Actor Ishaan Khatter, who is currently shooting for the war drama ‘Pippa’, shared his greetings for a “proud and happy” 50th Garibpur Day on Sunday.

For the unversed, ‘Pippa’ is a heroic tank battle film that underscores the bravery of Brigadier Mehta, a veteran of the 45th Cavalry tank squadron, who fought on the eastern front during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, which led to the liberation of India’s neighbour Bangladesh. Shraddha Srinath To Play Lead Role In Yuvaraj Dhayalan’s Film

Earlier in August, there were reports of Nayanthara acting in an upcoming film directed by Yuvaraj Dhayalan, who has previously made films like Potta Potti, Tenaliraman and Eli. But now, we hear Nayanthara has opted out of the film citing date issues.

A source tells us, “Nayanthara will not be part of this project because of the delay in her Bollywood debut, in which she is acting opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Nayanthara had to majorly reshuffle her dates because of the delay that happened in Shah Rukh’s film, which is being directed by Atlee. The makers of Yuvaraj’s untitled film had already shot some portions that did not involve the actress some time ago and were waiting for the actress to complete her schedule of the Bollywood film. Now, they want to go back on floors soon, but the actress is still tied up with the Hindi film. So, they have gone ahead and opted for another actress to play the lead role now that Nayanthara isn’t able to accommodate her dates for this project.”

When we reached out to the film’s producer, SR Prabhu, to confirm this development, he admitted that it was true. “Sharddha Srinath will now be playing the lead role in this drama involving three couples,” he revealed.

Nushrratt Bharuccha Opens Up About ‘Chhalaang’ As Film Clocks One Year

As Hansal Mehta directorial ‘Chhalaang’ clocked a year since its release on Saturday, actor Nushrratt Bharuccha recalled her experience of playing the role of a small-town girl in the film.

In the film, she played the role of a Haryanvi teacher and received much appreciation for her performance. Recalling her experience, Nushrratt shared, “As an actor, I have always aspired to bring to the table, something that is completely new and exciting. Having tried my hands in quirky comedy genres earlier, with ‘Chhalaang’ I wanted to break the conventional mould and try something different and deliver my best at it.”

She further appreciated her director Hansal Mehta and co-star Rajkummar Rao, who played the role of a sports teacher.

“Thanks to Hansal Mehta Sir for guiding me on set and nurturing me as an actor and ofcourse Rajkummar for being such a wonderful co-star, it’s always fun to work with him,” she added.

Nushrratt recently also bagged a nomination at the Busan International Film Festival for the best actress award for her role in the anthology film ‘Ajeeb Daastaans’.

Nushrratt’s lineup currently features ‘Chhorri’, ‘Hurdang’, ‘Janhit Mein Jaari’, ‘Ram Setu’ and an unnamed project.

Srijit Mukherji Ready With Next Project ‘Sherdil’

Srijit Mukherji has finally wrapped up the shoot of his second Hindi film ‘Shabaash Mithu’, the biopic of Indian cricketer Mithali Raj. In the film, Taapsee Pannu plays the role of the Indian women’s cricket team captain.

On Tuesday, Srijit took to his social media handle to announce the wrap-up news. Sharing a post-wrap-up picture with the cast of the film he wrote, “The saga finally ends…it’s a wrap for Shabaash Mithu!”

Srijit was roped in to direct the sports biopic after filmmaker Rahul Dholakia had to quit the project because of the change in schedule. The film went on floors in Mumbai in April, but the shoot was put on hold because of the second wave of COVID-19. ‘Shabaash Mithu’ has also been shot at the iconic Lord’s cricket ground and it was a dream come true moment for Srijit.

Now, after wrapping up the Taapsee Pannu- starrer sports biopic, Srijit is ready with his next Hindi project. Titled ‘Sherdil’, the film will see Pankaj Tripathi in the lead alongside Neeraj Kabi and Sayani Gupta. If all goes according to plan, the shooting will start from November 18. According to the latest reports, the critically acclaimed director recently did a recce in North Bengal’s Gorumara National Park and ‘Sherdil’ is likely to be shot there.

Srijit’s film ‘Sherdil’ was announced in 2019 and the shooting was supposed to start in 2020 but due to the pandemic it got stalled. The plot focuses on the man-nature conflict against the backdrop of a jungle. Giving a peek into the film’s story, Srijit had earlier said: “When I read about the bizarre trend that villages bordering the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve were sending older members into the forest so they would fall prey to the tigers, it baffled me. Villagers are entitled to compensation if their relatives die in the reserve forest. And to many families, this seemed like an easy way to earn money. The whole incident made me think about how inhuman some people can be. The story I’ve carved out of the incident is, however, on heroism. It revolves around Gangaram, the chief of a village, who voluntarily goes into the forest to save his poverty-stricken family. What happens when he goes into the forest is what the film is all about. This is my dream project and I will go all out to make it happen.”

Razneesh Ghai To Develop A Film On Battle Of Rezang La

After working on Kangana Ranaut-starrer action film ‘Dhaakad’, filmmaker Razneesh ‘Razy’ Ghai is now all set to come up with a film on the Battle of Rezang La.

For the unversed, on November 18, 1962, in the Battle of Rezang La, soldiers of the 13th battalion of the Kumaon Regiment put up a valiant fight against the 5,000-strong Chinese military troops in the 1962 Indo-China war, preventing a possible occupation of the entire Ladakh region. Ghai will most probably start the pre-production of the film early next year.

Excited to work on the war project, he said, “The kind of world we are living in right now, the audience wants so much more from content creators. Films have to match global scale. As creators, we have to step up and produce content that makes everyone stop and take notice. This story is just that and the film by design will be one of the most exciting war movies to be made in India.”

He added, “With this, we want to push boundaries and we will put in our best in making that happen. This is a classic underdog story. The bone-chilling details of the battle lend to it the sentimentality of a wonderful patriotic film.”

Co-producing the film with Ghai is Sohel Maklai, who is also one of the producers of ‘Dhaakad’.

Kamal Haasan To Join Hands With Pa Ranjith For Their Next

Kamal Haasan recently celebrated his 67th birthday, and social media is still flooding with birthday wishes for the legendary actor. Like many others, Pa Ranjith recently met Kamal Haasan at his office and wished the star on his birthday. During the meet, they have also reportedly discussed joining hands for a film, and reportedly the actor has also liked the director’s story idea and has asked the director to develop the full script.

Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan is working for ‘Vikram’ with Lokesh Kanagaraj, and the film has crossed half the stages. Kamal Haasan will be teaming up with Mahesh Narayanan for a film on a story written by himself. Moreover, Kamal Haasan will also be finishing the work for ‘Indian 2’ with Shankar, and the film is set to resume soon. After which Kamal Haasan will be teaming up with Pa Ranjith. Hence the director has more time to develop the film.

If Pa Ranjith teams up with Kamal Haasan, then he will join the list of directors to direct both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.

We are able to see that this is a novel idea and if told right, the film will get cinephiles from across the globe discussing it. I can’t wait to start the film.”

As per a statement, the new project is a relationship drama, which will most probably go on floors by mid next year.

Sinha also expressed his happiness on collaborating with Mishra on the particular yet-to-be-titled project.

“As a producer, my hunt is always to find fresh ideas that push the envelope. Sudhir bhai brings to each piece of cinema his distinct voice that makes the film so unique. I am extremely keen to start the project and we soon get into pre-production,” he said.

Speaking of the cast, currently, Polish, Korean, Japanese and Swedish talents are being reached out to by the production house.

