‘Sidney Poitier changed the way America saw itself’

Washington [US], (ANI): US President Joe Biden praised Sidney Poitier, the legendary Hollywood star who was the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Actor, as a “once-in-a-generation actor and advocate whose work carried so much dignity, power, and grace that it changed the world on and off the big screen.”

“Jill and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Sidney Poitier, the once-in-a-generation actor and advocate whose work carried so much dignity, power, and grace that it changed the world on and off the big screen,” the US President said in a White House statement.
Biden said that Poitier “was more than just one of the finest actors in our history. His iconic performances in films like The Defiant Ones, A Raisin in the Sun, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and In the Heat of the Night held a mirror up to America’s racial attitudes in the 1950s and 1960s. With unflinching grandeur and poise — his singular warmth, depth, and stature on-screen — Sidney helped open the hearts of millions and changed the way America saw itself.”

Furthermore in the statement, the US President added: “The son of tomato farmers in the Bahamas, Sidney became the first Black man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor — but the trail he blazed extended leaps and bounds beyond his background or profession. He blazed a path for our nation to follow, and a legacy that touches every part of our society today. Jill and I send our love and prayers to Sidney’s wife, Joanna, his daughters, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. May God bless Sidney Poitier.”

Earlier, the former American President Barack Obama paid tribute to Sidney Poitier today, calling him a singular talent” who “epitomized dignity and grace.”

“Through his groundbreaking roles and singular talent, Sidney Poitier epitomized dignity and grace, revealing the power of movies to bring us closer together. He also opened doors for a generation of actors. Michelle and I send our love to his family and legion of fans,” he tweeted.

‘Star Trek: Picard’ filming halted !

Washington [US]: The filming of Paramount plus drama ‘Star Trek: Picard’ has been paused since Monday after more than 50 crew members tested positive for COVID-19.

Insiders told The Hollywood Reporter that more than 50 members of the large production tested positive on Monday, which was the first day of work after the Christmas break.
The series has reportedly one of television’s biggest crews, numbering more than 450 staffers. The infections impacted multiple zones, including cast in zone A.

The filming of the Patrick Stewart led series was paused immediately on Monday and has remained dark since. Sources also told that says filming is expected to resume early next week, if not sooner, though details remain under the wraps.

‘Picard’ was formally renewed for a third season in September, with seasons two and three being filmed back to back in a bid to control costs and accommodate production schedules.

Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Evan Evagora, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Jeri Ryan, Orla Brady, John de Lancie, Annie Wersching and Brent Spiner star in ‘Star Trek: Picard’, which is produced by ‘Star Trek’ franchise captain Alex Kurtzman. Akiva Goldsman serves as co-showrunner alongside Terry Matalas.

The Omicron surge has prompted a number of shows to pause filming this week, with fellow CBS Studios-produced series including NCIS among those that have been impacted.

Major events including the Grammy Awards and a number of TV and film red carpets have been cancelled. The Sundance Film Festival has also opted to air virtually.

NO WAY HOME-: FILM REVIEW

Nostalgia and heart is what defines the third installment in the MCU Spiderman film.

The film starts with Peter’s identity revealed to the world, and what follows in a world of mobile phones, paparazzi and The Daily Bugle – both fame and ignominy. One fallout is the rejection by MIT of not just Peter’s college application but also of friends MJ (a charming Zendaya) and Ned (a winsome Batalon). It’s this that ultimately drives Peter to ask Dr Strange to turn the clock back to the time before his identity was revealed or, if not that, to make people forget who he was.

Superheroes nowadays can’t just have fun and beat the bad guys. There has to be a larger purpose to their gift. What Peter chooses at this point is set to have consequences that he doesn’t really think through – or the film even lets him face.

The creatures who step out of the parallel universes into ours are a lot more fun. Molina has the meatiest screen presence and gets his own delectable fight on a bridge, complete with dangling cars and swinging men and women. Dafoe largely snarls and gnarls, but when they do get together, the actors who personify two of the greatest Super-Men villains, remain vile but now are also much funnier.

spider manno way home dr octopus
Alfred Molina

The same is true of two other creatures who step in through a portal into our universe. The shrieks with which the cinema audience greets them say all about how much they have been missed despite the years in the middle. Holland, whose Spider-Man has always been just one of the many Avengers, holds up well when called to be one of a team.

The editing is wobbly and rushed in several scenes but is far from capable in denying the fun that everyone has been seeking for.

