Japan tops G-7 chart with highest fully vaccinated population

Tokyo [Japan]: Topping charts among the Group of Seven industrialized nations (G-7), Japan has so far vaccinated 75.7 per cent of its population with two COVID-19 shots, reported local media.
Japan has successfully immunized its 125 million populations with two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, reported Kyodo News citing government sources. Leaving Canada behind, which earlier was at the top with a 75.5 per cent vaccination rate, Japan has left behind other G-7 nations including the US, Germany, France, and Britain.
According to the government records, 195.32 million COVID-19 vaccination shots have been administered so far, with 99.4 million having received the first shot, reported Kyodo News. Among the people of age group 65 and above, over 91 per cent are fully vaccinated.
With ramped-up vaccination drive in Japan, which commenced earlier this year has resulted in the significant plunge of new COVID-19 cases. Coming down from the peak of 25,000 in a day, reported in August this year, Japan reported merely 163 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, reported Kyodo News.
Citing government sources, Kyodo News reported that Japan has been witnessing a lesser number of severe COVID-19 cases, coming down to 76 on Thursday.
While Canada has vaccinated the maximum number of people (79 per cent) with the first vaccination dose. Eight countries including Spain and Singapore, which are not a part of G-7 have a higher score of fully vaccinated population, that is 80.2 per cent and 91.9 per cent, respectively, reported Kyodo News.

Mumbai, Bangalore and London named among World’s top startup hubs

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]: London, Mumbai and Bangalore have featured among the world’s top startup hubs, according to a comprehensive ranking of international startup hubs compiled by Startup Genome for its annual Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2021.
Despite Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic, London maintained its second-place ranking tied with New York for the second year in a row. Bangalore also ranked in the top 30 global tech hubs (#23 globally) and Delhi made it into the top 40 list, coming in at 36th. Mumbai maintained its first position in the Emerging Ecosystems ranking (ecosystems in earlier stages of growth that have high potential to be global performers in the future), outperforming other fast-growing ecosystems in areas of funding, performance, market research, and talent.
Released to coincide with London Tech Week, the largest tech event in Europe, the report ranks the leading 140 startup ecosystems based on seven success factors including Performance, Talent and Connectedness.
The findings revealed that London is the most attractive destination to set up a tech startup outside of Silicon Valley, with an overall ecosystem value of USD 142.7bn. London has risen up the league table in the last few years, climbing from number eight in 2012 when the first rankings were released to number two in 2020. Silicon Valley held onto the top spot this year while Beijing and Boston came in fourth and fifth respectively.
The research shows that Indian startups raised USD 12.1 billion in the first half of this year, demonstrating the rapid growth of India as a global hub for tech and innovation. As of August 2021, India has produced 24 unicorns in 2021, including 6 in just 4 days in April.
The city of Bengaluru and the surrounding state of Karnataka is also the world’s 4th largest technology and innovation cluster and home to more than 400+ global R&D centres. Alongside Mumbai, a number of other Indian hubs made it into the ‘Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems’ list, including Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad.
The findings also revealed London is one of the best cities in the world for access to funding and quality and activity in the investment ecosystem (referring to the number of local investors, investor experience and their level of activity).
London has already seen record levels of VC tech investment this year, with the UK capital’s tech startups receiving USD 13.3bn in the first seven months (January to July), more than the USD 10.9bn raised in the whole of 2020.
London’s impressive start to 2021 has been boosted by major funding rounds for Revolut (USD 800m), (USD 450m) and Hopin (USD 400m). Bangalore’s ranking was also boosted by healthy access to growth capital, demonstrated by recent large funding rounds from food delivery platform Swiggy (USD 1.3bn), social media company ShareChat (USD 502m) and edtech firm Byju (USD 460m).
Compared with other international tech hubs, the research found that startups in London have access to deeper pools of capital, with an average seed round of USD 653k, ahead of the global average of USD 494k. London is currently home to over 1,370 VC firms – more than any other European city, providing access to a vast network of investors and a depth of capital in the ecosystem.
A number of global investment firms have also increased their presence in London recently, with Index Ventures announcing a USD 3.1bn fund for European start-ups in July and the news that Silicon Valley based VC Sequoia Capital had expanded its footprint in the UK capital.
London is also recognised for its world class talent pool, with the city ranking highly across the board for quality and access to Tech and Life Sciences talent. With four of the world’s top ten universities located in or close to London, the city is home to 484k software developers as well as a high number of Life Sciences-focused universities and degree programmes.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said, “London is a fantastic place to grow and scale a global tech business. We celebrate the diverse, international nature of our tech ecosystem and it is great to see our thriving start-up community being recognised in this report.
London’s tech sector has a pivotal role to play as we rebuild from the pandemic, and I am excited to be part of London Tech Week to discuss how our tech community can work with other start-up hubs to solve global challenges. In the face of Brexit and the global pandemic, London has demonstrated its resilience and proven itself once again to be one of the best places globally for tech innovations and start-ups.”
Janet Coyle, Managing Director Business Growth, London and Partners said, “India and London have shared strengths in technology, innovation and entrepreneurship and today’s report findings demonstrate the abundance of opportunities for Indian tech companies looking to London for international expansion. For startups and high growth companies considering global expansion, London has access to high levels of funding, talent and customers all in one city. As one of the world’s leading hub for innovation, there is huge opportunity for London to collaborate with other fast-growing startup hubs like Bangalore and Mumbai.”
JF Gauthier, Founder & CEO of Startup Genome said, “Entrepreneurs, policymakers, and community leaders in Asia have been working hard to build inclusive innovation ecosystems that are engines of economic growth and job creation for all. The Global Startup Ecosystem Report is the foundation of knowledge where we, as a global network, come together to identify what policies actually produce economic impact and in what context.”
While the US and China have long been considered the global superpowers for startups and tech, the pandemic has accelerated the democratisation of startups, and Europe is quickly cementing its position on the global stage. The report shows Europe accounts for 17 per cent of the top 30 ecosystems this year, with London the only European city to make the top 10 list. Asian ecosystems also continue to rise in the rankings, with Tokyo (from #15 to #9), Seoul (#20 to #16), Shenzhen (#22 to #19), Bengaluru (#26 to #23), and Hangzhou (#28 to #25) moving ahead.
Poppy Gustafsson, Founder and CEO at Darktrace, said, “At Darktrace, we are proud to be building on the UK’s rich heritage in tech and innovation. Being part of the UK’s tech ecosystem affords us access to a vast network of investors, researchers and talent and has been instrumental in building a successful AI business and – in particular – advancing our leading position in Self-Learning AI. I’m thrilled to be an ambassador for London Tech Week, a fantastic opportunity not only to celebrate the UK’s achievements thus far, but to drive our industry forward.”
The release of the latest Global Startup Ecosystem Report coincides with London Tech Week, bringing together the global tech community to address how tech can solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Key speakers throughout the week include Hilary Clinton, former US Secretary of State, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, Co-founder and CEO at Klarna, Alex Mahon, CEO at Channel 4 and Maria Raga, Founder and CEO at Depop.

How Lack Of Ambition Can Negatively Impact Your Relationship

Not for nothing is it said that it is only by living with and understanding a person that can help build a strong relationship. very often we do not have that luxury of living with the person we want to pursue a relationship with, but when we do, one aspect that is oft ignored is ambition. Ambition in a relationship is essential as it keeps things exciting and lively between the couple.

Being ambitious is important in life as well, as it is the goal and ambition that makes one work hard towards a better life. Being ambitious about a career choice, a relationship, or even a hobby can bring about so much personality.

Here are some ways in which lack of ambition can have negative impact on your relationship:-

Makes prioritizing Difficult

In a relationship, if one partner is ambitious and the other is laid back, then prioritizing goals can be a challenging task. One will always want to upgrade, while the other will prefer sticking to the obvious. A lot of times, if not always, being on the same page is important for the growth of a relationship. A shift in priority can take place when people have differing ambition levels.

Gets You Stuck On The Mundane

Everybody likes an upgrade in their lifestyles. Being ambitious makes a person strive every day and make the best of their opportunities. Lack of ambition can make a person so comfortable with their current lifestyle that it becomes mundane and even boring. If a partner lacks ambition in their relationship, they will stop making an effort to impress their partner, either emotionally or even professionally.

Leads To Incompatibility

Having differences in a relationship regarding goals and ambitions can cause arguments to arise. It can be a sign that your partner and you disagree on things that might seem important to you but are not treated in the same way by your partner and vice versa. This could be a sign of alarming incompatibility. In the long run, even the small arguments regarding incompatibility can cause a rift in the relationship.

Creates Lack Of Adventure

When a relationship lacks ambition, the adventure or the high automatically dies down. Partners can stop taking the initiative to bring nuances to the relationship, and eventually, it just becomes plain and boring. That is not something people often expect and look for in a relationship. Instead, take turns in spicing up your relationship in ways you both deem fit. Try new activities, hobbies, and discuss a lot — that often gives you a deeper understanding of your partner.

Kills Motivation

Often, being around someone who lacks ambition can bring you down too. It can kill your productivity and your will to thrive for more and better. Being in command can be challenging in such situations, and staying motivated can seem like a task. This could lead to resenting your partner and holding grudges. Don’t let that kill the ambition of your life, instead, work your way around the same and get to the solution.

Sonam Kapoor Gets Emotional On Reuniting With Anil Kapoor: Watch Video

Sonam Kapoor returned to Mumbai from London on Tuesday, and her father Anil Kapoor came to the airport to receive her. She got emotional as she reunited with him after several months.

In a video shared online by a paparazzo account, Sonam Kapoor was seen waving to the photographers as she walked out of the airport terminal. She then saw Anil Kapoor and greeted him with, “Hi, dad.” She then broke down as they walked to their car.

Sonam has been living in London with her husband Anand Ahuja for a while now. She spent the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic in Delhi and Mumbai, and returned to London in July last year. Earlier this year, she shot for her upcoming thriller, Blind, in Scotland.

In April, Sonam posted a photo with Anand from London and talked about how she has been ‘desperately’ craving to return to India.

Meanwhile, Anil, in a recent interview said, “Like every parent everywhere, Sunita (my wife) and I miss our kids when they are away, and we worry about them constantly. But we also recognize that we’re fortunate to live in the age of technology that enables us to see them and speak with them whenever we get anxious, and that’s been a huge relief.”

Sonam was seen in a cameo in AK vs AK, starring Anil and Anurag Kashyap in the lead roles. She played a fictionalised version of herself in the film, which also featured her brother Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor in a guest appearance. Previously, Sonam and Anil starred together in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga.

Meanwhile, Sonam will be seen next in Blind, a remake of a Korean crime-thriller. In an Instagram post earlier this year, she called it an ‘insanely hard but creatively satisfying film’. The film is directed by Shome Makhija.

Shraddha Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor To Resume Shoot For Luv Ranjan’s Next

On Tuesday, the star cast of Luv Ranjan’s untitled film reached Delhi for the shoot of the film. Lead stars Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor were spotted in the Capital, along with Boney Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia.