Dybbuk Movie Review: Film Is A Comprehensive Waste Of Time

Director: Jay K

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Nikita Dutta, Manav Kaul, Gaurav Sharma, Denzil Smith

Dybbuk has an interesting line of cast that includes Emraan Hashmi and Manav Kaul, but the film, now out on Amazon Prime Video, has too many convenient points that make it somewhat of an implausibility. Helmed by Jay K, he has remade his debut Malayalam movie, Ezra (with Prithviraj), in Hindi as Dybbuk. Hashmi as Sam or Samuel reprises Prithviraj’s role, and does a decent job of a man who gets a new posting in a nuclear waste disposable plant in – believe it or not – the Mauritius capital of Port Louis. His wife, Maahi (Nikita Dutta), is not too keen to translocate, because that would mean going far away from her parents. But she plays a sport and accompanies Sam to a really scenic city that sadly harbours a demonic spirit inside a Jewish wine box. It can emerge for its run of death and destruction only after the last of the Jews dies on the island, and Sam’s transfer coincides with the death of a rabbi, the last of the tribe there.

But for some above average performances, Jay’s work looks like yet another horror story of red-eyed ghosts descending from roofs, rocking chairs, cracking mirrors and flickering lights. And the atmosphere gets eerie at the colonial bungalow in which the couple decide to live. I sometimes wonder why writers and directors do not think of something different to frighten viewers instead of beating the same old drum of jump-scares. These shake and shock you momentarily, but beyond this, they merely produce yawns.

Dybbuk is an ancient Jewish custom which was written in the 16th century, but was ignored by scholars till S. Ansky’s play (The Dybbuk)in 1914 popularised it in literary circles. About a form of transmigration of a restless/unhappy soul, the film narrates this through rather clumsy writing. With a local Muslim police inspector, Riaz (Gaurav Sharma), a Catholic priest (Denzil Smith), a Jewish Rabbi, Markus (Manav Kaul), a Hindu woman, Maahi, and her Christian husband, Sam, Dybbuk seems like a cocktail of religions out to bring about societal transformation and harmony. It does not quite achieve that; instead it appears forced and confused with a story that resembles a fairytale with a wicked spirit and all the good men around her.

It is not just this, but we also learn as the movie progresses that there is revenge and retribution to the extent that a nuclear catastrophe is waiting to wipe out the scenic vacation island of Mauritius. That will be terrible.

Unfortunately, Dybbuk offers little novelty, falling back on a plot that has been beaten to pulp.

We had earlier in 2019 reported that actor Suriya is all set to team up with acclaimed filmmaker Bala once again. Now, the star actor himself has officially announced that he will be working with director Bala in a film.

Interestingly, this upcoming movie will mark the third collaboration between Suriya and Bala. Sharing a picture with his father Sivakumar and director Bala, Suriya wrote in Tamil, which translates to, “He who has more faith in me than me. Prajwal Devaraj: Lohith Has His Own Ways Of Conceiving The Film

Prajwal Devaraj’s upcoming film ‘Mafia’ got into a bit of a tangle recently when the producers were compelled to bring in a new director to take over. The action-drama was originally meant to be directed by Gurudatha Ganiga (of ‘Ambi Ning Vayassaytho’ fame) who chose to exit the project over certain creative differences with the producer. Soon after, Lohith H of ‘Mummy’ fame was brought in to helm the film and begin the proceedings with a clean slate.

Speaking about the change in control and how the film too evolved because of the same, Prajwal Devaraj says “Although Gurudatha came up with the idea and also wrote the script, Lohith brought in his own perspective and carried out research on the side to change things up considerably. So, in a way, they both have contributed to the script. Also, Lohith has his own ways of thinking and conceiving the film so it has changed accordingly – it’s his first commercial flick, so to speak, and he is kicked up proving himself in this space too. So, it looks exciting now”.

And research proves to be paramount for the film which is about a kind of mafia or a nexus that many aren’t aware of. “Many are aware of the drug mafia or stuff like human trafficking but there are many more that are niche and not commonly known to the public. ‘Mafia’ is about one such lesser-known cliques and I play an inspector who is hellbent on apprehending them. It’s just he, the inspector, has his own ways of doing things and that forms the crux of the story – Lohith has managed to introduce his own elements into the story based on some extensive research,” adds Prajwal.

DC Comics and Warner Bros. held their second annual Fandome on Saturday, revealing new trailers for movies and shows coming up, including The Batman, The Flash, and Black Adam. We also got a look at the story trailer for the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League game. Here’s a look at some of the biggest news that dropped.

We got a second trailer for The Batman, at last (and FanDome saved the reveal for the very end of the day). We’re not even sure if he thinks he is a hero, but Pattison’s Batman is definitely going Through Some Stuff. We didn’t learn a heck of a lot more about the characters in Matt Reeves’ interpretation of the Dark Knight’s saga. But the trailer showed off a Selina Kyle/Catwoman who seemed to be a master of disguises, and a Riddler with a much scarier vibe than we’ve seen in previous iterations. After several pandemic-related delays, The Batman comes to theaters on March 4th, 2022.

The Batman' trailer: The Ridder, Catwoman, and 4 more characters, explained

Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam has been in development for years, but the long-gestating film is finally almost here, and has a teaser trailer showing off not just Johnson’s characterbut also several members of the Justice Society of America who’ll be making their debuts. Johnson himself made an appearance at FanDome and said he was “born to play Black Adam,” before introducing a scene from the movie, which saw some archeologists (who should know better, frankly) hit Black Adam with a blast of electricity. In return, he disintegrates one guy, catches a bullet out of thin air, and then levitates away.

Black Adam hits theaters on July 29th, 2022

Black Adam' Teaser: First Look Of Dwayne Johnson's Upcoming DC Film Unveiled; Watch

Announced at last year’s FanDome and the first game from Rocksteady Studios, the team behind the beloved Batman: Arkham in nearly six years, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League showed off a new trailer at this year’s event. The game is set to debut on Xbox Series X / S, PlayStation 5, and PC in 2022.

It’s not just Marvel dabbling in the multiverse these days: the long-delayed The Flash is got a sneak peak at FanDome, bringing not just Ezra Miller’s superfast hero, but also the return of both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s versions of Batman. Keaton does the voice-over for the teaser which includes a glimpse of the unmistakable Batman cowl at the end. It’s scheduled to hit theaters November 4th, 2022.

Ezra Miller to play 'The Flash' in movie slated for Nov 2022 release

Neither Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom or Shazam!: Fury of the Gods were quite ready for primetime, but DC did show off some early behind the scenes looks at both sequels, which will continue the adventures of Jason Momoa’s muscle-bound aquatic hero and Zachary Levi / Asher Angel’s Shazam.

John Cena’s Peacemaker character — introduced in the summer’s The Suicide Squad — is getting his own HBO Max show, where he’ll try to bring peace to the world (no matter how much violence it takes.) The first trailer shows that writer and director James Gunn isn’t letting up on the unique blend of violent comedy from the film, and Cena is surprisingly appealing and funny in the teaser. Oh and also he gets a hug from an eagle which is as silly/awesome as it sounds.

Peacemaker debuts on HBO Max on January 13th.

Michael Caine Announces Retirement From Acting; Says Film ‘Best Sellers’ Will Be His Last

Sir Michael Caine is taking his final bow! The two-time Academy Award winner has announced that his new film ‘Best Sellers’ will be his last.

