Tamil Nadu rains: Several areas submerge in floodwater in Chennai

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India]: Several areas in Chennai have been partially submerged in floodwater after torrential rains over the past few days on Saturday. “We are suffering due to rain for the past few days. The water level has come to 4 feet. Taliban expand interim cabinet, 27 new members named

Kabul [Afghanistan]: The Taliban on Tuesday said that they have expanded their interim cabinet by adding 27 new members. Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the interim government, said the appointments had been made in compliance with orders from Taliban’s supreme leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, reported Pajhwok Afghan News.More than two dozen high-level officials, including ministers and deputy ministers, were named. Pakistan hikes petrol price amid rising inflation

Islamabad [Pakistan] : Pakistani government on Saturday increased the prices of petrol and diesel in the country amid rising inflation, local media reported.The price of petrol has been hiked by Pakistani Rs 10.49 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs 12.44 per litre, Geo TV reported. Along with this, the price of kerosene oil also has been hiked by Rs 10.95 per litre, while light diesel was hiked by Rs 8.84 per litre.This is the second time in the last 15 days that the government has increased the prices of petroleum products.On October 1, the Pakistan government increased petrol prices by Rs 4 per litre and that of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs 2 per litre. Covid-19: India reports 41,965 new cases, 460 deaths in last 24 hrs

New Delhi, Sep 1: India logged 41,965 new COVID-19 cases and 460 fatalities in the last 24 hours as the positivity rate rose to 2.61 per cent in the country, the Union Health Ministry said on Wednesday. North Korea appears to have restarted its nuclear reactor: UN

Pyongyang, Aug 30(UNI) According to the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) North Korea has secretly restarted its Yongbyon nuclear reactor, a report by the UN atomic agency said here on Sunday. The agency said that the reactor is believed to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons, the BBC reported here on Monday. Japan to continue evacuation from Kabul undeterred by blasts

Tokyo, Aug 27: Japan will continue to evacuate its citizens and diplomatic staff from Kabul despite the deadly blasts that rocked the airport, claiming many lives, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said on Friday. On Thursday, the Afghan capital was hit by a series of terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of at least 60 people and injured over 1,300 others, according to the Afghan health ministry. The Islamic State-Khorasan terrorist group (banned in Russia) reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks. United Nations, Aug 23: The United Nations on Sunday flew 120 persons from Kabul to Almaty, Kazakhstan, in addition to the relocation of 100 UN staff members on Wednesday. Passengers included UN personnel and members of several nongovernmental organizations that serve as implementing partners of the UN in Afghanistan, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Part of the UN personnel who left Kabul on Sunday will continue to work remotely in Almaty, he said. The UN in Afghanistan is currently focused on the safety of the thousands of its personnel and partners who remain on the ground, as well as the delivery of critical humanitarian and other assistance to millions of Afghans in need, Dujarric said.

Dhaka, Aug 14: Bangladesh reported 6,885 new COVID-19 cases and 178 new deaths on Saturday, making the tally at 1,412,218 and death toll at 23,988, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.The official data showed that 33,330 samples were tested in the last 24 hours as of 8:00 a.m. local time Saturday across Bangladesh.The total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 1,281,327 including 7,805 new recoveries, said the DGHS.According to the official data, the COVID-19 fatality rate in Bangladesh is now 1.70 percent and the current recovery rate is 90.73 percent.

Health officials also said there was an increase in the mosquito population and warned of the risk of of dengue spreading further in the coming days, especially in urban and semi-urban areas. Washington, Aug 10: The Chinese social video platform TikTok became the most downloaded app among social networks in 2020, edging out Facebook Messenger, Japan’s Nikkei newspaper reported on Tuesday. TikTok topped the list of social media downloads in 2020 for the first time since Nikkei began conducting its annual survey in 2018. A year earlier, TikTok ranked fourth. Bangladesh reports 11,164 more COVID-19 cases

Dhaka, Aug 10: The daily COVID-19 deaths in Bangladesh hit a record high of 264 on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 23,161, said the country’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The previous record of 264 deaths was reported on August 5. The official data showed 11,164 more new cases were recorded, taking the national tally to 1,376,322. A total of 47,424 samples were tested in the past 24 hours as of 8:00 a.m. local time Tuesday across the country, said the DGHS. It said the total number of recovered patients in the country stood at 1,234,762, including 14,903 new recoveries. According to the official data, the COVID-19 fatality rate in Bangladesh is 1.68 percent and the current recovery rate is 89.71 percent.

Singapore, Aug 5: Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 98 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, bringing the total tally in the country to 65,508. The new infections included 96 locally transmitted cases, of which 38 were linked to previous cases and have already been placed on quarantine, while 20 were linked to previous cases and were detected through surveillance, and 38 were currently unlinked. The other two were imported cases, who had already been placed on Stay-Home Notice (SHN) or isolated upon arrival in Singapore. A total of 577 cases are currently warded in the hospital. Maharashtra flood; 209 people dead, 8 missing due to heavy rains and floods

Mumbai (Maharastra) [India], July 28 (ANI): The death toll in Maharashtra has climbed to 209 and eight people are still missing due to heavy rains and floods in the state, reported the data of the State Disaster Management Unit on Wednesday. According to the information of the management unit, 43 roads have been submerged and a bridge on the Vashisthi river was damaged at Chiplun due to heavy floods. At least 57 migrants die in shipwreck off Libyan coast

Tripoli, Jul 27 (UNI) At least 57 people drowned after their boat capsized off the Libyan coast near Khums, International Organization for Migration (IOM) spokesperson Safa Msehli said in a statement. “A shipwreck off Libya claims at least 57 lives today after a boat capsized near Khums,” Msehli said via Twitter late last night. According to survivors brought to shore by fishermen and the coast guard, at least 20 women and two children were among those who drowned.” Eighteen of the migrants were rescued and returned to shore by fishermen and Libya’s coastguard, Msehli said. The survivors, who are from Nigeria, Ghana and Gambia, reported the vessel had stopped due to an engine problem, then capsized amid bad weather, Msehli said. Bandipora: Two militants have been killed in a gunfight that broke out between militants and security forces at Shokbaba area of Sumlar in North Kashmir’s Bandipora.  Official sources told News24 that a Joint team of security forces launched a cordon and search operation after “specific inputs” about presence of militants in the forest area of Shokbaba. “As the security forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter,” officials said.  Top police officials confirmed the killing of two unidentified militants so far during the gunfight, while search operation was going on in the area.