The film’s shoot had started in January at a private property in Noida, and they were expected to shoot through March, however, it was rescheduled due to COVID restrictions. A source informs, “The shoot of the film will resume this week and the cast will be in Delhi for around 15 days.”

Another source says,”This is the first major film project being in shot in NCR after restrictions were lifted last month. Line producers say that as the number of cases go down, shooting is expected to resume in full swing in NCR.”

“Currently, due to decrease in number of cases, permission is not a big issue, as long as the crew is limited to 20-30 people. Two other major projects are also scheduled for month end,” informs an insider.

Elon Musk: Tesla Would Have Died, If I Wasn’t The CEO

Tesla would have died, if he wasn’t the CEO – this is what famous EV company boss Elon Musk told to a court defending his position in the Tesla-SolarCity deal.

Musk also insisted in court that the company is controlled by the board, not himself. The lawsuit filed by the union pension funds and asset managers alleges that Elon Musk strong-armed Tesla’s board of directors into depleting the company’s assets with the $2.6 billion all-stock deal for the SolarCity.

During the deal with SolarCity, Elon Musk owned a roughly 22% stake in Tesla. This means he had no controlling stake in the EV manufacturer. Some Tesla shareholders alleged that the SolarCity deal was aimed at bailing out the company, where Musk had an investment.

The Tesla shareholders claimed in the lawsuit that the money invested in SolarCity must be paid back. Tesla shareholders accused Elon Musk of dominating the EV maker’s board with deal discussions. They alleged that Musk influenced Tesla’s board to buy SolarCity despite it being a weak deal for the company.

This lawsuit kicked off a two-week trial in Wilmington, Delaware. Elon Musk had to appear before the court for the case.

Appearing before the judge Musk said that he has tried very hard not to be the CEO of Tesla. “But I have to or frankly Tesla is going to die,” Musk further said to Judge, reports Reuters. Other Tesla board members and people involved in the Tesla-SolarCity deal will testify on Tuesday. Musk too will return to the witness stand.

Single Dose Of Sputnik-V Vaccine Enough For Recovered Covid-19 Patients: Study

A day after scientists announced that mRNA vaccines are effective against the Delta variant of Covid-19, a single dose variant of Russia’s Sputnik-V vaccine has shown 94 per cent efficacy among those recovered Covid-19 patients. Scientists said that there is no evident benefit of using a second dose in previously infected individuals.

However, they added, “the second dose further increases antibody and neutralizing capacity.”

The study published in the journal Science Direct states that 21 days after receiving the first dose of vaccine, 94 per cent of participants developed spike-specific antibodies. The study was conducted among healthcare workers in Argentina.

“A single Sputnik V dose elicits higher antibody levels and virus neutralizing capacity in previously infected individuals than in new ones receiving the full two-doses,” researchers said.

Earlier, a study by Hyderabad’s AIG Hospitals had also claimed that a single dose of vaccine is sufficient for Covid-recovered patients on account of their robust antibody response. The study was conducted on 260 healthcare workers who got the Covishield vaccine between January 16 and February 5.

Developers of Sputnik V had in June claimed that the vaccine is around 90 per cent effective against the highly contagious Delta variant. Denis Logunov, deputy director of Moscow’s Gamaleya Institute, which developed Sputnik V, said the Delta variant efficacy figure was calculated based on digital medical and vaccine records, the RIA news agency reported.

Sputnik V is the third vaccine to be used in India’s massive vaccination drive after homegrown Covishield by the Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin. While Sputnik Light was approved for emergency use in Russia in May, with an efficacy rate of 79.4 per cent, discussions on granting it emergency use approval in India are currently on.

The vaccine uses the SARS-CoV-2’s genetic instructions to build the spike protein and stores the information in the double-stranded DNA. The vaccine has been developed from adenoviruses, a kind of virus that causes colds. Researchers added the gene for Covid spike protein to two adenoviruses, engineering them to invade affected cells. The Sputnik-V derives inspiration from the adenovirus used to create a vaccine for Ebola by Johnson & Johnson.

Cryptocurrency prices continue to be in the red on July 13. The global cryptocurrency market cap is $1.37 trillion, a 3.05 percent decrease over the last day, while the total crypto market volume over the last 24 hours is $62.75 billion, which makes an 18.86 percent increase.

The volume of all stable coins is now $47.54 billion – 75.76 percent of the total crypto market 24-hour volume. Bitcoin’s price is currently $34,150.06 and its dominance is currently 45.45 percent, an increase of 0.09 percent over the day.

This comes after trading volumes at major cryptocurrency exchanges fell by more than 40 percent in June, research showed on July 12, with a regulatory crackdown in China and lower volatility among the factors depressing activity.

Spot trading volumes fell 42.7 percent to $2.7 trillion, with derivative volumes down 40.7 percent to $3.2 trillion, London-based researcher CryptoCompare’s data showed.

“Headwinds continued as China persisted with its crackdown on bitcoin mining,” CryptoCompare said. “As a result of both lower prices and volatility, spot volumes decreased.”

E-way Bill Generation Shows Pick Up In Economic Recovery

E-way bill generation for goods transportation has gathered pace in July, indicating a graded pick-up in economic recovery, as the impact of the second Covid wave wanes. In the first 11 days of July, the average daily e-way bill generation stood at 19.24 lakh, 5.6% higher than the average for June and 49% higher than the May-level.

Between July 1 and 11, as many as 2.12 crore e-way bills were generated. Higher e-way bill generation will reflect in goods and service tax (GST) revenues.

Gross GST collections, after remaining above the Rs 1-lakh-crore mark for eight months in a row, came in at Rs 92,849 crore in June (May transactions), reflecting the blow to the economy from a localized lockdown.

Thanks to the reduction in Covid-19 cases and easing of the lockdowns, e-way bills generation by businesses rose to 5.5 crore in June, from 3.99 crore in May, indicating a smart recovery of trade and business. About 5.9 crore e-way bills were generated in April.

With the impact of the second Covid wave waning and vaccination drive making progress, some parts of the economy are expected to look up from July.

In recent months, the government’s GST revenue has been robust, thanks to steps taken to curb evasion, increased compliance and also a shift of business away from the informal sector. A nascent economic recovery that appears to have been quickly disrupted by the pandemic’s second surge, also helped.

Boris Johnson: All Covid-19 Restrictions To End In UK On July 19

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday (local time) confirmed that all virus restrictions in England will end on July 19.

Johnson told reporters that the move will eliminate mandates to wear masks in public places, social distancing rules, and work-from-home recommendations reported NHK World.

Johnson noted that vaccines help to prevent people with the coronavirus from developing serious symptoms.

He insisted that, while hospitalizations and deaths will continue to rise, they will likely be much lower than during the peak of the outbreak last autumn, reported NHK World.

He said, “we cannot simply revert instantly from Monday, July 19 to life as it was before COVID.”

Meanwhile, officials said the government recommends that people wear face coverings in crowded indoor areas. Some experts warned that eliminating restrictions when the virus is spreading will be risky, reported NHK World.

Britain has seen its daily case count top 30,000 in recent days, amid the spread of the Delta variant.

Johnson urged people to act with caution and personal responsibility, saying, “this pandemic is not over.”

FDA Adds New Warning To J&J Covid-19 Vaccine

US regulators on Monday added a new warning to Johnson & Johnson’s (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine about links to a rare and potentially dangerous neurological reaction but said it’s not entirely clear the shot caused the problem.

The Food and Drug Administration announced the new warning, flagging reports of Guillain-Barre syndrome, an immune system disorder that can causes muscle weakness and occasionally paralysis. Health officials described the side effect as a “small possible risk” for those getting the shot.\

The action comes after the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reviewed reports of about 100 people developing the syndrome after receiving the one-dose vaccine. Almost all of them required hospitalization and one person died, the FDA said

Guillain-Barre syndrome occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks some of its nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis that typically is temporary. An estimated 3,000 to 6,000 people develop the syndrome each year, according to the CDC.

The number of cases reported in connection with J&J’s vaccine represents a tiny fraction of the nearly 13 million Americans who have received the one-dose shot. Most cases were reported in men — many 50 years old and up — and usually about two weeks after vaccination.

J&J said in a statement it has been discussing the reports with the FDA and other health regulators around the world.

The CDC said it would ask its panel of outside vaccine experts to review the issue at an upcoming meeting.

The government said the vaccines most used in the US, made by Pfizer and Moderna, show no risk of the disorder after more than 320 million doses have been administered.

The new warning will be included in pamphlets given to people getting the J&J shot. They should seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms, which include tingling sensations, trouble walking and double vision, the FDA said.

Vaccines historically provide broad protection with little risk but come with occasional side effects just like other drugs and medical therapies. The three COVID-19 vaccines used in the US were each tested in tens of thousands of people, but even such huge studies can’t rule out extremely rare side effects.

The CDC and the FDA have been monitoring side effect reports submitted by physicians, drugmakers and patients to a federal vaccine safety database.

Guillain-Barre can be triggered by a number of infections, including flu, cytomegalovirus and Zika virus. But there have been rare cases in which people develop the disorder days or weeks after receiving certain vaccines.

J&J’s vaccine was highly anticipated because of its one-and-done formulation and easy-to-ship refrigeration. But early on, it was linked to another rare risk, of blood clots, and the company hasn’t been able to produce as much as expected because of problems at a Baltimore factory that helps make the shots.

Pakistan’s Private Schools Association Launches Documentary On Malala Yousafzai

Pakistan’s private schools’ association on Monday launched a documentary on Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai for her controversial views on Islam, marriage and her pursuit of the Western agenda.

Malala, who turned 24 on Monday, was the co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for her struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education. Having received the prize at the age of 17, Malala is the youngest Nobel laureate. She shared the prize with Kailash Satyarthi, a children’s rights activist from India.

Addressing a press conference at his office in Gulberg here the All-Pakistan Private Schools Federation president Kashif Mirza said: “Through this documentary film — I am not Malala – we will tell 20 million students in 200,000 private schools across the country about her controversial views on Islam, marriage, pursuing of Western agenda.”

“The idea behind this is we want to expose Malala among the youth as it does not get impressed by her so-called story of struggle for women rights,” Mirza said.

He said Malala had advocated “partnership” that is adultery in Islam.

“Marriage is a sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) and partnership is adultery,” he said.

‘I am not Malala’s Day’ is also observed on July 12 in private schools as lectures and seminars are held to expose her western agenda to students.

Mirza said Malala has categorically rejected the institution of marriage and suggested that ‘partnership’ is better than getting married.

“Malala has attacked the institution of marriage and family structure by advocating that people should live in sin…No one can justify Muslims living together without marriage as it is strongly condemned in Islam,” he said.

Similarly, Mirza said in her book “I am Malala”, the Nobel Peace winner book has highly controversial material in it which is contrary to the teachings of Islam, Quranic injunctions, ideology of Islam and Pakistan’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah and the Pakistan Army.

“This book is written at the behest of western forces that used Malala for their ulterior motives. Malala has declared Islam and Pak army as ‘militant’ in her controversial book. She also criticised Quranic verses about two women’s testimony to be equal to that of a man and also about the four witnesses in rape case,” he said.