As per People magazine, the 88-year-old actor announced his retirement from acting on Friday on the BBC Radio show Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review, following what will be his final onscreen appearance in ‘Best Sellers’. “Funnily enough, it has turned out to be what is my last part, really,” he explained.
The veteran star added, “Because I haven’t worked for two years, and I have a spine problem, which affects my legs. So, I can’t walk very well.”

“And I also wrote a book, a couple of books, which were published and were successful. So, I’m now not an actor, I’m a writer, which is lovely because as an actor, you have to get up at half-past 6 in the morning and go to the studio. As a writer, you can start writing without leaving the bed,” Caine further said.

He stars in ‘Best Sellers’ as famed cantankerous writer Harris Shaw, who reluctantly agrees to go on a tour promoting his first book in decades, after his publisher Lucy Stanbridge (Aubrey Plaza) tracks him down to help save her late father’s publishing house.

The film, which was shot in Montreal in 2019, also stars Scott Speedman, Cary Elwes and Ellen Wong.
“I think it would be my last role,” Caine confirmed.

The star added, “There haven’t been any offers, obviously, for two years, because nobody’s been making any movies I want to do. But also, I’m 88. There aren’t exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man who’s 88.”

Caine made his breakout performance in the 1964 war film ‘Zulu’, before going on to star in such films as ‘Alfie’ (1966), ‘The Italian Job’ (1969), ‘Get Carter’ (1971) and ‘The Man Who Would Be King’ (1975).

With two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes under his belt, he’s enjoyed a steady amount of work, most recently starring in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ and the Charles Dickens reimagining ‘Twist’.
‘The Dressed to Kill’ actor has also written six books since 1984, with his most recent being ‘Blowing the Bloody Doors Off: And Other Lessons in Life’, published through Hachette Book Group in 2018.

Sardar Udham Review: Film That Can Light The Revolutionary Fire In You

Sardar Udham movie cast: Vicky Kaushal, Stephen Hogan, Shaun Scott, Kirsty Averton, Andrew Havill, Banita Sandhu, Amol Parashar

Sardar Udham movie director: Shoojit Sircar

Movie streaming on Amazon Prime Video

Story: The film pays tribute to an unsung hero — Sardar Udham Singh (Vicky Kaushal), an Indian revolutionary, who assassinated Michael O’Dwyer in London (in 1940), to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre (of 1919). The former British colonial official was the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab (British India) at the time. Dwyer had said the killing of hundreds of protesters during a demonstration at Jallianwala Bagh in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, was justified.

Review: First things first — If you are looking for a talky film that can light the revolutionary fire in you, ‘Sardar Udham’ isn’t it. Do not expect hard-hitting dialoguebaazi or emotional outbursts. The pre-independence drama based on true events, is a simmering observation of a man consumed by grief. The protagonist makes numbing pain his strength and silence, his voice. Loss and despair are so overpowering that avenging the barbaric crime he witnessed in his 20’s, becomes the only reason for his existence, even 20 years later.

Set at the onset of World War II, the film shuttles between past and present. The canvas is massive but meaty source material on the titular character, meagre. None of Udham’s chest-thumping slogans or writings (if any) was found. Here was a man, deeply scarred, who went about doing his job quietly. The challenge was to then connect the dots with whatever little information available and get into his psyche. Shoojit tries to decode the ‘why’ and not just how he ended up doing what he did. The aim is to understand the emotional arc of an innocent boy from Amristar who wouldn’t hold a gun, let alone firing one. What led him to fire at Dwyer from point-blank range and not flee the spot? Was it driven by revenge? Why harbour the pain for two decades and not move on for good? Why is the same person a revolutionary and terrorist for different people?

Shoojit (Piku, Vicky Donor) doesn’t take a myopic look at heroism or freedom. His hero doesn’t seem invincible or hero-like. Udham didn’t hate a man or his country who spurred the massacre. His fight was against the British ideology of conquering others’ right to speak and live freely. Through an exhausting runtime of 2 hours, 40 minutes, Shoojit makes us meet Udham, a stoical man on a mission. He moves like a shadow, relentless in his pursuit of Dwyer and freedom from the oppressive British rule. For the longest time, we solely become a spectator of his painstaking journey. We don’t feel invested enough. We see him landing odd jobs in London and being the centre of various unremarkable events leading up to the assassination.

As much as we anticipate the volcano of his past to erupt eventually, the road to that heart-wrenching climax is tedious. Underplaying is an effective tool as long as it doesn’t underwhelm. This film is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode but beware; the wait tries your patience. The intention is to give a lull before the storm treatment to storytelling. Silence is amplified so when Udham’s inner turmoil finds an outlet, the impact reaches a crescendo. It’s cleverly thought out but the execution yields mixed results. The non-linear, non-verbose narrative struggles to hold your attention even an hour into the movie. The re-enactment of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre is unsettling to watch and that is the very reason why this story needed to be told.

Vicky Kaushal as Sardar Udham dips his toes into uncharted waters. He tries his best to get unspoken words across but a film like this needed an Irrfan to speak through his eyes. You can trust a seasoned actor to elevate portions that demand stillness. Vicky is remarkable in certain scenes though. A drunk scene in particular, his 20 something portrayal and his climactic conversation with a British investigator extract the best out of him as an actor. Him wondering, “Mere jawani ka koi matlab bana?” is heart-breaking. The writing tries to avoid clichés but ends up sounding contemporary instead. Bhagat Singh’s Hinglish dialogues like, “Hum sirf exploitation ke against hai. Humein semi-independence nahi chahiye,” sound out of place given the setting. The line that stays with you is Udham reminiscing his turbulent past and asking a British officer, “What were you doing when you were 23?”

Sardar Udham’s courage never roared. It whispered. This freedom fighter traversed continents, used aliases and lied low throughout his life. He was too possessed by his singular quest for equality to make a noise. If you are as passionately curious about his quiet existence, this film is for you.

Filmmaker Kireet Khurana Comes Up With New Documentary ‘The Invisible Visible’

Filmmaker Kireet Khurana is all set to come up with a new documentary titled ‘The Invisible Visible’.

Shot across Mumbai, Delhi, Patna, Dehradun, Kanpur, and a few villages in Maharashtra and Bihar, ‘The Invisible Visible’ highlights the plight of India’s destitute millions. Speaking about the same, Kireet said, “India has the largest number of homeless people. It has over 70 million destitute citizens who have been denied their Constitutional right to shelter. The draconian Bombay Beggary Prevention Act 1959 has further criminalized them and made them vulnerable to incarceration, torture, and dehumanization. The film delineates how the marginalized and the disenfranchised have been left out in the cold and in some cases, exploited in shelters under the watch of the state, as happened during the infamous Muzaffarpur case, where hundreds of girls between 6 and 15 were raped, tortured and killed.”

Kireet also hopes that the film will serve as a catalyst for states to set up shelters for the homeless in each district and have independent and credible agencies to audit them regularly.

The 81-minute long documentary will be released in mid-2022.

Hrithik Roshan Opens Up About ‘WAR’ As Film Clocks 2 Years

Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan, who bowled audiences over with his action entertainer ‘WAR’, opened up about the film as it clocked two years today.

‘WAR’, which also starred Tiger Shroff and Vaani Kapoor, was directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra. The visual spectacle became an all-time blockbuster in the history of Indian cinema and Hrithik made the country drool over him with his effortless charm and mastery over breath-taking action sequences.

On the film’s second anniversary, the actor revealed his first reaction to the movie’s script.