The dialogue is witty and funny, Holland, Zendaya and Batalon are believable as kids who find themselves often out of their depth, the battles are coherently staged, a mirror dimension of the world that Dr Strange builds in one such clash is just wow, Spider-Man is satisfyingly nerdy (“What’s cooler than magic? Math”), and the past is adroitly linked with the present.

Yes, No Way Home is all that you have been hearing and talking about. Yes, it gives you bangs to the power of three for your buck. Yes, it is gratifying to indulge in your favourite Spider-Men films of the recent past once more. And yes,Holland remains as likable and eager as ever.

But when the dust settles on this metaverse of multiple villains and many heroes, which Cumberbatch’s Dr Strange conjures out of some very furiously moving hands and not seemingly as engaged thoughts, it’s unclear what all that was about.

Bryan Adams tests COVID-19 positive for second time in one month

Washington [US], November 26 (ANI): Singer and guitarist Bryan Adams has tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time in a month and is receiving treatment at a hospital in Italy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Canadian rock star posted the news on his official Instagram account on Thursday, after landing in Italy and testing positive at Milan’s Malpensa airport.
“Here I am, just arrived in Milano, and I’ve tested positive for the second time in a month for COVID. So it’s off to the hospital for me,” Adams wrote in the post.

Adams had previously tested positive for COVID-19 on October 30, hours before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony at which he was due to perform the song ‘It’s Only Love’ with H.E.R. in honour of inductee Tina Turner. His last-minute exit caused a reshuffle with Keith Urban stepping in to replace him.

The ‘Baby When You’re Gone’ singer arrived in Italy to launch and do press events for the 2022 issue of the iconic Pirelli calendar which he had photographed.

A long-time and well-regarded photographer, Adams’ shoot for the Pirelli calendar, popularly known as ‘The Cal’, was named On the Road and shot in Los Angeles and subjects included Iggy Pop, St. Vincent, Grimes, Rita Ora, Normani, Cher, Jennifer Hudson and Saweetie.

Adams was due to shoot the 2021 Pirelli calendar but it was cancelled due to the pandemic, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

VENOM 2 REVIEW-:LET THERE BE CARNAGE CUZ ITS BEEN BARREN ALL YEAR.

Reluctantly accepting his fate, Eddie Brock tries to co-exist with Venom. However, it’s a rocky relationship, to say the least. Brock also attempts to revive his career by interviewing Cletus Kasady, a serial killer who doesn’t trust anyone else. But things go wrong when Cletus also gets infected with a deadly and bloodthirsty symbiote. Brock must quickly find a way to work with Venom and deal with the Carnage brought on by Kasady.

Tom Hardy Called Andy Serkis for Venom Motion Capture Help | IndieWire

Although the plot is pretty straightforward for a comic-book flick, the banter between Brock and Venom is often the film’s most fascinating element. Brock is constantly trying to quench Venom’s thirst for, well, HUMANS! leading to some amusing exchanges – even if the humour doesn’t land always.

Nevertheless, Tom Hardy’s performance with the CGI character carries the film through some rough patches. Like Hardy, Woody Harrelson fully embraces the film’s quirky, often absurd tonality and certainly enjoys playing the antagonist. Together, they make some of the apparent plot holes easier to ignore.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Anne Weying (Michelle Williams), Francis Barrison (Naomie Harris) and Patrick Mulligan (Stephen Graham). They have potentially intriguing roles but don’t get much development beyond some hasty plot beats and they end up being the story’s weakest links. In addition, the editing is shady in places, indicative of significant trimming, perhaps the right decision.

The action is easy to follow and looks great in 3D without being overbearing. While the film meets the basic requirements for comic-book movie enjoyment, its most essential sequence is the post-credit scene that raises the bar for the Venom character.

Not only does it change the scope for where he and Eddie Brock will show up next, but it also makes this problematic yet oddly entertaining sequel more than worthwhile.

DUNE PART 1- THE NEXT LORD OF THE RINGS?

Review By SACHIN SISODIA

Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence, only those who can conquer their own fear will survive.

Dune is an 2021 american science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by Jon Spaihts. However it is only a part one as Mr. Villeneuve wished to adapt the book into two parts to fully realize the epic and grand scope of the whole story.

Dune (2021) - IMDb
Timothee Chalamet as PAUL ATRIEDES

Which seems to have worked very well in this case as this film has a lot of subplots, world building, characters, overarching themes and stories, character arcs running all alongside one another, all of them masterfully executed and told by Denis and his team resulting in a film that looks epic, is beautifully edited, wonderfully paced, accompanied with Hans Zimmer’s bombastic and sometimes melodious score, amazing cinematography, beautiful sci-fi tech on which clearly the millions have been spent by Warner Bros.

