Harare: Zimbabwe hit a new record in COVID-19 cases on Monday, registering 2,661 cases in the past 24 hours as the third wave of the pandemic sweeps through the country.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, all the 2,661 cases were due to local transmission and pushed Zimbabwe’s cumulative total to 70,426.
The country also recorded 51 deaths on Monday, raising the national death toll to 2,236.
Out of the 70,426 cases, 46,932 people have recovered from the virus.
Less than 1 million people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Zimbabwe, against a target of 10 million people by year-end. The government aims to inoculate 60 per cent of the population (10 million) people to achieve herd immunity.
To date, Zimbabwe has received several batches of Chinese vaccines to ramp its national vaccination program.
The last batch of Sinovac doses arrived in the country last Thursday.