He said, “Well, it’s complicated. When I read the script I didn’t see anything in it that excited me. It was too frivolous and superficial. And I was into ‘real’ cinema like Super 30 at the time. On hearing my reaction both Sid and Adi rushed to my house and it took 5 mins worth of reframing for me to GET the film. Adi said look at it as an entertainer like Dhoom: 2.”

The actor added, “And then we sat and went through the entire script AGAIN and I thoroughly enjoyed it. And also realized my folly. Sometimes, it’s important to GET how the director wants to interpret the script. And having done Bang Bang with Sid, I could trust in what they were saying.”

He also spoke about his character Kabir from the film and said, “I saw it as an opportunity for me to try and bring in weight and depth into the film with Kabir’s character which is otherwise not seen in such movies. That aspect really excited me. I think the best way to make movies which are ‘not so deep’ is to have characters who are really, really deep. It’s fun then.”

The ‘Lakshya’ star credited Aditya Chopra and Siddharth Anand for their vision to create the hit action entertainer.

He said, “I think it’s safe to say that it was the spectacular vision of Sid Anand and Adi Chopra as filmmakers who made it what it is today. As a contributor, I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of War and the response it received only encourages me to follow my gut and work with my whole heart and soul.”
Hrithik has always set new benchmarks for himself and the Indian film industry with his body of work.

‘WAR’ too set benchmarks in action, dance, scale.

Ask him what makes him a genre-pushing actor and he said, “Personally, I’m an adventure junkie and that somewhere spills over to the work I do and the people I associate with. Professionally, I’ve always seen acting as living through the varied stories and onscreen characters I have been lucky to be a part of. My choice of films have been instinctive, I enjoy exploring and immersing myself with different psychologies, personas and experiences.”

Hrithik added, “The exercise only broadens myself as a human being, makes me more sensitive to my surroundings and people. Every film has shaped me as a being, the journey has been one of learnings and unlearnings – both of which I truly cherish.”

“Yes, there were risks and venturing in unknown waters can be challenging but with it was the thrill. The absolute adrenaline rush I feel with doing things that are new for me. I do not set out to set a precedent for anyone, but myself. That’s what keeps me going,” he further said.

The film turned out to be the biggest blockbuster of 2019 with collections of over Rs 300 crore at the domestic box office.

Shiddat Movie Review: Mohit Raina, Sunny Kaushal Carries This Film

Director: Kunal Deshmukh

Cast: Radhika Madan, Sunny Kaushal, Diana Penty, Mohit Raina

Shiddat, streaming on Disney+Hotstar

Sometimes, in the pursuit of true love, a life time can be too little. We spend almost two-and-a-half hours with Jaggi (Sunny Kaushal), Kartika (Radhika Madan) Gautam (Mohit Raina) and Ira (Diana Penty), and it seems endless, simply because after a nice start, the film goes downhill shockingly rapidly. And it decides to stay there.

Jaggi is a happy-go-lucky hockey player for Punjab. He along with his friends gatecrashes a wedding reception where he gets inspired by Gautam’s philosophy of love of going to any lengths and decides to follow it. At the sports complex, he meets Kartika who is a swimmer. While the two initially don’t get along together, over a period of time both get attracted. While Kartika wins the swimming competition, Jaggi ends up getting heartbroken as he comes to know that the love of his life is getting married to someone else in the United Kingdom. Kartika leaves for London and Jaggi decides to go after her, break her wedding and spend life with her.

Great film romances have the power to make a cynical viewer believe and become so invested in the characters on screen as to yearn for their union. Shiddat somewhere does it but gets lost in its convoluted plot. The film would have still made the cut had director Kunal Deshmukh not stretched the plot beyond a point and not created a melodrama. He manages to exude a likeable chemistry between Sunny and Radhika – they look comfortable with each other even in the most awkward scenes.

There are some impractical situations that are really questionable. How do you justify the guy’s decision to swim through the English Channel between Paris and England to reach a girl? And why do filmmakers see the need to glorify stalking to the extent where the girl has no option but to say yes. A particular scene shows Jaggi posting Kartika’s picture on social media without her permission. In an act of revenge, she goes inside the boy’s locker room and takes their naked photographs. It may be funny for the writers and directors but this clearly is a case of eve teasing and abuse.

Sunny Kaushal gives himself into his role. It is a delight to see him on screen. Shiddat gives enough screen time to this fabulous actor to prove his mettle. Radhika blends into her role and gives a decent performance. But it is Mohit who is outstanding in the film. His aching performance beautifully translates on screen. Diana, in her limited screen time, makes her presence felt.

The fact that the film doesn’t lose its core message, that of love, is one of its few redeemable factors. Without giving away any spoilers, the climax leaves you with a big twist but unfortunately by that time, it becomes too late to bother about it. Despite its rousing moments, the film leaves you feeling unfulfilled.

We are very happy to continue to fulfill that pledge by supporting this new film from Noah Hawley and Rege-Jean Page.”

Sharwanand Ends The ‘No-Kiss’ Policy In His Latest Film ‘Maha Samudram’

Sharwanand is one of the talented actors in Tollywood today. He never does romance and lip-locks on screen. But, some heroes of his age went beyond lip locks in films. Sharwanand reportedly decided to not do such things on-screen after doing it with Priya Anand in ‘Ko Ante Koti’, which was co-produced by himself.

He was the first choice for the director to play a lead in ‘Arjun Reddy’, but the actor denied it due to romantic sequences, rude behavior of the lead actor, and his violence towards women.

Even in his film ‘Padi Padi Leche Manasu’, he only kissed Sai Pallavi on her cheeks. But in his latest film ‘Maha Samudram’, he seems to have broken the rules all by himself.

The trailer shows the intense romance between him and Anu Emmanuel in the film. Siddharth’s romance seems to be completely on another level in the upcoming movie. With this intense romance of both heroes, the ‘Maha Samudram’ trailer is trending top on YouTube with record no. of views. It has fetched more than 5 million views in no time with over 170k likes. By far, this is the most-watched trailer in 24 hours for Sharwanand. The makers have taken to Twitter to announce the same.

Also starring Jagapathi Babu, Rao Ramesh, and KGF Raju, Maha Samudram is slated to hit the screens on October 14 this year. Anil Sunkara has bankrolled the project under the banner of AK Entertainments.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Hill and Barris co-wrote the script and are producing via the latter’s Khalabo Ink Society banner, with Hill through his Strong Baby shingle. Also producing is Kevin Misher of Misher Films. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is said to be an incisive examination of modern love and family dynamics and how clashing cultures, societal expectations and generational differences shape and affect relationships.

Murphy and Hill will find themselves on opposite sides of some of those divides. Louis-Dreyfus will play Hill’s mother.

Barris is making his feature directorial debut with the project, which is being executive produced by Mychelle Deschamps and Hale Rothstein for Khalabo Ink Society, Strong Baby’s Matt Dines and Ali Goodwin, and Andy Berman of Misher Films. Tahir Raj Bhasin Opens Up About ‘Manto’ As Film Clocks 3 Years

Actor Tahir Raj Bhasin, who made his Bollywood debut with ‘Mardaani’, recently opened up about the 2018 movie ‘Manto’ as it clocked three years today.

In ‘Manto’, helmed by Nandita Das, Tahir made a bold career move to depart from typical commercial cinema. He was refreshing in the film, which was India’s selection at the Cannes film festival. On the third release anniversary of the critically-acclaimed drama on author Saadat Hasan Manto’s life, Tahir said, “Working with Nawazuddin Siddique on Manto was a live masterclass. Shyam Chadha, the 1950’s film star (Tahir’s character in the film), and Manto were a real-life duo who had epic adventures with the backdrop of 50’s Bombay cinema.”