Mirza said a group photo with writer Tasleema Nasreen and strong ties with an Indian for Nobel award are enough to explain Malala’s designs.

Mirza alleged her blog in BBC under the name “Gul Makai” was written by someone else as she could not even read or write by then.

“Malala’s father Ziauddin had admitted in a TV programme that her blog was written by BBC correspondent Abdul Hai Kakar and the book ‘I am Malala’ was written by Christina Lamb,” he said.

Collar Bomb Review: Jimmy Sheirgill And Asha Negi Racing Against Time Is Enthralling

Critic’s Rating: 3.5/5

Cast: Jimmy Sheirgill, Asha Negi, Sparsh Srivastav, Rajshri Deshpande, Naman Jain

STORY: The story takes place in a small town in Himachal Pradesh where a suicide bomber holds a school full of children hostage. The key to saving their lives lies in the past of the celebrated cop (who is also captive). Will he be able to catch the mastermind and save lives?

REVIEW: Collar Bomb follows Manoj Kumar Hesi (Jimmy Sheirgill), a decorated cop with a tumultuous history. Before a suicide bomber Ali (Sparsh Shrivastava) threatens to blow up a school where he has kidnapped students, Manoj Hesi is plunged into chaos and compelled to conduct a series of heinous crimes. The lovely hamlet around Manoj falls into lunacy as he races against time to complete this scavenger hunt from hell, confronted by an evil that seems to have no other objective than to strike terror. Over the course of the film, the mystery around the cop’s own past is also unraveled.

This crime drama, written by Nikhil Nair and directed by Dnyanesh Zoting, is packed with enough twists and turns to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. There’s a good combination of crime, drama, action, mystery, and emotions in this story. The plot revolves around a ticking bomb, creating a pressure cooker situation for both Manoj Kumar Hesi and the audience. The screenplay is fast-paced, yet it loses its grip at times. When compared to other films in the same genre like ‘A Wednesday’ and ‘Madaari,’ the tale has a lesser impact. The climax, on the other hand, will capture your attention and reveal everything that has been kept hidden.

The cinematography by Jitan Harmit Singh is fascinating with scenic locales of the hill station that are soothing in this otherwise serious crime drama. Nisarg Mehta and Gaurav Sharma’s dialogues are quite average and reminiscent of the 80s cinema. For example, “Wardi wale kuch nahi kar paayenge toh khadi walo ko toh maidaan mein utarna padega na (If people in uniform cannot perform their duties properly then politicians have to take charge in their hand).”

As SHO Manoj Hesi, a renowned supercop, Jimmy Sheirgill steals the show. But he is trapped in a script that leaves little room for vivid character development. Despite this, Hesi takes a centre stage along with the other police officials, especially ASI Sumitra Joshi (Asha Negi), who is a no-nonsense cop. Asha Negi who recently appeared in ‘Ludo’ and ‘Abhay 2’ opposite Kunal Khemu, is impressive. She is also seen doing some stunts as well (the scene where she enters into a dhaba, which is set on fire by some locals, is quite the entry) and even her local dialect is spot on. Sparsh Shrivastav as the suicide bomber Ali, Naman Jain as Akshay Hesi (Manoj’s son), Rajshri Deshpande and the rest of the ensemble cast have given decent performances in this intense crime-thriller.

“Life is a chain that is built from the decisions we make,” as Jimmy Sheirgill says in the end, perfectly summing up this 87-minute riveting drama. It will have you hooked to your seat the entire time.

The 1-hour-26-minute film is streaming on Disney+Hotstar.

Solar Storm Approaching Towards Earth Likely To Hit Today

A high-speed solar storm that is approaching the Earth at a speed of 1.6 million kilometres per hour, according to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), is expected to hit our planet’s magnetic field later today, affecting electricity supply and communication infrastructure around the world.

The solar flare, flowing from an equatorial hole in the sun’s atmosphere that was first detected on July 3, can travel at a maximum speed of 500 km/second, according to Although full-fledged geomagnetic (magnetic field associated with Earth) storms are unlikely, lesser geomagnetic unrest could spark high-latitude auroras.

The satellites in the Earth’s upper atmosphere are also expected to get impacted by the incoming flares. This will directly impact GPS navigation, mobile phone signal and satellite TV. Power grids can also be hit by the solar flares.

According to the latest prediction of the Space Weather Prediction Centre of the United States, the storm can also lead to a blackout of high-frequency radio communication for nearly an hour in a vast area. The Centre has marked the solar flares at X1 level, ‘X’ denoting the classification and the numerical suffix denoting the strength of the flare.

Solar flares are massive explosions on the surface of the sun that release energy, light and high-speed particles into space. According to Nasa, the biggest flares are known as “X-class flares” based on a classification system that categorises solar flares as per their strength. The smallest ones fall under A-class, followed by B, C, M and X. The solar flare that is likely to hit Earth’s magnetic field today is an X-class flare.

Favorable Monsoon Likely To Boost Farm Output And Maintain Crop Costs In Check

Inflation pressures build up in India as wholesale inflation (WPI) has been rising for five months. The impact can be seen on surging commodity prices for a few months now. While RBI is expected to look through supply-driven inflation surge along with supply-side measures taken by the government, Barclays in its recent monsoon report has noted that monsoon can also help balance this impounding pressure on prices for the medium term. “A favorable monsoon that boosts farm output could help to keep price pressures in check,” Barclays stated.

However, many areas are witnessing a monsoon dry spell as the rainfall remains subdued. According to the report, the rainfall received for the last 20 days has been below normal. Monsoon rains are expected to pick up during the second week of July and remain in a normal range for the rest of the month, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted. As of now, the overall rainfall is 8 per cent below the normal range.

As a result of the dry spell, the impact can be seen of sowing of kharif crops. “The progress of monsoon during July-August is critical, as it has a significant bearing on sowing and crop yields for the year,” Barclays added. But with the monsoon being delayed, many farmers are delaying sowing of the kharif (summer) crop this season. The state governments have also urged the farmers to do so, the report said.

Pushpendra Singh, President- Kisan Shakti Sangh also told FE online that delay in monsoon has impacted the sowing of crops this year. The area sown through as of now is at 50 crore hectares whereas more than 56 crore hectares have been used for sowing last year by this time. While the farmers have been hopeful on monsoon recovery, by mid-July, there has not been much rainfall in northern parts of the country. For areas where rain remains scarce, Singh said farmers will have to use groundwater as a resource which will further stress their input cost and profitability. To be sure, the monsoon is also critical for water reservoir storage levels.

Barclays noted as of July 7, storage in 130 key reservoirs stood at 31 per cent of total capacity. “This amounts to 93% of the available capacity in the year-earlier period and 126% of the 10-year average for this point in the season.” Meanwhile, sowing trends for cotton, coarse cereals and oilseeds remain weak with a decline of 10 per cent, 15 per cent and 10 per cent year-on-year decline in sowing, respectively.

South Korea’s Capital Seoul Witness Distancing Curbs As Coronavirus Spreads

From Monday, South Korea will impose the highest level of social distancing restrictions (level 4) in its capital Seoul and other neighbouring areas with a view to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19). South Korea, which is currently witnessing the fourth wave of the pandemic, has so far recorded 1,69,146 cases and 2,044 deaths due to the viral disease.

According to the new regulations, private social gatherings of three or more people will be prohibited after 6pm, churches and night clubs will be closed, and visitors will not be allowed at hospitals and nursing homes. All types of rallies have been banned and only family members can attend funerals and marriages.

On Sunday, 1,100 people tested positive for Covid-19, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). This is the sixth consecutive day that the daily infections were above the 1,000 mark. However, the fourth wave of the pandemic has brought fewer serious cases and deaths than the earlier ones and many senior citizens along with vulnerable people have been vaccinated, news agency Reuters reported.

On the other hand, health authorities and experts have warned the situation might worsen as a rising number of young patients have not been vaccinated yet and the threat of the highly infectious Delta variant is still looming.

A report by the Washington Post on July 9 said that during the earlier period of the pandemic, South Korea had received global recognition for controlling the viral disease by carrying out robust testing and contract tracing and while also avoiding a strict countrywide lockdown.

The report added that authorities might have given an incorrect signal to the public with the “premature lifting” of Covid-related restrictions. Choi Jae-wook, a medical professor at the Korea University in Seoul, told the Washington Post that as the delta variant of Covid-19 is spreading globally, authorities should have tightened and not eased the restrictions.

The fourth level of social distancing restrictions starting Monday has also put the country’s industrial sector into an ‘emergency mode’. Industries are now focusing on reducing cases among their employees by expanding the spectrum of telework, which in simple terms means working from home, and have also upgraded their in-house quarantine guidelines, according to news agency ANI. Samsung has asked its employees to refrain from visiting karaoke, nightclubs and bars and get tested for Covid-19 before returning to work if they visited such places. LG Electronics, meanwhile, is imposing a total ban on business trips, training and external meetings.

Nepal’s Supreme Court Orders To Appoint Sher Bahadur Deuba As PM

Nepal’s Supreme Court on Monday reinstated the dissolved House of Representatives for a second time in nearly five months, delivering a major blow to Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli who is currently heading a minority government after losing a trust vote in the House.

A five-member Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court on Monday also ordered the appointment of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba as prime minister within two days.

The bench led by Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana had concluded hearings in the case last week. The bench comprised four other senior most justices — Dipak Kumar Karki, Mira Khadka, Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada and Dr Ananda Mohan Bhattarai — at the apex court.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari had dissolved the 275-member lower house for the second time in five months on May 22 at the recommendation of Prime Minister Oli and announced snap elections on November 12 and November 19.

Last week, the Election Commission had announced the schedule for mid-term elections despite the uncertainty over polls.

As many as 30 petitions, including one by the opposition alliance led by the Nepali Congress, were filed against the dissolution of the House by the President.

Nepal plunged into a political crisis on December 20 last year after President Bhandari dissolved the House and announced fresh elections on April 30 and May 10 at the recommendation of Prime Minister Oli, amidst a tussle for power within the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP).

On February 23, the apex court reinstated the dissolved House of Representatives, in a setback to embattled Prime Minister Oli who was preparing for snap polls.

Georgia People Protests Over The Journalist’s Death

Several thousand people protested in front of the Georgian parliament on Sunday evening, demanding that the ex-Soviet nation’s prime minister resign over the death of a journalist who was attacked and beaten by anti-LGBT protesters.

Cameraman Alexander Lashkarava was found dead in his home by his mother earlier Sunday, according to the TV Pirveli channel he worked for. Lashkarava was one of several dozen journalists attacked last Monday by opponents of an LGBT march that had been scheduled to take place that day in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.

Organizers of the Tbilisi March For Dignity cancelled the event, saying authorities had not provided adequate security guarantees. Opponents of the march blocked off the capital’s main avenue, denounced journalists covering the protest as pro-LGBT propagandists and threw sticks and bottles at them.