Coming to the other aspects, Dune mostly if not completely delivers a decent sci-fi epic.Packed with an impressive cast led by Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson who play Paul Atreides and Lady Jessica respectively.Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Stellen Skarsgaard, Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa are also there and play their parts well enough.Zendaya and Javier Bardem eventually join in towards the end.

Rebecca Ferguson as the mother of Paul is the standout character and performer followed by Timothee’s Paul. Their mother-son relationship and bond is believable and relatable and perhaps the most emotional string of the film. There are quite a few characters that are dispatched in this film, but for whatever reason they were never fully realized to begin with, maybe there wasn’t enough run time.

Dune' Release Plans: Why Warner Bros. Is Keeping the Film on HBO Max - Variety
Timothee Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson in‘DUNE’

So you are left a little distant when their eventual fates are realized. You feel for Paul as he witnesses or learns about their tragedies, but not specifically for them.Since also this is a part one the film abruptly ends just as when it seemed a new chapter was beginning.”This is only the beginning” Zendaya’s character Chani says.

There are plenty of visions and dreams and forewarnings of things to come that we see through Paul’s visions all of them hinting at bigger, complex, important revelations and battles which I guess we’ll have to wait for. The film takes its time at world building and hence you are never confused and very much enthralled at the visual spectacle on the big screen.

Paul is an interesting character if not the greatest, he has the personality of a calm, slightly timid, overprotected kid of the royal family, who when thrown in the worst of circumstances has to learn to adapt and survive and perhaps live upto his parents expectations and his own. Filled with doubt and uncertainty but gifted with power, his heart is stricken with turmoil as he needs to decide on whether he should become the leader like his parents wish him to be or he should be something else.”A great man never seeks to lead, he is called to it” says Oscar Isaac who plays his father Leto Atriedes.

Overall, Denis delivers a competent sci-fi epic which dazzles with it’s filmmaking and more or less captures your intrigue with its new and promising world and diverse characters even if a little more work could be done for some of the characters.

Is this the new Lord Of The Rings ? Will there even be a part 2 ? Will this film even score a profit at the box office with the current situations ? Dune part 1 may not be a great film however it is a good film even if it leaves you on a bit of an unfulfilling note which can only be done justice with a sequel film for which this one needs to be a massive success.

Black Widow-: UTTERLY POINTLESS AND BORING

Review By-:Sachin Sisodia

Black Widow is a terribly made, utterly ridiculous, pointless, CGI fest with occasionally some good moments in it.

The film has a promising and a tense opening finally giving us an insight into Natasha’s past and her background and then it opens again with some credits and music and takes another 10-15 minutes to actually kickstart it’s story and plot.

The screenwriters never really settle on a particular thread and keep juggling different ideas and story beats resulting in a mess of a film.

The action is cartoonish and quite pathetic. Natasha a spy, a normal human falls off a three storey bulding and hits her head twice on some pipes and gets back up immediately without a scratch.

The actors do their part but the script is haywire and there seems to be a lack of creativity from the people who helmed it , everything just comes across as mundane and flat.

The villain, well……. Taskmaster shows up occasionally. The film tries to tie Natasha and the villain’s stories together but it is done in such an odd haphazard way that ultimately it leaves you feeling frustrated instead of emotionally capturing you.

The movie is genuinely uninteresting and is an abysmal send off for one of the most beloved MCU characters and Actors. The editing is fine , the cinematography is bland, the music is forgettable.

David Harbour and Florence Pugh may be the only positives in this film along with Scarlett’s presence, all three of them have a genuinely good chemistry which does bring a few laughs and emotions from our side.

The film has a weird and twisted morality and a clear and obvious undertone which it didn’t need and quite frankly leaves a sick taste in your mouth.

Don’t waste Your time with this , go watch Winter Soldier instead.

Squid Game’s Lee Jung-Jae Reveals Hollywood’s Reaction To His Performance

Netflix’s ‘Squid Game’ is undoubtedly on its way to breaking records of becoming one of the biggest shows in a short time on the platform. The show’s leading actor Lee Jung-jae recently shared how Hollywood has responded to his performance in the series.