He added, “Translating this friendship on-screen meant doing a range of scenes from a brotherly bond to a drastic conflict and a sudden parting of ways. To explore all of these shades with a co-star like Nawaz was a super treat. His timing, sense of humour and humility are things that I imbibed while shooting Manto.”

Tahir also spoke about the director of the film and how he felt walking the red carpet, representing India at Cannes.

The actor said, “Nandita Das is a director with impeccable taste and this shows in the films she creates. She brought out a nuanced performance from me which wouldn’t have been possible were it not for her eye for detail.”

He added, “The film’s journey was supersonic. We transitioned from shooting in the villages of Gujarat to the Red Carpet at Cannes within a year. Walking the red carpet, representing India at Cannes, interacting with the international press and the festival jury for Manto was surreal. To experience this with two of Indian cinema’s tycoons Nawaz and Nandita at Cannes, was the icing on the cake.”

Tahir also revealed why he chose ‘Manto’ after nailing the role of a baddie on-screen with ‘Mardaani’ and ‘Force 2’.

He said, “Manto for me was the chance to work shoulder to shoulder with Nawazuddin Siddique. Like in sport, in acting too your game in a pairing is only as good as your co-star. To work with Nawaz was a great challenge and meant diving into the deep end and exploring the many layers in the friendship between the 50’s film star Shyam Chaddha and Manto.”

The actor will now be seen in ‘Looop Lapeta’ as a romantic lead opposite Taapsee Pannu and in ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein’, in which he has been paired with Shweta Tripathi.

Tahir will also play the role of Sunil Gavaskar in Kabir Khan’s ’83’, co-starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone.

Priya Anand Plays Nisha Gayakwad In Chethan’s Upcoming Film

Priya Anand’s birthday. Priya Anand, as many would already know, plays the female lead in ‘James’ and the makers took the opportunity to also unveil the name of her character in the film through the poster – Priya Anand plays Nisha Gayakwad in Chetan Kumar’s ( Chethan Ahimsa) upcoming action entertainer.

This would be Priya’s second outing in Kannada cinema after having made her debut opposite Puneeth Rajkumar in Santhosh Ananddram’s ‘Raajakumaara’ in 2017. The on-screen pair went on to garner a lot of love and adoration from the fans, and with the two returning to collaborate once again on ‘James’, the excitement is certainly huge at the moment.

The makers had to endure a considerable delay in production due to the pandemic but were eventually able to get back on floors a few weeks ago, post the relaxation. Having begun the new schedule with an intense action sequence, the whole team is now sparing no effort in wrapping production at the earliest. The first official poster of James was unveiled on the 15th of August. Kishore Pathikonda has bankrolled the project.

The makers have also roped in veteran Tamil actor Sarath Kumar to play the film’s antagonist. Alongside, the principal cast also includes Anu Prabhakar, Meka Srikanth, Adithya Menon, Padmaja Rao, and others. Popular small screen personality Shine Shetty too was roped in very recently to play a key role in the film.

Nishvika Naidu Hints At Working With Darling Krishna On Her Next

Online AMA, or “Ask Me Anything”, sessions have proven to be quite the fun exercises for celebs wherein they get to interact with their fans in some cool and harmless ways. And actor Nishvika Naidu signed up for one such session with her social media followers earlier today and was seen bonding with them over some interesting questions about work and everyday life. In the same vein came an inquiry about her upcoming film projects, and while Nishvika refrained from revealing much, she did drop an exciting hint for her all fans out there.

When asked about her next movie, Nishvika shared that there is, indeed, some really exciting news withheld and that she will be revealing more soon. However, the actor was gracious enough to also drop a really cool hint to suggest that she will be working alongside Darling Krishna on her next but one would have to wait till the right time to know more.

Thailaivii Movie Review: This Film Pays A Resounding Ode To Jaya-MGR’s Poignant Love Story

Critic’s Rating: 3.5/5

STORY: The film chronicles the life of actor-turned-politician Jayalalithaa (Kangana Ranaut), her relationship with the legendary M. G. Ramachandran (Arvind Swami) and her tumultuous rise to power as the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

REVIEW: An iconic figure in Indian politics, Jayalalithaa’s political journey is known to most. Director Vijay attempts to unravel her icy cold persona and look at her as a woman passionately driven by love. Make no mistake, a woman’s fight for self respect and battle against patriarchy are integral to the story. However, what lies at the heart of the tale is her unconditional love for MGR, despite the societal contempt of her. She faced the wrath of his loyal followers, who deemed their extra marital relationship as illicit and a disgrace to his noble reputation. As days turned into decades, they became each other’s strength and weakness. Bound by the heart, the purity of their love stayed intact even as murky politics, power struggle and people got hellbent on parting the two. The scenes where they indulge in phone conversations without uttering a single word but letting their silence do the talking are heartbreaking. The film essentially works for its poignant love story.

Perceived as the ‘other woman’ in MGR’s life, who got things easy for being his blue eyed girl, Jaya had everything but respect at the beginning of her political career. Despite being cornered, slut shamed and humiliated time and again, she marches on with her head held high. Her relentless fight to earn her place in the society forms the crux of the film.

Kangana in the titular role channels her inner rebel and unflinching self assurance to make a point — she plays second fiddle to no one. A classic case of her screen character imitating her real life in a way. She renders a powerful portrayal of a lovelorn woman who keeps rising like a phoenix from the ashes. She elevates the formulaic script with quiet determination and powerful presence, cleverly not mimicking Jaya but getting the tone and nuances of her character right. As a woman scorned by people for loving fearlessly and feeling deeply, Kangana is outstanding.

The actress finds a perfect companion in Arvind Swami as MGR, her mentor, the wind beneath her wings. He brings in a certain calm to the storm that engulfs Jaya. Swami is impeccable in his mannerisms and body language. There couldn’t have been a better actor to play the Tamil screen icon and people’s leader.

A lot of dialoguebaazi and dramatic slowmo walks populate the stretchy political second half. A former ‘filmwali’ rising to power doesn’t go down too well with the men and the misogyny is conveyed in a rather theatrical & repetitive manner. Shoddy editing and a loud background score feels jarring. The execution lacks restraint and objectivity. The filmmaker takes one dimensional approach to storytelling and his observation of the lead character. Jaya is either smirked at or worshipped. There is no in between. The treatment gets reverential especially in the political portions. The chink in Jaya’s armour doesn’t find at outlet.

Dialogues are painstakingly written and hit the right note. “Mahabharat ka dusra naam jaya hai” sums up Jaya’s life perfectly. In a scene where Jaya tells her ailing mother that people only remember you when they need you, her mother righty argues, “Bina Matlab ke log bhagwaan ko bhi yaad nahi karte.” When Jaya is told that everyone reveres MGR and that she is no different, she says, “Krishna ko sab pasand karte the, phir bhi Radha ki sab mein ginti nahi hoti.” Neeta Lulla’s costumes are detailed and effective. From conical bras of the 60s and 70s to the winged eye makeup, bouffant and vintage props, the recreation of a bygone era is decent if not specific.

Thailaivii pays a resounding ode to Jaya-MGR’s poignant love story, a relationship without labels. The political aspect feels talky, half baked and one-sided. What eventually stays with you is the story of a woman who defied the odds and wrote her own destiny.