Lashkarava, according to his colleague Miranda Baghaturia, was beaten by a mob of 20 people. Local TV channels later showed him with bruises on his face and blood on the floor around him. Media reports say he sustained multiple injuries and had to undergo surgery but was discharged from a hospital on Thursday.

The cause of his death was not immediately clear. Police launched an investigation into Lashkarava’s death, which Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and President Salome Zurabishvili both described as “a tragedy.”

Animosity against sexual minorities is strong in the conservative Black Sea nation of Georgia.

The Tbilisi Pride group said Monday that opponents of the planned march were supported by the government and by the Georgian Orthodox Church. The Open Caucasus Media group published a photo of a man it said was a local TV journalist being pulled away from the scene in a headlock by an Orthodox priest.

Zurabishvili condemned the violence, but Garibashvili alleged the march was organized by “radical opposition” forces that he claimed were led by exiled former President Mikheil Saakashvili.

A large crowd of protesters that gathered in Tbilisi on Sunday demanded that authorities punish those responsible for the attack on journalists and urged Garibashvili to step down. Some protesters blamed the prime minister for enabling the violence by publicly denouncing the LGBT march.

Pfizer, US Officials To Meet On Covid-19 Vaccine Booster Shots

Pfizer says it plans to meet with top US health officials Monday to discuss the drugmaker’s request for federal authorization of the third dose of its COVID-19 vaccine as President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser acknowledged that “it is entirely conceivable, maybe likely” that booster shots will be needed. The company said it was scheduled to have the meeting with the Food and Drug Administration and other officials Monday, days after Pfizer asserted that booster shots would be needed within 12 months.

Pfizer’s Dr. Mikael Dolsten told The Associated Press last week that early data from the company’s booster study suggests people’s antibody levels jump five- to 10-fold after a third dose, compared to their second dose months earlier — evidence it believes supports the need for a booster.

On Sunday, Dr. Anthony Fauci didn’t rule out the possibility but said it was too soon for the government to recommend another shot. He said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the FDA did the right thing last week by pushing back against Pfizer’s assertion with their statement that they did not view booster shots as necessary “at this time.”

Fauci said clinical studies and laboratory data have yet to fully bear out the need for a booster to the current two-shot Pfizer and Moderna vaccines or the one-shot Johnson & Johnson regimen. “Right now, given the data and the information we have, we do not need to give people a third shot,” he said. “That doesn’t mean we stop there. … There are studies being done now ongoing as we speak about looking at the feasibility about if and when we should be boosting people.”

He said it was quite possible in the coming months “as data evolves” that the government may urge a booster based on such factors as age and underlying medical conditions. “Certainly it is entirely conceivable, maybe likely at some time, we will need a boost,” Fauci said.

Monday’s planned meeting between Pfizer and US health officials was first reported by The Washington Post. Currently only about 48% of the US population is fully vaccinated. Some parts of the country have far lower immunisation rates, and in those places the delta variant is surging. Last week, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the CDC director, said that’s leading to “two truths” — highly immunised swaths of America are getting back to normal while hospitalizations are rising in other places.

Fauci said it was inexplicable that some Americans are so resistant to getting a vaccine when scientific data show how effective it is in staving off COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations, and he was dismayed by efforts to block making vaccinations more accessible, such as Biden’s suggestion of door-to-door outreach.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson, R-Ark., agreed Sunday that there is a vaccine resistance in Southern and rural states like his because “you have that more conservative approach, skepticism about government.”

Describing his efforts to boost vaccinations in his state, which is seeing rising infections, Hutchinson said “no one wants an agent knocking on a door,” but “we do want those that do not have access otherwise to make sure they know about it.”

The grassroots component of the federal vaccination campaign has been in operation since April, when supplies of shots began outpacing demand. It was outlined and funded by Congress in the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill passed in March and overwhelmingly is carried out by local officials and private-sector workers and volunteers.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., blasted opposition to vaccination efforts from some GOP lawmakers as “absolute insanity.” He said House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy of California and others in the party need to speak out against “these absolute clown politicians playing on your vaccine fears for their own selfish gain.”

Ajay Devgn’s ‘Bhuj The Pride of India’ Trailer Out

Ajay Devgn unveiled the trailer of his upcoming film, Bhuj: The Pride of India, on Monday. Sharing the video on Instagram, he wrote, “When bravery becomes your armour, every step leads you to victory! Experience the untold story of the greatest battle ever fought, #BhujThePrideOfIndia.”

Bhuj: The Pride of India, directed by Abhishek Dudhaiya, is set in the backdrop of the India-Pakistan War of 1971. The film, which stars Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Nora Fatehi and Sharad Kelkar, is inspired by the journey of Indian Air Force Squadron leader Vijay Karnik and how he, along with 300 women from a local village, rebuilt an entire IAF airbase.

The trailer begins with an airstrike on the Bhuj airport. As India figures out how to stop the Pakistan army, we see glimpses of how the characters of Ajay, Sanjay, Sonakshi, Nora and Sharad are filled with the fire of patriotism. There are also plenty of action sequences, from missile launches to attacks on warships.

At the end, Ajay is seen rising from the wreckage and declaring, “Mere marne ka maatam mat karna, maine khud yeh shahdat chuni hai. Main jeeta hoon marne ke liye, mera naam hai sipahi (Don’t mourn my death, I have chosen martyrdom myself. I live to die, I am a soldier).”

Bhuj: The Pride of India is set for a direct-to-digital release on Disney+ Hotstar on August 13, just two days before Independence Day.

Ajay directed an action sequence in Bhuj: The Pride of India due to stunt coordinator Peter Hein’s unavailability last March. “It is true that Ajay designed the action sequence for the movie. The sequences come at a crucial juncture in the narrative. In the first set-piece, Ajay is seen attempting hand-to-hand combat as he fights the spies sent by the Pakistani army. The other segment, an outdoor shoot, has Sanjay Dutt and Sharad Kelkar take on the baddies,” Mid-Day quoted the film’s spokesperson as saying.

Akshay Kumar’s ‘Bell Bottom’ To Get A New Release Date?

Makers of Akshay Kumar’s ‘Bell Bottom’ may be forced to push the release of the film once again. This after the fact that the lockdown restrictions have been rolled back in a few states, with no sign of theatres opening up by the end of this month, as film industry experts were hoping for. On June 15, producer Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment had announced the release date of the film to be July 27 and it was to be the first big film to release in the cinemas since lockdown 2.0 came into effect.
There is also buzz in the trade circles that the film may not even release in theatres in August. When asked about the release being pushed to mid-August, Raj Bansal, a leading distributor and multiplex owner from Rajasthan said, “Looking at the current situation I don’t think cinemas will fully open by July 27 so there is every chance ‘Bell Bottom’ may release on August 13.”

While producer Vashu Bhagnani was not available for comment, a source close to the unit said, “There is no decision taken on ‘Bell Bottom’ yet as theatres are yet to open in the country.” The makers will also now make sure the film releases in the theatre at an appropriate time. The OTT release date will be affected accordingly, as well.

‘Bell Bottom’ project has managed to lead the charge from the beginning. Even last year, it hit the headlines for being the first Hindi film to be shot and completed during the pandemic with exemplary on-set COVID management.

‘Bell Bottom’ is a spy thriller directed by Ranjit Tewari and stars Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Lara Dutta and Vani Kapoor.

Priyanka Chopra Looks Drop-Dead Gorgeous In White Strappy Dress

Priyanka Chopra recently made a visit to her Indian restaurant Sona in New York; she shared a series of pictures on Instagram.

For her visit, Priyanka kept her look classy and sensuous at the same time. She opted for a strappy white midi dress that made her look stunning. The body-hugging dress accentuated her figure quite well. It featured a thigh-high slit and was backless, which further elevated the look. One can also notice a pleat-like detailing on the dress.

“Timeless India all within the heart of New York City. So much love for @sonanewyork,” she captioned the pictures.

Keeping the look balanced, Priyanka accessorized her outfit with golden hoops, a pair of bangles, a sleek chain, and some rings.

She completed the look with golden stilettos and a dark lip shade. Her hair was tied in a high bun with locks.

During her previous visit to the restaurant in June, Priyanka rocked a striped blue shirt and a pair of high-waist neon green trousers. And it seems she wore the same pair of golden bangles and left her hair open.

What do you think of her latest look?

Skincare Tips To Avoid Signs Of Ageing

Ageing is a process that begins right from birth and there is nothing anyone can do to delay or stop it. However, as the urge to look younger has caught up amongst the modern population, more and more options and opportunities to look and appear younger have become available. Dr Pramod Kumar, Consultant Dermatologist, KMC Hospital, Mangalore, says, “Changes in the skin, especially on the face, show up as signs of ageing in the third decade onwards. Prominent changes are wrinkles and creases.”

Skincare Tips To Avoid Signs Of Ageing

Protection From The Sun

Sunrays can damage collagen and elastin in the skin; these fibres keep the skin supple and taut. Damage to this tissue leads to sagging, laxity and development of wrinkles and creases. Dr Kumar says, “Regular use of a good suitable sunscreen with SPF of 20 and above helps in delaying this process of ageing. Remember, sunscreens have to be used even on cloudy days, as UV rays pass through clouds too. Also remember that 30-40 minutes of sun on your skin is advisable so as not to end up with Vitamin D deficiency.”

Skin Hydration

Well-hydrated skin is a sign of healthy skin. Moisturizing the skin from within and without definitely works on the wrinkles, especially on the face and limb extremities. Dr Kumar suggests, “Drink lots of water as per body’s requirement and depending on the climate and geographical area. On an average, about two liters per day is a good quantity. The habit of staying adequately hydrated keeps the rest of the physiology and metabolism in top condition and reflects well on the skin. Use of a proper moisturizer on the skin helps maintain the water content in the skin.”
Additionally, ask your dermatologist to recommend an appropriate face wash; do not use harsh cleansers and scrubs that damage your skin. Dermatologists recommend retinol-based lotions and creams for regular use as they have a role in keeping collagen fibres functioning well.

Proper Nutrition

‘You are what you eat’ is an often repeated mantra by wellness coaches, nutrition experts and doctors. Yes, your skin does reveal your nutritional intake in various ways, and signs of ageing is one of them. Dr Kumar advises, “Eat a good quantity of vegetables, fruit and nuts in your daily meals. Stick to what is available seasonally in your market and region. Vegetables provide a lot of fresh vitamins and minerals that are good for your skin. Vegetables can be consumed raw in salads as cooking destroys the goodness in them, and fresh fruit is better eaten than consumed as juice or extract. Do not overeat something due to its said nutritional facts, eat in moderation, mix and match well.”

