The riots of 1984 are one of the important events recorded in the history of not just Punjab but the world. The Sikh massacre of 84 is undoubtedly one of the most sensitive topics, and thus, making a movie on this subject is not a faint heart’s job. However, years back Anurag Singh took the courage to present the impact of 84 on social life with his movie ‘Punjab 1984’. And, now Smeep Kang has stepped forward to bring forth the story of those who were left behind, the story of the widows of the 1984 martyrs. The title of Smeep Kang’s period drama is ‘Widow Colony’, which recently got a release date. It will be hitting the big screens on June 3, 2022.
Check out the new poster of ‘Widow Colony’ with the release date:
The title is inspired by a real place in Delhi, which was allotted by the government as a shelter to thousands of families whose life took a 360-degree turn after the Sikh Genocide of 1984. The colony is in Tilak Vihar, and it is called the ‘Widow Colony’.
Further, Smeep Kang is not only the director of the movie, but he has also penned the story. And while writing the tale he made sure that Punjabis throughout the globe can relate and feel the hardship of the survivors and the things that went down during the respective period. Perhaps that is why the movie has a subtitle that reads – “1984” ਜਿਸਨੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਬ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਖੋਹ ਲਏ” (1984 who took away our husbands and dreams).
Coming to the star cast of the movie, reportedly, Gippy Grewal and Gurpreet Ghuggi will be seen playing pivotal roles in the film. Details regarding the rest of the cast are under the wraps, but we are hoping the same will be disclosed soon.