The actor, who made his Bollywood debut with ‘Vicky Donor’, became the conversation-starting star in India with ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ in which he embraced a taboo topic of erectile dysfunction. On the film’s fourth anniversary, Ayushmann thanked the project for empowering him to become the artiste that he is recognised as today.

Ayushmann said, “I debuted in Bollywood with a bold taboo subject of sperm donation in Vicky Donor, thanks to Shoojit Da, and that showed me how the audience was changing and embracing subjects that were disruptive. The actor, who was last seen in ‘Gulabo Sitabo’, said, “After Vicky Donor, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan reinstated my belief that the people of India want to discuss taboo topics out in the open and in their own way address them for the good of society. The success of the film told me to stay on course and try and bring more such themes out of the closet and into mainsteam cinema. I felt that having a discussion on these things was necessary.”

Ayushmann credited ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ for changing the course of his career.

“Shubh Mangal Saavdhan gave me the courage to pick my subsequent films and put all my faith behind it. I’m fortunate that in this process I found directors whose creative vision was so original that it blew me away. I thank everyone associated with this film for empowering me to become an artiste who relishes in sparking conversations in India. I want to do just that through my next few films like Anek, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui and Doctor G,” he said.

‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ had received an overwhelming response from the viewers and critics alike for the way it dealt with a subject like erectile dysfunction. The film, helmed by R.S. Prasanna, had released on September 1, 2017.

He was in my vanity narrating and shooting was such that I had to keep going for my take and come back to it. I wanted to hear it in one go but that’s how interesting the story was. I couldn’t stop the narration but I had to. The same day at lunch I sat for an hour and heard the whole script out. I knew from the word go that the film is great and it will be a blast working on it,” he added.

‘Bell Bottom’ Box Office Day 2: Film Made A Collection Of Rs 2.7 Crores

Actor Akshay Kumar’s highly-anticipated movie ‘Bell Bottom’ has created a lot of buzz despite its midweek release after theatres across the country have reopened with only 50% occupancy, excluding the state of Maharastra. While it recorded a good start of Rs 3 crore approximately on its opening day, now according to, the second day has marked a slight drop with a collection of around 2.50-2.75 crore.

Keeping the occasion of Muharram and Onam in mind, trade analysts believe the day 2 collection will be towards the lower end of the above range unless the eastern markets trend better. On the other hand, the spy-thriller has made some growth in the Delhi NCR region, while not much in Punjab. Similarly, Gujarat and Rajasthan are recording a drop, however, Hyderabad is likely to show better results in the post-covid time.

However, with cinemas being shut in Maharashtra due to safety reasons amid the COVID-19 outbreak in India, the film has missed out on business in the state.

Talking about the film team’s decision to release the film in other parts of the country, leaving out one of its biggest markets-Maharashtra, Akshay told BT, “I think this decision, and rightly so, belongs to the person whose money is riding on it. So, even in the case of BellBottom, it was Vashuji’s decision to go ahead with the theatrical release of the film and we all respected that. Of course, it would’ve been a more favourable scenario had theatres in Maharashtra opened up, because anyway, as per the norms, it would’ve been 50% occupancy, so you’re already losing out a huge chunk. And now, with Maharashtra territory not opening up, which accounts for nearly 30% of the business, it is going to be a tough battle. But Vashuji is a brave man, he’d made up his mind that come rain or sunshine, this time, we wouldn’t budge from the planned release date.”

Directed by Ranjit Tewari, ‘Bell Bottom’ is based on the true events of a hijack set in 1984. Apart from Akshay Kumar, the film also stars Vaani Kapoor and Lara Dutta in the lead roles. Huma Qureshi is also seen in a pivotal role.

‘Aquaman 2’ Producer On Not Removing Amber Heard From Film

‘Aquaman 2′ producer Peter Safran rejected the social media campaign driven by Johnny Depp fans to remove his estranged wife and actor Amber Heard for the DC sequel in the wake of the actors’ tumultuous divorce.

According to a report, a social media drive led by Johnny Depp supporters has been constantly demanding removal of Amber from the much-awaited ‘Aquaman 2’ after Warner Bros. released Depp from the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel, with actor Mads Mikkelsen taking over the role of Gellert Grindelwald.

Dismissing the social media drive by Depp’s supporters, Peter explained why the creative team didn’t go with the idea of removing Amber from the movie.

“I don’t think we’re ever going to react to, honestly, pure fan pressure, you gotta do what’s best for the movie. We felt that if it’s [director] James Wan and [star] Jason Momoa, it should be Amber Heard. That’s really what it was,” Peter told Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast.

“One is not unaware of what is going on in the Twitter-verse, but that doesn’t mean you have to react to it or take it as gospel or accede to their wishes. You have to do what’s right for the film, and that’s really where we landed on it,” he added.

Amber has kept a low profile since her ex-husband, Depp lost a legal battle over libel in the UK in November 2020. The superstar actor, who Amber accused of abuse, sued a British newspaper after they labelled him a ‘wife-beater’.

Last November, Amber who plays aquatic warrior Mera in the franchise described the protests in an interview with Entertainment Weekly as “paid rumors and paid campaigns on social media” that “don’t dictate [casting decisions] because they have no basis in reality. Only the fans actually made Aquaman and Aquaman 2 happen. I’m excited to get started next year.”

‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ is slated for release on December 16, 2022.

The actor was recently seen as a police officer in Gopichand Malineni’s Krack, so it remains to be seen how this character will be different from that one. The pre-look of the film also hinted at it being set in another era. It saw the actor sitting at a wooden desk with his declaration making up the backdrop. Further details are awaited.

Cannes Documentary On Cinema Evolution Cites Five Indian films

Five Indian films, all made in Mumbai but disparate in spirit and substance, feature in Belfast-born, Edinburgh-based filmmaker and critic Mark Cousins’ stimulating 160-minute documentary, ‘The Story of Film: A New Generation’.

Made during the pandemic and studded with memorable movie moments, the documentary had its world premiere on the opening day of the 74th Cannes Film Festival as if to tell the world that cinema is, and will always be, alive, no matter what adversity it faces.

‘The Story of Film: A New Generation’, a part of the Cannes Classics section, opens with a shot of the new cinematheque in Madrid, a symbol of hope and renewal for diehard lovers of a medium that is nothing if not dynamic.

‘A New Generation’, a follow-up to Cousins’ 15-hour magnum opus ‘The Story of Film: An Odyssey’ (2011), tracks the creative innovations, technological advancements, and new ways of seeing in an image-intensive, attention-deficient digital age.

Besides covering the last decade of American and European cinema, it focuses extensively on Asian and Arab films. It also touches upon the pandemic, too, and ruminates on its repercussions: lockdowns, face masks, and social distancing.

The riveting, thought-provoking overview of ‘the new millennium of movies’ cites Anurag Kashyap’s five-hour ‘Gangs of Wasseypur‘, Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘PK‘, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Goliyon ki Rasleela Ram-Leela‘, Anand Gandhi’s ‘Ship of Theseus’ and Anand Patwardhan’s brilliant documentary ‘Reason’ among the most important films of the current era.

‘A New Generation’ is written, photographed, and narrated by Cousins. It covers a dizzying array of films and probes the evolution of the key movie genres, the extensions of film language, the centrality of faces in cinema, the explosion of streaming platforms and communication devices, and the advent of performance capture and de-aging tools.