Dr Kumar recommends the following for healthy skin:

• Decrease consumption of sugars, refined flour and dairy products
• Exercise and stay fit; a healthy mind and body will keep your skin looking young and healthy
• Give up smoking and limit your alcohol consumption; smoking is known to damage the elastin and collagen fibres in the skin
• Stress ages you faster; work up a schedule to relieve yourself of any stress, and remember that frowning, display of anger or frustration worsen wrinkles and fine lines on your face
• Finally, consult your dermatologist before signs of ageing appear; delaying their arrival is better than treating them later

Branson vs Bezos: Two Billionaires Compete To Ride Their Own Rockets Into Space

Two billionaires are putting everything on the line this month to ride their own rockets into space. It’s intended to be a flashy confidence boost for customers seeking their own short joyrides. The lucrative, high-stakes chase for space tourists will unfold on the fringes of space — 88 kilometers to 106 kilometers up, pitting Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson against the world’s richest man, Blue Origin’s Jeff Bezos.

Branson is due to take off Sunday from New Mexico, launching with two pilots and three other employees aboard a rocket plane carried aloft by a double-fuselage aircraft. Bezos departs nine days later from West Texas, blasting off in a fully automated capsule with three guests: his brother, an 82-year-old female aviation pioneer who’s waited six decades for a shot at space and the winner of a $28 million charity auction.

Branson’s flight will be longer, but Bezos’ will be higher. Branson’s craft has more windows, but Bezos’ windows are bigger. Branson’s piloted plane has already flown to space three times. Bezos’ has five times as many test flights, though none with people on board. Either way, they’re shooting for sky-high bragging rights as the first person to fly his own rocket to space and experience three to four minutes of weightlessness.

Branson, who turns 71 in another week, considers it “very important” to try it out before allowing space tourists on board. He insists he’s not apprehensive; this is the thrill-seeking adventurer who’s kite-surfed across the English Channel and attempted to circle the world in a hot air balloon.

“As a child, I wanted to go to space. When that did not look likely for my generation, I registered the name Virgin Galactic with the notion of creating a company that could make it happen,” Branson wrote in a blog this week. Seventeen years after founding Virgin Galactic, he’s on the cusp of experiencing space for himself.

“It’s amazing where an idea can lead you, no matter how far-fetched it may seem at first.” Bezos, 57, who stepped down Monday as Amazon’s CEO, announced in early June that he’d be on his New Shepard rocket’s first passenger flight, choosing the 52nd anniversary of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s moon landing. He too had childhood dreams of traveling to space, Bezos said via Instagram. “On July 20th, I will take that journey with my brother. The greatest adventure, with my best friend.”

Branson was supposed to fly later this year on the second of three more test flights planned by Virgin Galactic before flying ticket holders next year. But late last week, he leapfrogged ahead. He insists he’s not trying to beat Bezos and that it’s not a race. Yet his announcement came just hours after Bezos revealed he’d be joined in space by Wally Funk, one of the last surviving members of the so-called Mercury 13. The 13 female pilots never made it to space despite passing the same tests in the early 1960s as NASA’s original, all-male Mercury 7 astronauts.

Bezos hasn’t commented publicly on Branson’s upcoming flight. But some at Blue Origin already are nitpicking the fact that their capsule surpasses the designated Karman line of space 100 kilometers up, while Virgin Galactic’s peak altitude is 88 kilometers.

International aeronautic and astronautic federations in Europe recognize the Karman line as the official boundary between the upper atmosphere and space, while NASA, the Air Force, the Federal Aviation Administration and some astrophysicists accept a minimum altitude of 80 kilometers.

Blue Origin’s flights last 10 minutes by the time the capsule parachutes onto the desert floor. Virgin Galactic’s last around 14 to 17 minutes from the time the space plane drops from the mothership and fires its rocket motor for a steep climb until it glides to a runway landing.

SpaceX’s Elon Musk doesn’t do quick up-and-down hops to the edge of space. His capsules go all the way to orbit, and he’s shooting for Mars. “There is a big difference between reaching space and reaching orbit,” Musk said last week on Twitter. Musk already has carried 10 astronauts to the International Space Station for NASA, and his company’s first private spaceflight is coming up in September for another billionaire who’s purchased a three-day, globe-circling ride. Regardless of how high they fly, Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin already are referring to their prospective clients as “astronauts.”

More than 600 have reserved seats with Virgin Galactic at $250,000. Blue Origin expects to announce prices and open ticket sales once Bezos flies. Phil McAlister, NASA’s commercial spaceflight director, considers it a space renaissance, especially as the space station gets set to welcome a string of paying visitors, beginning with a Russian actress and movie producer in October, a pair of Japanese in December and a SpaceX-delivered crew of businessmen in January. “The way I see it is the more, the better, right?” McAlister said. “More, better.”

This is precisely the future NASA wanted once the shuttles retired and private companies took over space station ferry flights. Atlantis blasted off on the last shuttle flight 10 years ago Thursday. NASA’s final shuttle commander, Chris Ferguson, who now works for Boeing on its Starliner crew capsule, is impressed that Branson and Bezos are launching ahead of customers. “That’s one surefire way to show confidence in your product is to get on it,” Ferguson said at Thursday’s 10th anniversary shuttle celebrations. “I’m sure that this was not a decision made lightly. I wish them both well. I think it’s great.”

Harley-Davidson LiveWire One Motorcycle Launches At Much Lower Price

Harley-Davidson has announced the launch of its first model under the newly announced all-electric brand – LiveWire. The new motorcycle under the refreshed badging is called LiveWire ONE.

Surprisingly, the company has listed the motorcycle at a much lower price tag than the original $29,799 ( ₹22.23 lakh) Harley-Davidson LiveWire launched two years back. The new motorcycle has been priced at just $21,999 ( ₹16.41 lakh) in the US market. The original LiveWire electric bike gained widespread acclaim for its technology, performance and modern exterior design, but was let down by its sky-high price.

The new LiveWire ONE motorcycle is identical to the original electric bike in terms of styling and specs but benefits from a longer colour options list. It gets a 78 kW (105 hp) electric motor with an electronically limited top speed of 110 mph (177 km/h). It is rated to achieve an acceleration timing of 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.0-3.1 seconds.

The city range on the new LiveWire ONE has been listed at 146 miles (235 km). For the record, it is identical to the original LiveWire motorcycle as it shares the same technology. While the company is yet to share the highway range specs, the bike is expected to do a full charge range of 80 miles (129 km) at 70 mph (112 km/h) similar to the previous LiveWire model which featured a 15.5 kWh battery pack.

The bike gets DC fast charging that juices up the battery from 0-100% in 60 minutes or 0-80% in 45 minutes. Under more realistic conditions, 20-80% charge time is achieved in close to 30 minutes.

The company is aiming at a larger set of younger customers with a lower price tag. “As part of The Hardwire Strategy, we made a commitment that Harley-Davidson would lead in electric. Today’s LiveWire ONE builds on the DNA of Harley-Davidson but with the electric focus and ambition of the new LiveWire brand,” said H-D’s CEO Jochen Zeitz.

Economy Showing Signs Of Revival Due To Rapid Vaccination: Finance Ministry

The Finance Ministry on Friday said the economy has started showing signs of revival from the impact of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic on the back of targeted fiscal relief, monetary policy and a rapid vaccination drive.

“The broad-based economic relief package, extended to mitigate the second wave, amounted to Rs 6.29 lakh crore. RBI continues with its efforts to calm the nerves of the market and revive sectors with both backward and forward linkages and multiplier effects on growth,” the ministry said in its monthly economic review.

To stimulate the economy and ease the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman last month announced eight economic measures amounting to Rs 6.29 lakh crore to provide relief to individuals as well as businesses in the country.

Apart from eight relief measures announced in health and other worst affected sectors, Sitharaman announced a stimulus package for the tourism industry, which included five lakh tourist visas to be issued free of charge, once the government resumes issuance. The total financial implication of the scheme will be Rs 100 crore.

Resilient tax collections of the central government in the first two months of FY 2020-21 and sustained momentum in capital expenditure, particularly in the road and rail sector, the report said, augurs well for continued economic recovery driven by capital expenditures.

The report further added that the recently announced economic relief package was “expected to further oil the wheels of the Capex cycle via implementation of the PLI scheme and streamlining of processes for PPP Projects and Asset Monetisation”.

Consumption sentiment is expected to pick up with further enhancement of employment support under Aatmanirbhar Bharat Rozgar Yojana (ANBRY), targeted support to the urban poor through the credit guarantee scheme for on-lending by micro-finance institutions and wider Bharat-Net digitisation coverage, the economic review for June said.

Free food-grain and enhanced fertiliser subsidies under the package along with continued MGNREGA implementation, on the other hand, would serve as a cushion for rural demand in the coming quarters, it said.

“Maintaining a rapid pace on vaccination and quickly bridging health care infrastructure gaps across both urban and rural areas would emerge as the most sustainable stimulus for durable recovery of the Indian economy,” the report added.

Going forward, it said, further expansion of vaccination and strict adherence to COVID-appropriate behaviour will be a critical safeguard against the emergence of a possible third wave.

On high food prices, the report said, healthy monsoon coverage, gradually rising Kharif sowing and unlocking of states is expected to ease food, and thereby headline inflation.

However, it said, risks due to global demand-led recovery in commodity prices and input cost pressures remain.

About global economic growth, it said this has continued its upward trajectory in June 2021.

Falling COVID-19 infections and accelerating vaccinations consolidated US recovery and renewed growth prospects in the Euro Area, it said, adding global trade remained buoyant with an uptick in global commercial flight and port activity, which portends well for Indian exports.

However, it said, the resurgence of delta variant infections, firming inflationary pressures, unequal access to vaccination and burgeoning debt levels continue to lend substantial uncertainty to the global economic outlook.

Sensex Drops Over 300 Points In Early Trade; Nifty Tests 15,650

Equity benchmark Sensex tumbled over 300 points in early trade on Friday, tracking losses in index majors Reliance Industries, HDFC twins and ICICI Bank amid a weak trend in global markets.

After dropping 340 points in the opening session, the 30-share BSE index was trading 282.08 points or 0.054 per cent lower at 52,286.86 in initial deals, while the broader NSE Nifty dropped 77.75 points or 0.49 per cent to 15,650.15.

Axis Bank was the top loser in the Sensex pack, shedding over 1 per cent, followed by IndusInd Bank, TCS, HDFC, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries and Bajaj Auto.

On the other hand, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finserv, Dr Reddy’s, Sun Pharma and Titan were among the gainers.

In the previous session, Sensex ended 485.82 points or 0.92 per cent lower at 52,568.94, while Nifty dropped 151.75 points or 0.96 per cent to 15,727.90.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market as they offloaded shares worth Rs 554.92 crore on Thursday, as per provisional exchange data.

Domestic equities continue to look soft due to weak global cues as of now, said Binod Modi Head-Strategy at Reliance Securities. “While visible improvement in business momentum with ease of business curbs by states started offering comfort, the recent uptick in daily caseload and increasing positive rate could be a near term risk as we saw Japan imposed fresh restrictions in Tokyo yesterday,” he stated.

US stocks retreated in overnight trade as the weak tone across global equities on worries about a possible slowdown in recovery due to persistent supply bottlenecks and the spread of the delta variant weighed on sentiments.

Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai, Seoul and Tokyo were trading in the red in mid-session deals, while Hong Kong was positive.
Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude declined 0.04 per cent to USD 74.09 per barrel.