In a recent interview with Variety, the actor who plays Seong Gi-hun in the Netflix hit revealed how Tinseltown has reacted to his performance in the show. For those thinking that the actor might have received endless calls from the big directors, the actor revealed that “No proposals or requests have come my way, but, if the right one came along, I’d be happy to be in overseas production. It could be fun.”

His character Seong Gi-hun in the series is a divorced dad with a severe gambling addiction and a tendency to be self-involved. He lives with his mother and struggles to support his daughter financially. He participates in the Game to settle his many debts.

His character has received immense love and overwhelming reaction from the show’s fans and according to Lee, he had apparently predicted that the series would reach audiences beyond his home country.

“I didn’t expect this kind of success at all when I first boarded Squid Game as a project. But when I read the script, I understood that it contained elements that could resonate with everyone and work outside of Korea,” he told Variety.

The actor, who has now undoubtedly a well-established career in South Korea, also shared that nothing much has changed for him as an actor, despite the fact that ‘Squid Game’ is set to be the streamer’s “biggest non-English-language show” worldwide.

“Nothing much has changed for me as an actor, but Gi-hun’s character changes a lot over the course of the show. It has a large spectrum, which any actor would want to try out at least once in his career. This was possibly the first time I’ve played a character with such a range,” he said about himself during Squid Game’s ongoing success.

Best known for his role as Baltimore stick-up man Omar Little on HBO’s ‘The Wire’, Williams was a critically acclaimed actor.

Johnny Depp claims he is being boycotted by Hollywood

Washington [US], August 16 (ANI): Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, who lost a libel case last year over an article that called him a ‘wife-beater’, claimed that he is being boycotted by the industry.

According to Variety, in a recent interaction with The Sunday Times, the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star talked about the behaviour of the members of Hollywood towards him and the status of his film ‘Minamata’ in the US.
“Some films touch people and this affects those in ‘Minamata’ and people who experience similar things…And for anything … for Hollywood’s boycott of me? One man, one actor in an unpleasant and messy situation, over the last number of years?” he said.

For the unversed, last year, Depp lost a libel case against British tabloid The Sun, which referred to the actor as a ‘wife beater’ in an article about him and his ex-wife Amber Heard. The court ruled that the paper proved the content of its article to be ‘substantially true’ and the judge found that 12 of the 14 alleged incidents of domestic violence had occurred. Depp also lost a bid to overturn the High Court ruling in March this year.

After the case, the actor was dropped by Warner Bros. from its ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise and was replaced with Mads Mikkelsen in the role of evil wizard Grindelwald.

Despite being surrounded by controversies, Depp has not lost hope.

“Moving towards where I need to go to make all that… to bring things to light,” he added.

Coming back to his movie ‘Minamata’, actually, it had an international premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February but has not yet been released for American audiences.

Cannes Documentary On Cinema Evolution Cites Five Indian films

Five Indian films, all made in Mumbai but disparate in spirit and substance, feature in Belfast-born, Edinburgh-based filmmaker and critic Mark Cousins’ stimulating 160-minute documentary, ‘The Story of Film: A New Generation’.

Made during the pandemic and studded with memorable movie moments, the documentary had its world premiere on the opening day of the 74th Cannes Film Festival as if to tell the world that cinema is, and will always be, alive, no matter what adversity it faces.

‘The Story of Film: A New Generation’, a part of the Cannes Classics section, opens with a shot of the new cinematheque in Madrid, a symbol of hope and renewal for diehard lovers of a medium that is nothing if not dynamic.

‘A New Generation’, a follow-up to Cousins’ 15-hour magnum opus ‘The Story of Film: An Odyssey’ (2011), tracks the creative innovations, technological advancements, and new ways of seeing in an image-intensive, attention-deficient digital age.

Besides covering the last decade of American and European cinema, it focuses extensively on Asian and Arab films. It also touches upon the pandemic, too, and ruminates on its repercussions: lockdowns, face masks, and social distancing.

The riveting, thought-provoking overview of ‘the new millennium of movies’ cites Anurag Kashyap’s five-hour ‘Gangs of Wasseypur‘, Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘PK‘, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Goliyon ki Rasleela Ram-Leela‘, Anand Gandhi’s ‘Ship of Theseus’ and Anand Patwardhan’s brilliant documentary ‘Reason’ among the most important films of the current era.

‘A New Generation’ is written, photographed, and narrated by Cousins. It covers a dizzying array of films and probes the evolution of the key movie genres, the extensions of film language, the centrality of faces in cinema, the explosion of streaming platforms and communication devices, and the advent of performance capture and de-aging tools.