Beginning with ‘Joker’ and ‘Frozen’, it encompasses a diverse range of films – from ‘Cemetery of Splendour’, ‘Parasite’ and ‘Shoplifters’ to ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Midsommar’, and from ‘Norte, the End of History’, ‘Holy Motors’ and ‘An Elephant Sitting Still to Hustlers’, ‘Gravity’ and ‘Baby Driver’- to capture the methods and directions of 21st-century cinema.

Cousins sees ‘Gangs of Wasseypur‘ as “one of the most complex” gangster films in the 80 years since the birth of the genre. A “most elaborately choreographed song” from ‘Ram-Leela’ featuring Ranveer Singh figures in the film.

The documentarian, whose credits include ‘Women Make Film’ (2018) and ‘The Eyes of Orson Welles’, also notes “the colours… and musical energy” of another Bollywood number, this one from ‘PK’, with Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt.

The filmmaker describes a “tonal shift” in PK as “one of the biggest… in contemporary cinema”. He regards ‘Reason’ as one of the most significant documentary films of our times and identifies a “moment” in Patwardhan’s film as “one of the bravest… in recent cinema”.

‘Ship of Theseus’, with its theme of ailment, healing, and renewal, is held up as a cinematic exemplar of the transitions that mankind is witnessing today as it sits on the cusp of a process that could change it beyond recognition.

Cousins makes a special mention of films that point a finger at our inhumanity and our refusal to learn the lessons of history.

Cousins has another film in Cannes Classics this year – ‘The Storms of Jeremy Thomas’, a documentary on the prolific British producer who has over the past five decades collaborated with a few of the world’s greatest filmmakers, notably Bernardo Bertolucci, Nagisa Oshima, Wim Wenders, Lars von Trier, and David Cronenberg.

Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, Stars Ranveer Singh And Alia

Karan Johar announced his return to feature film direction after five years with a ‘love story that is deeply embedded in the roots of family’. His next, titled Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles.

Taking to Instagram, Karan Johar announced Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, along with a motion poster. “Thrilled to get behind the lens with my favorite people in front of it! Presenting Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, headlined by none other than Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt and written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan & Sumit Roy,” he wrote. He also mentioned that the film will be out in 2022.

In a video shared on his Instagram account on Monday, Karan Johar said that in the last few years, his focus has been on making the Dharma brand grow, but now, he wishes to ‘go back to (his) favourite place’ – on a film set.

“The last five years for me have been about making Dharma Productions, Dharmatic Entertainment, Dharma Cornerstone Agency (DCA), Dharma 2.0 grow and push the cinematic boundaries through the lens of new and talented filmmakers. But personally, my primary passion always lies behind the camera. Telling stories, creating a world filled with a multitude of colours, eternal music, emotions,” Karan said.

“And I feel it’s time to go back to my favourite place, onset, and to create what I adore the most – love stories. I am extremely excited to announce my next film tomorrow – a love story that is deeply embedded in the roots of family. I hope to seek all your wishes and blessings as I begin this journey,” he added.

Since Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Karan has directed two short films in the Netflix anthologies Lust Stories and Ghost Stories. He announced his next directorial venture, Takht, in 2018. However, it has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Takht, an ambitious period drama set in the Mughal era, will star Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar. During an Instagram live last month, Karan said that he will begin work on the film after he wraps up Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.

Swaalina’s Big Interview About The Controversies Surrounding The film Shooter: Check Out

Swaalina is a famous face of the Punjabi music world. The model-actress made her debut in the industry with ‘Prada’ in 2018 and since then there has been no looking back. And though the actress is not a fluent Punjabi speaker, she was roped in to play the lead in one of the much anticipated Pollywood movies – ‘Shooter’. Starring her and Jayy Randhawa, the movie had its fair share of ups and downs.
In Swaalina’s BigInterview, the actress opened up about how her journey from Punjabi music to movies happened; she also spoke about the controversies surrounding the film and much more.
Check out:

What made you fall for the Punjabi music industry?

Before I entered the Punjabi music industry, I was already doing TV commercials. My first TV commercial was with Shahrukh Khan for a beauty product, which was a dream come true. Then one day I got a call from a director for a music video, initially, I said ‘no’ straight up that this is not what I’m looking for. But he was persistent and I asked him to send the song. I heard it and really liked the song. Though at the time I didn’t understand the track except for the word ‘ Prada’.. haha .. since it’s a popular brand and also Bentley. I liked the song and sound so I went ahead and that song ended up being the biggest song of 2018.

I wouldn’t have thought in my wildest dreams thought that I would be doing something in the Punjabi industry, mainly because I didn’t know the language at all. For me, the dream was always Bollywood and Hindi. I did not know that another industry like Pollywood existed, but after ‘Prada’ it just opened up another perspective and new doors. So much love I received from Punjab that I myself fell in love with the place, people, and culture.

Recalling your first video shoot – what are the things you feel you aced at, and what are the things you think you could have done better?

I wouldn’t change anything in the first music video because everything was put together so well in that video. I managed to ace the expression and being true to the feel of the track that everyone would relate to. Yes, it received a lot of love. Moreover, every experience is unique especially the first ones. So I wouldn’t change anything about it.

How would you describe your journey so far?

It’s been amazing, I’ve received so much love from the people of Punjab and everywhere, I could have never imagined. They welcomed me with open arms, gave me all the love that an artist would ever wish for. It’s a dream come true, definitely. There’s so much more to do and give back to the people of Punjab, I am really looking forward to all the exciting adventures.

You have been in the industry for a long now, and you took your own time before making your Pollywood debut, why so?

After ‘Prada’, I kept on doing music videos, I wanted to experience more and know the language, people, and culture. I didn’t want to be someone who doesn’t understand the language and relies on dubbing and other techniques. I think that would be unfair to the audience. I’m a person who does things with all my heart. I didn’t think I was ready to just jump on a role in a movie where I don’t give my 100 percent.
Even for the music videos, I only do songs that I resonate with and connect with, and that’s one of the reasons they do well. It’s not about the financial aspect, it’s more about the art and respect towards it.

How did ‘Shooter’ happen?

I was already doing music videos and a lot of producers and directors started connecting with offers but the issue was because I wasn’t a Punjabi girl and didn’t speak the language, which used to be a challenge. So here, I was given 15 days to learn the language, if I could speak fluent Punjabi then I was in. I told the makers, sure give me 15 days. I took up the challenge, and worked day and night over those 15 days, locked myself in a room, studied Punjabi, watched a lot of films, hired a tutor. I didn’t do anything else, just studied the language. I feel language is a door to the culture. After around 13/14 days, I recorded a Punjabi monologue I had written myself in the language. I sent it to the makers, and they were quite impressed. Maybe they weren’t expecting me to come back with this. But for me it was a dream, I love acting and really wanted that.
The next day I was told we were shooting. It was crazy and one of the best experiences.

‘Shooter’ is based on the life of an infamous gangster, so did you get comments like – you should perhaps not do the movie because it is controversial.

Like I’ve mentioned, I was finalized for the role just a day before. I heard the script and thought there is a strong message there. I didn’t feel it was promoting weapons or weaponry. I took it positively. When we were about to release, there was a ban put on the film and even before that, I started getting some threatening calls which I had to avoid. Artists express through art, and the film had a message. Unfortunately, the film got leaked which was a lot of hard work from the team which I feel when the film releases, will be paid off. And yes, I do not encourage any weaponry or violence. It’s a real-life story and that’s all it is about.