UNICEF To Supply 220 Million Doses Of The Johnson & Johnson To African Union

The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef) has announced the signing of an agreement with Janssen Pharmaceutica NV to supply 220 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) single-dose vaccine against Covid-19 for all 55 member states of the African Union (AU) by the end of 2022.

Some 35 million doses are to be delivered by the end of 2021, Xinhua news agency quoted Unicef as saying in a statement on Thursday.

The agreement between Unicef and Janssen will help implement the Advance Purchase Commitment signed between the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) and Janssen in March 2021.

That agreement secured an option to order another 180 million doses, bringing the maximum access up to a total of 400 million doses by the end of 2022, said the UN agency.

The AU established AVAT in November 2020 to deliver Covid-19 vaccines to the African continent, with a goal of vaccinating 60 per cent of its population.

Unicef will procure and deliver Covid-19 vaccines on behalf of the AVAT initiative.

Other partners include the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Bank.

“African countries must have affordable and equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines as soon as possible. Vaccine access has been unequal and unfair, with less than 1 per cent of the population of the African continent currently vaccinated against Covid-19. This cannot continue,” said Unicef Executive Director Henrietta Fore.

“Vaccinating the world against Covid-19, as the virus continues to spread and mutate, is one of the largest and most complex collective health undertakings the world has ever seen, and we need all hands on deck,” said Fore.

PM Boris Johnson Announces Withdrawal Of UK Troops From Afghanistan

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Thursday the withdrawal of all British troops from Afghanistan, signalling the end of Britain’s military mission in a two-decade-long conflict.

“All British troops assigned to NATO’s mission in Afghanistan are now returning home,” Johnson told the House of Commons, the lower house of the British parliament.

The Prime Minister would not disclose the exact timetable of the departure for security reasons, but added that most of the 750 remaining British troops had already left, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Over the last two decades, 150,000 members of Britain’s armed forces served in Afghanistan, 457 of whom died, according to Johnson.

Britain’s move follows the announcement by US President Joe Biden in April that all US troops would leave Afghanistan before September 11, the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that drew the United States into its longest war.

Johnson said that Britain will use “every diplomatic and humanitarian lever” to support Afghanistan’s development and stability, including over 100 million pounds (about $138 million) of development assistance this year, and 58 million pounds for the Afghan national security and defense forces.

Japan Under The Fourth Covid-19 State Of Emergency

The Japanese government has decided to place capital Tokyo under the fourth Covid-19 state of emergency, covering the entire duration of the upcoming Olympics, in an effort to curb a recent surge in infections.

The government announced on Thursday that the emergency will be effective from July 12 to August 22, which may cause the Summer Olympic Games to be held without spectators at venues in the capital, Xinhua news agency reported.

Addressing a news conference here, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said that the occupancy rate of hospital beds and the number of patients in serious condition remain low due to the vaccine rollout, but infection cases in Tokyo were rising due to the spread of the Delta variant.

“We must avoid another outbreak starting in Tokyo. With that in mind, we decided to take preemptive measures, and declare a state of emergency for Tokyo once again,” Suga was quoted as saying by the public broadcaster, NHK.

With two weeks until the Olympic Games, Suga pledged safety above all.

“Holding a safe and secure Games amid the coronavirus pandemic is a good opportunity to show our global unity to overcome the current difficulties together,” he said.

Cannes Documentary On Cinema Evolution Cites Five Indian films

Five Indian films, all made in Mumbai but disparate in spirit and substance, feature in Belfast-born, Edinburgh-based filmmaker and critic Mark Cousins’ stimulating 160-minute documentary, ‘The Story of Film: A New Generation’.

Made during the pandemic and studded with memorable movie moments, the documentary had its world premiere on the opening day of the 74th Cannes Film Festival as if to tell the world that cinema is, and will always be, alive, no matter what adversity it faces.

‘The Story of Film: A New Generation’, a part of the Cannes Classics section, opens with a shot of the new cinematheque in Madrid, a symbol of hope and renewal for diehard lovers of a medium that is nothing if not dynamic.

‘A New Generation’, a follow-up to Cousins’ 15-hour magnum opus ‘The Story of Film: An Odyssey’ (2011), tracks the creative innovations, technological advancements, and new ways of seeing in an image-intensive, attention-deficient digital age.

Besides covering the last decade of American and European cinema, it focuses extensively on Asian and Arab films. It also touches upon the pandemic, too, and ruminates on its repercussions: lockdowns, face masks, and social distancing.

The riveting, thought-provoking overview of ‘the new millennium of movies’ cites Anurag Kashyap’s five-hour ‘Gangs of Wasseypur‘, Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘PK‘, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Goliyon ki Rasleela Ram-Leela‘, Anand Gandhi’s ‘Ship of Theseus’ and Anand Patwardhan’s brilliant documentary ‘Reason’ among the most important films of the current era.

‘A New Generation’ is written, photographed, and narrated by Cousins. It covers a dizzying array of films and probes the evolution of the key movie genres, the extensions of film language, the centrality of faces in cinema, the explosion of streaming platforms and communication devices, and the advent of performance capture and de-aging tools.

Beginning with ‘Joker’ and ‘Frozen’, it encompasses a diverse range of films – from ‘Cemetery of Splendour’, ‘Parasite’ and ‘Shoplifters’ to ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Midsommar’, and from ‘Norte, the End of History’, ‘Holy Motors’ and ‘An Elephant Sitting Still to Hustlers’, ‘Gravity’ and ‘Baby Driver’- to capture the methods and directions of 21st-century cinema.

Cousins sees ‘Gangs of Wasseypur‘ as “one of the most complex” gangster films in the 80 years since the birth of the genre. A “most elaborately choreographed song” from ‘Ram-Leela’ featuring Ranveer Singh figures in the film.

The documentarian, whose credits include ‘Women Make Film’ (2018) and ‘The Eyes of Orson Welles’, also notes “the colours… and musical energy” of another Bollywood number, this one from ‘PK’, with Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt.

The filmmaker describes a “tonal shift” in PK as “one of the biggest… in contemporary cinema”. He regards ‘Reason’ as one of the most significant documentary films of our times and identifies a “moment” in Patwardhan’s film as “one of the bravest… in recent cinema”.

‘Ship of Theseus’, with its theme of ailment, healing, and renewal, is held up as a cinematic exemplar of the transitions that mankind is witnessing today as it sits on the cusp of a process that could change it beyond recognition.

Cousins makes a special mention of films that point a finger at our inhumanity and our refusal to learn the lessons of history.

Cousins has another film in Cannes Classics this year – ‘The Storms of Jeremy Thomas’, a documentary on the prolific British producer who has over the past five decades collaborated with a few of the world’s greatest filmmakers, notably Bernardo Bertolucci, Nagisa Oshima, Wim Wenders, Lars von Trier, and David Cronenberg.

Xiaomi Plans To Launch Mi And Redmi Laptops In India Soon

Xiaomi is expected to launch new laptops under its Mi and Redmi brands in India. Xiaomi already offers laptops under the Mi brand, and it could soon debut Redmi laptops in India as well. The launch is expected to take place as early as this month. Xiaomi entered the laptop market in India last year with the Mi Notebook. It currently has four Mi laptops including the Mi Notebook 14, Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition, Mi Notebook 14 IC, and Mi Notebook 14 e-Learning Edition.

There aren’t any details on which Xiaomi laptops exactly will make its way to India. But according to tipster Ishan Agarwal, there are new Mi laptops planned for India. Xiaomi also has a Redmi laptop launch planned for this month, the tipster added. The company is yet to announce the launch of any laptop in India. Xiaomi did put out a tweet asking users which combination they would prefer for their next work or personal laptop. The options were a 15.6-inch non-metallic 2kg laptop, a 14-inch metallic 1.5kg laptop, anad a 13.3-inch metallic 1.4kg laptop. This probably hints on a new Mi laptop coming soon.

Xiaomi could be bringing its recently launched laptops to India. It launched the Mi Notebook Pro X 15 in China late last month. The laptop starts at CNY 7,999 ( ₹92,100 approx), and it comes with a 15.6-inch Samsung E4 OLED display. The Mi Notebook Pro X 15 runs up to an 11th-generation Intel Core i7 processor paired with up to 1TB of storage. Under its Redmi brand, Xiaomi launched the RedmiBook Pro 14 and RedmiBook Pro 15 laptops back in February this year. These laptops are powered by 11th-generation Intel processors. It launched the AMD Ryzen 5000 series variants of the RedmiBook Pro 14 and RedmiBook Pro 15 in May this year.

Cryptocurrency Prices Today: Bitcoin Below $34,000; Ether, Dogecoin Also Fall

Bitcoin, the world’s most popular cryptocurrency fell over 4 per cent and was trading at $33,128 at around 12:15 pm. Its closest competitor Ether was down over 7 per cent in what seems to be a result of higher outflows.

All other cryptocurrencies were trading lower including Dogecoin, Cardano, XRP, Stellar, Uniswap, Chainlink, Polkadot and Litecoin.

Commenting on the brood-based fall, Edul Patel, CEO and Co-founder of Mudrex, a global algorithm-based crypto trading platform, said, “After the wonderful rally observed across the crypto spectrum in the past few days, we are curiously witnessing a profit booking session. Most of the major cryptos are down by around 5%.”

“Bitcoin investors are getting anxious as it is currently trading just above the $33,000 mark. Short sellers would be watching this closely as well. A drop below this level would likely see a huge number of short positions opening,” he added.

Patel went on to say that profit booking had a larger impact on some major altcoins. “Ether is down by approximately 6 per cent and Ethereum Classic tanked more than 7 per cent. The meme coins, Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, have taken quite a toll. Both these cryptos are down by approximately 8 per cent,” Patel said.

“Currently, Bitcoin and Ether are close to support levels and these levels would be closely tracked. In case these support levels are broken, we might see a further sell-off across the spectrum,” he said.

Here are the latest prices and trends of popular cryptocurrencies:

Meet Jellyfishbot, The Robotic Solution For Collecting Marine Waste

Tourists visiting the picturesque port at Cassis, southern France, often see an unedifying sight: plastic bags, discarded drinks bottles, and even used surgical masks, floating in the water among the boats in the marina. But the port has found a solution, in the shape of a bright yellow remote-controlled electric powered boat that weaves around the harbour sucking the trash into a net that it trails behind its twin hulls. The boat, called Jellyfishbot, is about the size of a suitcase and so can get into the corners and narrow spaces where rubbish tends to accumulate but which are difficult for cleaners with nets to reach.
“It can go everywhere,” said Nicolas Carlesi, who has a PhD in undersea robotics and whose company, IADYS, created the boat. It is not the only device of its kind. San Diego non-profit Clear Blue Sea is developing a proto-type trash-collecting robot called “FRED”. A marine technology firm based in the Netherlands, RanMarine, has developed a robot called the “Waste Shark” which has been deployed to clean up garbage in Rotterdam harbour.

