flight schedules. As of Friday, only two flights still appeared eligible to operate for that period, one of them with United Airlines (UAL). The Beijing Winter Games open on February 4, and participants are mostly taking special flights restricted to people with Olympics credentials as part of a strict bubble that authorities are implementing around the event, reported CNN. Since June, the Civil Aviation Administration of China has applied a so-called “circuit-breaker” rule to international flights.   • COVID-19: Schools in Madhya Pradesh to remain closed from Jan 15-31
    Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India](ANI): Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, all government and private schools in Madhya Pradesh will remain closed for students of classes 1-12 between January 15-31. The decision was announced by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan after he held a meeting with the crisis management group on Friday in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.The chief minister further said that all political, religious gatherings and fairs will be banned in the state till further orders. However there is no ban on Makar Sankranti ‘snan’ (Holy bath), he added. “The state administration has banned all political and religious rallies. However, programmes can be held in the hall, with less than 50 per cent seating capacity,” said Chouhan. “No audience will be allowed during professional sports activities in the state,” he added. Further, the pre-board exams which were supposed to be held from January 20 in the state will now be conducted through online mode and will be given by the students from their homes.     By Ashoke Raj New Delhi [India]: Hundreds of lives were saved on Sunday after a major collision between two Emirates planes was averted during take-off at Dubai airport.EK-524 Dubai to Hyderabad was scheduled for take-off at 9:45 PM and EK-568 Dubai to Bengaluru Emirates flight was also scheduled to take off for its destination. Unfortunately, the two aircraft that were scheduled for take-off came on one runway. According to the Emirates flight schedule, there is a five-minute gap between the departure times of both flights. “EK-524 from Dubai-Hyderabad was accelerating for take-off from runway 30R, when the crew saw a aircraft coming in the same direction at high speed. Take-off was immediately instructed by ATC to be rejected. The aircraft slowed down safely and cleared the runway via taxiway N4, which crossed the runway. Another emirates flight EK-568, from Dubai to Bangalore, was rolling for departure was to take-off from same runway 30R,” a person aware of the incident told ANI. After the ATC intervention, Bengaluru-bound Emirates flight took off and the Hyderabad-bound Emirates flight went back to the taxi bay and took off a few minutes later.     Madurai (Tamil Nadu) [India]: Jallikattu competition began today at 8 am amid the increasing number of COVID-19 cases. Amid loud whistles, applause and cheers at Avaniyapuram village in Madurai district, as many as 300 bulls were let out into the arena of bull tamers.The Tamil Nadu government had allowed Jallikattu with 300 bulls and 150 spectators. However, hundreds of villagers gathered on roofs and outside the barricades at Avaniyapuram to watch the events. During the event, one participant suffered from a respiratory problem and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. A bull owner said, “Coronavirus is quickly spreading in the state.     New Delhi [India]: India reported 2,64,202 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours with a positivity rate of 14.78 per cent, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed on Friday. The fresh infections in the country are 6.7 per cent higher as compared to yesterday’s figures as India reported 2,47,417 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday.Of the fresh infections added today, Maharashtra reported 46,406 new COVID-19 cases, Delhi reported 28,867 new COVID-19 cases, Karnataka reported 25,005 new COVID cases, Tamil Nadu reported 20,911 new cases, West Bengal reported 23,467 new cases, Uttar Pradesh added 14,765 fresh COVID-19 cases, Kerala reported 13,468 new cases and the rest of the cases were added by other states. With the addition of new cases, the total cases of COVID-19 in India rose to 3,65,82,129 including 12,72,073 active cases. Active cases account for 3.48 per cent of the total cases. With 17,87,457 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, a daily positivity rate of 14.78 per cent was observed which is also slightly higher as compared to yesterday. On Thursday, the positivity rate was at 13.11 per cent. Further, the weekly positivity rate touched 11.83 per cent in the country as 69.90 crore total tests have been conducted so far.   • Jalpaiguri train derailment: NDRF dispatches two teams; 6 dead, 20 injured
    New Delhi [India], (ANI): The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has rushed two teams to rescue passengers trapped after multiple bogies of the Guwahati-Bikaner Express (15633) derailed in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Thursday. According to initial reports 3 people were killed and 20 injured in the mishap. The incident took place near Domohani (West Bengal), this evening. Soon after, NDRF Director General Atul Karwal directed the dispatch of two teams to rescue people.“NDRF’s two teams have been dispatched and will reach shortly,” NDRF Director General told ANI. Some estimates suggest that as many as 12 coaches suffered damage when the derailment took place. Indian Railways confirmed three deaths and injuries to 20 people in the accident. It said that the injured have been taken to Jalpaigudi District Hospital and New Moinagudi district hospital. The train that originated from Bikaner in Rajasthan was heading to Guwahati in Assam via Patna when the accident took place near Domohani in Jalpaiguri around 5 pm on Thursday. The train was merely passing Jalpaiguri at the time of the incident.