Tell us about some BTS fun moments from the sets of the movie
I had never been on a Punjabi movie set before, this one from my first day. I was so nervous I couldn’t sleep the previous night. On the sets, I was in my vanity when the Asst. Director gave me the script saying, you’re shot next, this is the opening scene. The script was long and this was also the ‘Thet Punjabi’, not the modern city Punjabi. I quickly started learning them while the makeup was going on. The magical moment was when I went to set and delivered the lines. Everyone was impressed, I guess they were expecting me to fumble or not catch up quickly. So, it was something new for me and it felt really good, felt amazing.

Describe Jayy Randhawa as an actor and person
I did not know Jayy Randhawa personally, but I had seen photos and videos of him since he was a VJ and singer. On the sets, I was standing there with the braided hair ready to go for a take, waiting. There was a guy, who came about and said Hi! I’m Jayy. I was really shocked, he was looking like a totally different person I could not recognize him because he had to go through a transformation and he had to lose a lot of weight. I think he was around 46 kgs. As an actor, you really need guts to undergo such transformation, have so much discipline and dedication to the art. I think everyone applauded. As an actor, he’s very easy to work with, he helped me a lot. He a good person, very kind and helpful.

Did the delay in the release of ‘Shooter’ ever make you doubt the project?
I believe, that everything happens for a reason. There is a time for every situation and nothing is an accident. Even at this point, I believe that the film has a strong message and is based on a real-life story. I’m sure once the movie releases, everyone will get to watch it. I would encourage everyone to go and watch, it’ll be a different experience altogether.

“Satyanarayan Ki Katha” Starring Kartik Aaryan To Get A New Title

Kartik Aaryan announced his next big project, Satyanarayan Ki Katha helmed by Sameer Vidwans last month. The film is an epic musical love story and is all set to go on the floors by the end of this year. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Named Pictures, the filmmakers have decided to change the title of the film as it did not go down well with the netizens.

Issuing a statement regarding the same, director Sameer Vidwans posted, “A title of the film is something that emerges organically through the creative process. We have taken a decision to change the title of ur recently announced film ‘Satyanarayan ki Katha’ to avoid hurting sentiments even if that’s purely unintentional. Producers of the film and the creative team also are in complete support of this decision. We will be announcing a new title for our love story in the due course of our journey.”

He had earlier spoken of his choice of casting Kartik in the lead and said, “The film is again a unique moving love story. It will bring out a facet of Kartik Aaryan’s talent that audiences haven’t seen so far. Kartik is an immensely talented actor. I wanted only him for this role.”

Haseen Dillruba Movie Review: Only Lovers Left Alive

Haseen Dillruba Movie Review Rating: 2.5/5 Stars (Two and a half stars)

Star Cast: Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, Harshvardhan Rane, Aditya Srivastava, Yamini Das, Daya Shankar Pandey, Ashish Verma

Director: Vinil Mathew

Available On: Netflix

It starts with a gas cylinder blast killing Rishu (Vikrant Massey) and making his wife Rani (Taapsee Pannu) a prime suspect in the case. Jwalapur’s Rishu is the stereotypical electrical engineer found in the jokes of stand-up comedians who hasn’t had any sex in his college and could marry the first girl he sees. Rani (Taapsee Pannu) has had a fair share of broken relationships in the past but finally decides to settle down with Rishu in an arranged marriage.

An ardent fan of mystery-erotica comic writer Dinesh Pandit, Rani, gets too bold to handle by the innocent, pill-popping Rishu. Their contrasting personalities restrict them from coming closer and enters Neel (Harshvardhan Rane). Rishu’s cousin Neel is the man straight out of Rani’s lusty fantasies. He arrives as someone Rani could identify with, eventually falling for him.

Rani’s life turns upside down when she confesses her liking for Neel. How all of this might end up killing Nishu? Well, you either have to watch this film or read a novel by a ‘fictional’ writer Dinesh Pandit to know what actually happens next.

Haseen Dillruba Movie Review: Script Analysis

Kanika Dhillon indeed takes a leaf or two from Satyajit Ray’s Charulata when she shows a bored ‘ardent reader’ wife falling for a cousin of her good-at-heart-yet-lacking husband. After penning movies like Manmarziyaan, Judgementall Hai Kya, writing dark & deranged relationships is Dhillon’s space now. Taking the same route in Haseen Dillruba, Dhillon keeps on peeling layers of her leads in a way that might not come across as rational at times.

She gives the ‘bubble burst’ joke to Rishu’s 70-odd-year-old mother living in Jwalapur. Here, she misses to shape the story around her characters but instead tweaks them to serve the purpose of the narrative. Great performances solidly back certain twists, but they’re too few to fill in the mighty 130 minutes the film asks from you.

One of the best things about Radhika Apte’s Phobia was how Jayakrishna Gummadi captured the protagonist’s mind through his sharp camerawork. Jayakrishna continues to impress with his reliable frame selection. It must’ve been extremely tough for Editor Shweta Venkat Mathew to chop out the clutter finding a flat base. Because the story tackles multiple genres in mystery, drama, crime, romance & Kanika feeding dough to every single one of them drags the story. The extra stretched 20 minutes hurts the grip attained by some establishes plot twists & performances.

Haseen Dillruba Movie Review: Star Performance

Taapsee Pannu is now at the level where she can actually take the risks of opting for good roles in mediocre projects. She’s as good as someone can get for a character like Rani. With every passing project, one thing Taapsee guarantees in her every film is ‘good acting’. She just can’t go wrong until she wakes up one day and decide to do Judwaa 3 for some reason (don’t cancel me, it’s a joke!).

The same goes for Vikrant Massey, who has reliably been good in all of his films (except Dolly, Kitty…) delivers a decent performance yet again. He gets the best character arc of all, and he gives not a single reason why he doesn’t deserve that. Despite being ladened with a thick beard, he retains the expressive bits of his face especially using his devouring eyes.

Harshvardhan Rane gets the weakest character of three. He is one of those actors I believe could do wonders if he gets placed in a right film. This isn’t that movie for him. He still owns his presence on the screen, no matter with whom he’s sharing it. Aditya Srivastava’s part is too weak to do justice to any good actor. He just doesn’t get his moment throughout the movie. Yamini Das is outstanding as the desi mother of Vikrant’s Rishu. Apart from the ‘bubble burst’ joke, she is the comic relief that deserved more limelight. You could’ve taken anyone else other than Daya Shankar Pandey, Ashish Verma for their roles; it still wouldn’t have mattered.

Sidebar: Haseen Dillruba has double L in its spelling, changing the usual spelling with single L. Writer Kanika Dhillon’s Judgementall Hai Kya also had the same thing with double LL tweaking the original spelling of Judgemental. I know that was Ekta Kapoor; this is just a useless easter egg I wanted to point out at.

Haseen Dillruba Movie Review: Direction, Music

Though I totally understand how solid this story must’ve sounded on paper, the somewhat flawed execution takes away the spark. The ‘Hasee Toh Phasee‘ fan in me knew there wouldn’t be any shortcomings from Vinil & that’s indeed the case. Direction isn’t the cause of bothering; the story he’s directing is. He keeps the visual charm of the film intact for a long time; the narration takes away the cake.

This is a bad day at the office for Amit Trivedi as well. If you don’t want to listen to a single Trivedi song on loop after a film with his songs, there’s surely something not right. Amar Mangrulkar’s background score stays right in between getting too chaotic going all-silent.

Haseen Dillruba Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, despite all the gritty elements it possesses, Kanika Dhillon‘s story tries extremely hard to touch & nail too many genres, eventually exploding right at the end. All this needed was cutting short 20 minutes, establishing a substantial footprint in at least one of the many things attempted.