“Jellyfishbot” is in operation in around 15 French ports, and has been exported to countries including Singapore, Japan and Norway, according to Carlesi’s company. The firm has just launched an autonomous version. A keen sailor and diver, Carlesi said he came up with the idea after noticing, whenever he spent leisure time on the water, how much rubbish bobbed in the water in ports. “I thought: ‘Why not try to make this difficult and sometimes thankless task of picking up trash easier?’ So we made this robot,” he said.

Mercedes-Benz Reports A Strong End To The First Half Of 2021; Delivers 4,857 New Vehicles In India

Mercedes-Benz India on Thursday reported a strong end to the first half of 2021, a period in which it delivered 4,857 new vehicles in the country. This is a growth of 65% over the same time period of 2020 even if it is important to note that the Covid-19 pandemic had varying effects on the auto market in both of these time periods.

Bolstered by a massive product-launch offensive, Mercedes has been leading the luxury charge in the Indian automobile industry. The company has plans of driving in as many as 15 new or updated car models in 2021 and has already set the pace with the likes of A-Class Limousine on the one side of the price spectrum to the S-Class 2021 and GLS Maybach on the other. So far, the carmaker has launched eight products this year and is scheduled to drive out the new AMG E 63S and AMG E 53 performance sedans next week.

Not surprisingly, even though there is a general increase in preference for SUVs across passenger vehicle segments and in many countries including India, luxury sedans from Mercedes still fare better than SUVs here. As such, the updated E-Class LWB – launched in March – was the best-selling Mercedes model in the first half of 2021, along with the GLE. Mercedes is also claiming that it continues to have a strong order intake for the EQC, its first-ever electric vehicle which was launched in India in late 2020. Mercedes also notes that around 20% of all sales in the first six months of 2021 have been online. In Covid-19 times, carmakers have had to bolster digital sales platforms and Mercedes reports 35% of all its sales in the country in April and May were made digitally. With restrictions in many parts of the country being eased or removed completely, the German carmaker expects to emerge even stronger and highlights it is beginning a ramp-up in production from this month onwards.

Equity Benchmarks Sensex And Nifty On A Slow Start Amid Weak Global Cues

Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty started on a choppy note on Thursday amid a negative trend in Asian peers.

The 30-share BSE index was trading 3.34 points or 0.01 per cent higher at 53,058.10 in initial deals, while the broader NSE Nifty inched 8.95 points or 0.06 per cent lower to 15,870.70.

Bajaj Auto was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising nearly 2 per cent, followed by Tech Mahindra, NTPC, IndusInd Bank, PowerGrid, M&M and HCL Tech.

On the other hand, UltraTech Cement, HUL, Sun Pharma and Nestle India were among the laggards.

In the previous session, Sensex climbed 193.58 points or 0.37 per cent to close at its fresh lifetime high of 53,054.76, and Nifty rose 61.40 points or 0.39 per cent to its record 15,879.65.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital market as they purchased shares worth Rs 532.94 crore on Wednesday, as per provisional exchange data.

Domestic equities do not look to be inspiring as of now. Notably, visible improvement in business momentum with ease of business curbs by states started offering comfort, said Binod Modi Head-Strategy at Reliance Securities.

However, profit-booking at higher levels is leading to bouts of correction in the market, traders said.

Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo were trading in the red in mid-session deals.

US equities ended on a positive note in the overnight session.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude advanced 0.01 per cent to USD 73.44 per barrel.

MSMEs Experience A Dent In Their Financial Performance; Large Corporates Gain From Low Rates

The operating profitability of companies rose in the pandemic year 2020-21, reversing the prior two-year trend of falling profits, even as the impact on profitability and debt repayment capacity has been varied depending upon the size of the firms. Large firms made good use of low-interest rates, wage costs and raw materials last year to boost operating profits. While large corporates strengthened their balance sheet, MSMEs experienced a dent in their financial performance.

In the three quarters of 2020-21 combined, the corporate sector’s revenues and expenditure declined by 11.6 per cent and 15.2 per cent, respectively, while operational profit (earnings before interest and taxes or EBIT) increased by 7 per cent year-on-year, as per a recent assessment by the Reserve Bank of India. The impact of Covid-19 has been varied for firms of different sizes/nature of operations.

“Evidence from both advanced and emerging economies show that smaller-sized firms are relatively more vulnerable to extended periods of lockdown. Larger firms may have found it easier to cut costs compared to smaller firms during the lockdown. In India, although the interest coverage ratio (ICR) deteriorated for firms of all size categories in 2020-21, small firms appear to have been affected more by the lockdown in Q1:2020-21,” the RBI noted in its analysis on firm profitability and debt servicing capacity.

Both small and large firms, however, improved their debt serviceability ratios in Q3 to levels that are higher than the pre-pandemic period. The rise in profits and a sharp decline in borrowing costs led to recovery in their interest coverage ratio. Industry-wise sectors which depend on discretionary spending by consumers were impacted more (such as hotels, recreation services, gems and jewellery). Sectors that were excluded from the lockdown (such as food and utilities) experienced a relatively lower deterioration in interest coverage ratio in Q1 FY21.

After the sharp fall in sales and profitability in Q1 FY21 following the nationwide lockdown last year, companies continued with their cost-cutting strategies in the following quarters. Falling interest rates, low wage and other input costs, alongside recovery in sales, enabled corporate India to straighten operating profits and balance sheets in the following quarters during the previous financial year.

In Q1 FY21, average revenue from sales contracted by 32 per cent for a sample of 2,536 listed firms. Firms resorted to aggressive cost-cutting measures, enabling them to lower their total expenditure by 34 per cent. Profits nosedived, endangering their debt-servicing capacity. Indian corporates, however, adjusted quickly to the altered business environment. As sales recovered in Q2 FY21, cost-cutting continued as the preferred path to regain efficiency and return to profitability, the RBI said.

While revenue contraction moderated to 5.3 per cent, total expenditure contracted by 12.5 per cent, enabling net operating profit to rise by 33.4 per cent in Q2. However, in Q3, revenue increased by 2.0 per cent and expenditure increased by 0.3 per cent that led to further increase in profits by 35.6 per cent. Rising profitability in the third and fourth quarters helped in improving the firms’ debt servicing capacity.

California To Pay Reparations Of $25,000 To The Survivors Of Forced Sterilisation

The California state in the United States is set to pay reparations of up to $25,000 to the survivors of decades of horrific practice call ‘eugenics’. The practice, which was prevalent from 1909-1979, the government sterilized some people, mostly with mental illness or physical disability, whom it deemed unfit to have children, according to the news agency Associated Press. Some of the victims of this practice include people as young as 13-year-old, the AP report further said.

The supporters of the ‘eugenics’ believed the people with such “undesirable traits should not have children” in order to improve the human race.

According to the Associated Press, more than 20,000 people were sterilized under this practice until the law was repealed in 1979. Notably, since the practice is so old, only a few hundred people might be alive by now.

The state has set aside $7.5 million for the reparations program, part of its $262.6 billion operating budget that is awaiting governor Gavin Newsom’s signature.

California is the third state in the US after Virginia and North Carolina to make compensation to the victims of the so-called “eugenics movement”. Along with this, the state government will pay compensation to women who were sterilised in the prisons. Of which, some cases could be as recently as 2010, the news agency also reported.

Between 2005 to 2013, California sterilized at least 144 women, it also reported. “We must address and face our horrific history,” said Lorena Garcia Zermeño, policy and communications coordinator for the advocacy group California Latinas for Reproductive Justice. “This isn’t something that just happened in the past.”

It also reported that the state while all of the women signed consent forms, officials in 39 cases did not do everything that was legally required to obtain their permission for the sterilization.

The first eugenics sterilization law was introduced in Indiana state in 1907. Later, it expanded to 30 states. It reached California in 1909. It was by far the largest program, accounting for about a third of everyone sterilized in the United States under those laws.

Explosion Erupts On A Container Ship At Major Global Port In Dubai

A fiery explosion erupted on a container ship anchored in Dubai at one of the world’s largest ports late Wednesday, authorities said, sending tremors across the commercial hub of the United Arab Emirates. The blaze sent up giant orange flames on a vessel at the crucial Jebel Ali Port, the busiest in the Middle East that sits on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula.

The combustion unleashed a shock wave through the skyscraper-studded city of Dubai, causing walls and windows to shake in neighborhoods as far as 25 kilometers (15 miles) away from the port. Panicked residents filmed from their high-rises as a fiery ball illuminated the night sky. The blast was powerful enough to be seen from space by a satellite.

There were no immediate reports of casualties at the port, which is also the busiest port of call for American warships outside the U.S.

Some 2 1/2 hours after the blast, Dubai’s civil defense teams said they had brought the fire under control and started the “cooling process.” Authorities posted footage on social media of firefighters dousing giant shipping containers. The glow of the blaze remained visible in the background as civil defense crews worked to contain the fire.

The extent of damage caused to the sprawling port and surrounding cargo was not immediately clear. Footage shared on social media of the aftermath showed charred containers, ashes and littered debris.

The sheer force and visibility of the explosion suggested the presence of a highly combustible substance. Dubai authorities told the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya TV that the crew had evacuated in time and that the fire appeared to have started in one of the containers holding “flammable material,” without elaborating.

Seeking to downplay the explosion, Mona al-Marri, director-general of Dubai Media Office, told Al-Arabiya the incident “could happen anywhere in the world” and that authorities were investigating the cause.

The Jebel Ali Port at the northern end of Dubai is the largest man-made deep-water harbor in the world and serves cargo from the Indian subcontinent, Africa and Asia. The port is not only a critical global cargo hub but a lifeline for Dubai and surrounding emirates, serving as the point of entry for essential imports.

Dubai authorities did not identify the stricken ship beyond saying it was a small vessel with a capacity of 130 containers.

Ship tracker MarineTraffic showed a fleet of small support vessels surrounding a docked container ship called the Ocean Trader flagged in Comoros. Footage from the scene rebroadcast by the UAE’s state-run WAM news agency showed firefighters hosing down a vessel bearing paint and logo that corresponds to the Ocean Trader, operated by the Dubai-based Inzu Ship Charter.

The Ocean Trader docked at Jebel Ali Port at midday Wednesday. Ship tracking data showed the vessel had been sailing up and down the coast of the UAE since April. The United Nations ship database identified the vessel’s owners as Sash Shipping corporation. Sash and Inzu Ship Charter did not immediately respond to the request for comment.

Operated by the Dubai-based DP World, Jebel Ali Port boasts a handling capacity of over 22 million containers and sprawling terminals that can berth some of the world’s largest ships. Port officials said they were “taking all necessary measures to ensure that the normal movement of vessels continues without any disruption.”

State-owned DP World describes Jebel Ali Port as a “gateway hub” and a “vital link in the global trade network” that connects eastern and western markets. The company did not immediately respond to request for comment on the blast.

Highly Transmissible Delta Strain Becomes Dominant Variant In US

The highly transmissible Delta strain has overtaken the Alpha variant to become the dominant variant in the US, according to new estimates from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Delta, which was first found in India and is now in over 100 countries, represented 51.7 per cent of new infections in the US over the two weeks ending July 3, Xinhua news agency reported citing the CDC.