Beginning with ‘Joker’ and ‘Frozen’, it encompasses a diverse range of films – from ‘Cemetery of Splendour’, ‘Parasite’ and ‘Shoplifters’ to ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Midsommar’, and from ‘Norte, the End of History’, ‘Holy Motors’ and ‘An Elephant Sitting Still to Hustlers’, ‘Gravity’ and ‘Baby Driver’- to capture the methods and directions of 21st-century cinema.

Cousins sees ‘Gangs of Wasseypur‘ as “one of the most complex” gangster films in the 80 years since the birth of the genre. A “most elaborately choreographed song” from ‘Ram-Leela’ featuring Ranveer Singh figures in the film.

The documentarian, whose credits include ‘Women Make Film’ (2018) and ‘The Eyes of Orson Welles’, also notes “the colours… and musical energy” of another Bollywood number, this one from ‘PK’, with Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt.

The filmmaker describes a “tonal shift” in PK as “one of the biggest… in contemporary cinema”. He regards ‘Reason’ as one of the most significant documentary films of our times and identifies a “moment” in Patwardhan’s film as “one of the bravest… in recent cinema”.

‘Ship of Theseus’, with its theme of ailment, healing, and renewal, is held up as a cinematic exemplar of the transitions that mankind is witnessing today as it sits on the cusp of a process that could change it beyond recognition.

Cousins makes a special mention of films that point a finger at our inhumanity and our refusal to learn the lessons of history.

Cousins has another film in Cannes Classics this year – ‘The Storms of Jeremy Thomas’, a documentary on the prolific British producer who has over the past five decades collaborated with a few of the world’s greatest filmmakers, notably Bernardo Bertolucci, Nagisa Oshima, Wim Wenders, Lars von Trier, and David Cronenberg.

Gigi Hadid Asks Media And Paparazzi To Blur The Face Of Her Newborn Daughter Khai

Supermodel Gigi Hadid took to her social media today and penned down a lengthy note asking the media, paparazzi and fanclubs to blur the face of her and Zayn Malik’s newborn daughter, Khai from images ‘if and when she is caught on camera’.

Sharing her ‘letter from a Mamma’, Gigi said that she has now realised that she can’t protect Khai from everything and wrote, “As our baby grows up we have to realize that we can’t protect her from everything the way we wanted to and could when she was smaller. She loves seeing the world! and although she gets a lot of that out near the farm, she also gets to experience other places- a true blessing. On our most recent visits to New York, she has started to want her sun shade lifted up (something she is used to at home) and helps herself to it! She doesn’t understand why she’s covered in the city, or what I’ve wanted to protect her from. I also want her to see the most amazing city in the world + the beautiful and diverse people that walk down the streets of NYC … that is, without the stress of the media circus that comes with parents who are public figures.”

She further added, “I know the laws change State to State, and I’ve seen some paparazzi photos of kids in NYC with their faces blurred – but, from asking around, I believe that that comes down to the integrity of the photographer, publications, or fans sharing the images. I write this all to say: to the Paparazzi, press, and beloved fan accounts, you know we have never intentionally shared our daughters face on social media. Our wish is that she can choose how to share herself with the world when she comes of age, and that she can live as normal of a childhood as possible, without worrying about a public image that she has not chosen”.

Wishing ‘the best’ for her daughter, Gigi continued, “It would mean the world to us, as we take our daughter to see and explore NYC and the world, if you would PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE blur her face out of the images, if and when she is caught on camera. I know it’s an extra effort- but as a new mom, I just want the best for my baby, as all parents do… and I hope this can continue the conversation to protect minors in the media, even if they come from a public family.”

“I would like to send a huge ‘Thank You’ to those paparazzi who have been so respectful, since I asked them to keep a distance while I walked with the stroller, since my first trip to NYC with Khai. I see you and I appreciate it. For the child, I can imagine that close or dramatic paparazzi frenzies must be overwhelming and disorienting… it still is an adult that understands and deals with it often. I appreciate you taking the time to read this and hope you can understand where I’m coming from. With love, G” she signed off.

Gigi Hadidi and her long-term boyfriend-singer Zayn Malik were blessed with a daughter in September 2020. The couple later named their daughter Khai and Zayn announced on social media, “Our baby girl is here, healthy and beautiful to try put into words how i am feeling right now would be an impossible task. The love I feel for this tiny human is beyond my understanding. Grateful to know her, proud to call her mine, and thankful for the life we will have together x.”
