West Bengal: CM not Guv to be Chancellor of all State Universities, claims Minister

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India]: The West Bengal Cupboard on Thursday provided its nod to present an expense to change the guv with the chief minister as chancellor of all state-run universities, informed education and learning preacher Bratya Basu.  The relocation is viewed as a fallout of the long-running battle between chief minister Mamata Banerjee and guv Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Presently, the Guv is the Chancellor of all State Colleges. According to the governor’s official website, Dhankar is the ex-officio chancellor of 17 colleges in Bengal.

While dealing with press reporters, Basu claimed, “Today we have taken a decision that all state-run universities will have the CM – and also not Guv – as the Chancellor. This will be required to the Assembly for the Act to be changed.”

The relocation has actually attracted sharp objection from the BJP.

Banging Mamata Banerjee over the choice, BJP leader Amit Malviya on Thursday termed the step an “attack on federalism” and also called it “one more attempt to escape liability and openness”.

Speaking with Media, Amit Malviya said, “It is one more attempt of the Mamata federal government to evade responsibility and also transparency. There are currently many vice-chancellors that were designated in the state Universities as well as that are going through hearings in the High Court. This is controversial. Such people have actually been selected as VC who don’t have the credentials to be on the article.”

” This choice of the government will give it total hegemony over the Universities after which the government won’t be mandated to answer the inquiries elevated by the Guv,” he affirmed.