Meanwhile, the proportion of new cases caused by Alpha, which was first detected in Britain, was just 28.7 per cent over the same time period, according to the CDC.

Recently, health officials and experts have warned that the Delta variant was on track to become the dominant variant in the US, as its prevalence in the nation doubles about every two weeks.

They are concerned the variant will cause a surge in new cases this fall, hitting the unvaccinated population the hardest.

Increasing cases were reported in states with lower vaccination rates, including Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, according to the CDC.

Although Delta is highly contagious, research show that most vaccines still remain highly effective at preventing hospitalizations and deaths caused by the variant.

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday pushed for all eligible Americans to get Covid-19 vaccinations, stressing the importance of being protected against Delta.

The country reached its highest vaccination rate in mid-April when the seven-day average of doses administered daily topped about 3.4 million. But the rate has dropped since then.

About 47.6 per cent of the US population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and 55.1 per cent of the population has received at least one shot as of Wednesday, CDC data show.

Biden set a goal in May of having 70 per cent of American adults receive at least one Covid-19 shot by the Fourth of July. But just 18 states and Washington, DC surpassed that goal by the date, according to a Forbes report.

Uk Reports 32,548 Coronavirus Cases; The Highest Daily Increase Since January

Britain has reported another 32,548 coronavirus cases in the latest 24-hour period, the highest daily increase since January, according to official figures released on Wednesday.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 4,990,916, the Xinhua news agency reported.

The country also recorded another 33 coronavirus-related deaths, bringing the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain to 128,301. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test.

More than 45.5 million people in Britain have received the first jab of Covid-19 vaccine and over 34 million people have received two doses, the official figures showed.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Monday that most Covid-19 restrictions are set to end on July 19 as part of the final step of England’s roadmap out of the lockdown.

This will be confirmed on July 12 following a review of the latest data by the British government.

The plans were greeted with mixed reactions.

Leader of the main opposition Labour Party Keir Starmer accused Johnson of putting the country on course for a “summer of chaos and confusion” with his plans, Sky News reported.

But when answering questions at the parliament, Johnson said that the government was taking a prudent approach by “moving away from self-isolation towards testing over the course of the next few weeks”, according to media reports.

To bring life back to normal, countries such as Britain, China, Russia, the US as well as the European Union have been racing against time to roll out coronavirus vaccines.

Belgium’s Africa Museum Begins Process To Return Stolen Art To Congo

From the late 19th century to 1960, thousands of artworks including wooden statues, elephant ivory masks, manuscripts and musical instruments were likely taken by Belgian and other European collectors, scientists, explorers and soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Belgium’s Africa Museum, once a celebration of the country’s colonial rule, will begin a multi-year process of returning stolen art to the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Belgian government said on Tuesday.

From the late 19th century to 1960, thousands of art works including wooden statues, elephant ivory masks, manuscripts and musical instruments were likely taken by Belgian and other European collectors, scientists, explorers and soldiers.

Following a 66-million-euro ($78 million) overhaul of the Africa Museum to take a more critical view of Belgium’s colonial past, the government is ready to meet DRC calls for restitution.

“The approach is very simple: everything that was acquired through illegitimate means, through theft, through violence, through pillaging, must be given back,” Belgian junior minister Thomas Dermine told Reuters. “It doesn’t belong to us.”

Millions of Congolese are estimated to have died from the late 19th century when Congo was first a personal fiefdom of King Leopold II, before becoming a colony of the Belgian state.

Belgium will transfer legal ownership of the artefacts to DRC. But it will not immediately ship artworks to the country from the museum in Tervuren, just outside Brussels, unless they are specifically requested by DRC authorities.

That is partly because the museum, which has proved popular since its renovation and attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors before the Covid-19 pandemic, wants to keep artefacts on display. One option is to pay a loan fee to DRC.

Belgium says the Congolese authorities are conscious of the bigger audience in Belgium compared to DRC, which is one of the world’s poorest countries, according to the United Nations. It has few cultural centres or storage facilities.

“The museum believes it will be able to cooperate with the Congolese authorities, as is common among international institutions, to keep the objects in Belgium via loan agreements,” said museum director Guido Gryseels.

The museum also has a huge number of artefacts whose provenance is unclear. It hopes to use a team of scientists and experts over the next five years to identify them and to separate those that were acquired legally by the museum.

“In five years with a lot of resources we can do a lot, but it could be work for the next 10 to 20 years to be absolutely sure of all the objects we have, that we know the precise circumstances in which they were acquired,” Gryseels said.

Placide Mumbembele Sanger, a professor of anthropology at the University of Kinshasa who is working at the museum in Tervuren, said the process was a simple one.

“These are objects going back to their natural context so I don’t see why we should ask so many questions,” he said. “It’s as if you go out and someone steals your wallet and the person asks you whether or not you are ready to have it back.”

Cryptocurrency Prices Today: Bitcoin, Ether Gain But Remain Under Pressure

Popular cryptocurrencies were under pressure on Wednesday as China continues its crackdown on virtual coin trade.

Bitcoin, the world’s most popular cryptocurrency, gained marginally by 0.06 percent at 11:20 am. Dogecoin was also struggling to gain momentum and fell nearly 2 percent. Ether gained over 2.80 percent and was trading at $2,383.58.

Valuations of other popular cryptocurrencies remained mixed as China’s central bank ordered the shutdown of a Beijing-based software maker over its suspected involvement in cryptocurrency trading.

Authorities ordered Beijing Qudao Cultural Development Co Ltd to suspend operations, and its website has been deactivated. The development was confirmed in a statement by the Beijing financial supervision administration and a department of the People’s Bank of China.

The statement said companies in Beijing should not provide venues, commercial displays or advertising for cryptocurrency-related businesses.

In another negative development, major cryptocurrency exchange Binance has suspended Euro bank deposits from one of Europe’s key payments networks. The development was reported by The Financial Times.

Binance said from 8 am universal coordinated time on Wednesday, customers would no longer be able to deposit funds through the Single Euro Payments Area, or Sepa schemes. It added that the move was due to “events beyond control”.

It may be noted that the major cryptocurrency exchange is currently facing scrutiny in a number of countries including the US, Britain and Thailand. The development has made investors nervous, but analysts indicate that it will not have any long-term impact.

While virtual coin prices have been gaining this week, there has been no significant upward movement due to the developments mentioned above. Moreover, the rise in the valuation of the US dollar has also weighed in on cryptocurrencies.

R3 Strong Radio Blackout Occurs In Certain Regions Around The Atlantic Ocean

On July 3 around 8 pm IST, the sun emitted a large solar flare that was observed by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. Solar flares are magnetic storms launched from the sun, releasing energy equivalent to a few million hydrogen bombs exploding at the same time.

During a solar flare, the highly energetic charged particles are expelled from the sun at speeds close to that of the speed of light. These rays can disturb the ionosphere region of the Earth, which plays an important role in radio communications. The US NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center tweeted that a strong radio blackout occurred in certain regions around the Atlantic Ocean on July 3.

“When radiation, energetic particles and solar plasma material released during a solar flare interact with the Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere, it creates strong geomagnetic storms. This induces strong currents at ground levels which can trip electric power grids in countries situated at high latitudes, impacting air traffic on polar routes,” explained Prof Dibyendu Nandi from the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Kolkata. He noted that sensitive satellite sensors can also be damaged. “Also, the radiation ionises the Earth’s upper atmosphere, changing conditions in the ionosphere, which is very important for high-frequency radio communications used by defense agencies, airline operators, and emergency services,” he added.

One of the biggest impacts of solar flares in history resulted in a large portion of the North American power grid failing. On March 13, 1989, Quebec, Canada, suffered a power blackout that lasted for over 12 hours, and radio signals were jammed due to the solar flare. NASA noted that some satellites tumbled out of control and the TDRS-1 communication satellite recorded over 250 anomalies as the high energy from the flare affected its sensitive electronics.

The government has brought the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) under the Finance Ministry in a bid to facilitate its ambitious disinvestment program. Earlier, DPE was part of the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.

“Ministry of Finance (Vitta Mantralaya), after the sub-heading (v) Department of Financial Services (Vittiya Sewayen Vibhag), following sub-heading shall be inserted, namely:- (vi) Department of Public Enterprises (Lok Udyam Vibhag)” as per the Cabinet Secretariat notification dated July 6, 2021.

The gazette notification issued said these rules may be called the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Three Hundred and Sixty-First Amendment Rules, 2021. “They shall come into force at once,” the notification said. With the addition, this will be the sixth department under the Finance Ministry.

The rejig comes ahead of Cabinet expansion slated later in the day. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget 2021-22 had announced a big-ticket privatization agenda, including privatization of two public sector banks and one general insurance company.

As part of the divestment strategy for the financial sector, the government has decided to go for a mega initial public offering (IPO) of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and residual stake sale in IDBI Bank during the financial year beginning April. Tata Motors Shares Extend Their Loss; Slipped Over 3 Percent

Shares of Tata Motors extended their losses and slipped over 3 percent in early trade on Wednesday.

The stock dipped as much as 3.36 percent each to Rs 306.30 apiece on the BSE and Rs 306.25 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) during the early morning trade on Wednesday.

At 11:42 am, Tata Motors stock was at Rs 312.00, down Rs 4.95 (1.56 percent) on the BSE and at Rs 312.20, down Rs 4.70 (1.48 percent) on NSE. Over 41.74 lakh shares were traded on the BSE so far in the intraday trade while over 5.95 crore shares exchanged hands on NSE.

On Tuesday, Tata Motors scrip had gone into a tailspin erasing early gains and crashed over 8 percent lower on both the exchanges triggered by a selloff towards the end of the trade session.

The automaker’s UK subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) on Tuesday reported a 68.1 percent year-on-year rise in retail sales for the quarter ended June 2021 at 124,537 units. It had retailed 74,067 units in the April-June quarter last year.

Wholesales were up 72.6 percent on-year at 84,442 units (excluding China JV). However, wholesales were around 30,000 units lower than demand would have permitted due to semiconductor supply constraints and impacts of Covid-19 affecting the global auto industry, JLR said in its statement.

“Looking ahead, the chip shortage is presently very dynamic and difficult to forecast,” the statement said adding that based on the recent inputs from suppliers, JLR now expects chip supply shortages in the second quarter ended September 2021, to be greater than in the first quarter, potentially resulting in wholesale volumes about 50 percent lower than planned.

“We expect the situation will start to improve in the second half of our financial year. However, the broader underlying structural capacity issues will only be resolved as supplier investment in new capacities comes online over the next 12-18 months and so we expect some level of shortages will continue through to the end of the year and beyond,” the JLR statement noted.

“While the present supply constraints continue, the company will continue to prioritize production of higher-margin vehicles for the chip supply available as well as make chip and product specification changes wherever possible to reduce the impact,” it said.

“In the scenario above, we expect an operating cash outflow of about £1 billion with a negative EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) margin in the second quarter and a substantial improvement in underlying* operating cash flow in the second half of the financial year as chip supply improves,” the automaker said.
