Riveting ‘Alanganallur’ Jallikattu enthralls, bulls outshine men
Madurai (TN): The bull taming sport, ‘Jallikattu’ at Alanganallur here was held on Tuesday with traditional sporting fervour and though streams of energetic young men raced against time to dominate the robust bulls, the beasts outperformed the humans.
As the bulls jumped and leapt forward from the ‘Vadivasal,’ the entrance to the sporting arena, men on the sideways tried to embrace the bulls by clinging on to the hump. Clad in bright T-shirt and trousers, dozens of bull tamers lined up on both sides of the entrance in what turned out to be a test of endurance.
Similar Jallikattu events were held elsewhere as well, including one at Vanniyan Viduthi in Pudukkottai district. In another event in Pudukkottai, a person was feared dead after a bull hit him.
