PM Modi launches Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, AMRUT 2.0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) 2.0 and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 at Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi.

New Delhi [India], October 1 : Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 have been designed to realise the aspiration to make all our cities ‘Garbage Free’ and ‘Water Secure’. Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri was also present at the event.
Addressing the occasion, Puri said, “Swachh Bharat Mission has succeeded not only because of lakhs of toilets or bringing waste processing to 70 per cent but also because PM Modi made this project into a ‘Jan Andolan'”
These flagship missions signify a step forward in our march towards effectively addressing the challenges of rapidly urbanizing India and will also help contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, said the PMO.


According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 envisions to make all cities ‘Garbage Free’ and ensure grey and black water management in all cities other than those covered under AMRUT, make all urban local bodies as Open Defecation Free + (ODF+) and those with a population of less than 1 lakh as ODF++, thereby achieving the vision of safe sanitation in urban areas. The Mission will focus on source segregation of solid waste, utilizing the principles of 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), scientific processing of all types of municipal solid waste and remediation of legacy dumpsites for effective solid waste management. The outlay of SBM-U 2.0 is around Rs 1.41 lakh crore.
The AMRUT 2.0 aims to provide 100 per cent coverage of water supply to all households in around 4,700 urban local bodies by providing about 2.68 crore tap connections and 100 per cent coverage of sewerage and septage in 500 AMRUT cities by providing around 2.64 crore sewer/ septage connections, which will benefit more than 10.5 crore people in urban areas. AMRUT 2.0 will adopt the principles of circular economy and promote conservation and rejuvenation of surface and groundwater bodies. The Mission will promote data-led governance in water management and technology Sub-Mission to leverage latest global technologies and skills. ‘Pey Jal Survekshan’ will be conducted to promote progressive competition among cities. The outlay of AMRUT 2.0 is around Rs 2.87 lakh crore.
Highlighting the impact of the two mission, PMO further said SBM-U and AMRUT have contributed significantly to improve urban landscape during the last seven years. The two flagship missions have augmented the capacity to deliver basic services of water supply and sanitation to the citizens. Swachhta has become a Jan Andolan today. All urban local bodies have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) and 70 per cent solid waste is being scientifically processed now. AMRUT has been ensuring water security by adding 1.1 crore household water tap connections and 85 lakh sewer connections, thus benefiting more than 4 crore people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the aim of Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 is to make the cities garbage-free. Speaking at the launch of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) 2.0 and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, PM Modi said,” In 2014, the countrymen took a pledge to make India open defecation free – ODF. The countrymen fulfilled this pledge with the construction of more than 10 crore toilets. Now, the goal of ‘Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0’ is to make Garbage-Free City, a city completely free of garbage.” PM Modi said that the journey of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and AMRUT Mission so far is going to make every countryman proud.
He further said that the country’s target in the next phase of Mission AMRUT is ‘Increasing sewage and septic management, making our cities water safe cities’ and ensuring that no sewage drains anywhere in our rivers.”
“The achievements under the SBM prove how dedicated every citizen is towards his or her responsibility. Our cleaning staff are real heroes of this initiative. What the country has achieved through Swachh Bharat Mission assures us that how sensitive every Indian is for his duties, how alert he is,” PM Modi added.


The Prime Minister said that with this second phase, the country also aims at sewage and safety management, making cities water-secure and ensuring that dirty nullahs don’t merge into rivers.
He further said that the second phase of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and AMRUT 2.0 is also an important step in fulfilling the dreams of BR Ambedkar.
“It’s our privilege that today’s program has been organised at BR Ambedkar Center. He believed that urban development was pivotal to equality. Babasaheb’s great emphasis was on changing this situation, on removing this inequality. The next phase of Swachh Bharat Mission and Mission Amrit is also an important step towards fulfilling the dreams of Babasaheb,” he said.
Narendra Modi further said that Babasaheb believed in urban development as a great means of removing inequality.
“Many people from villages come to cities in the aspiration of a better life. We know that they get employment but their standard of living remains in a difficult situation even in villages,” said PM.

India processing 70 pc of daily waste, aims to process 100 pc: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday pointed out that India is processing about 1 lakh tonnes of waste every day, which is 70 per cent of the daily waste produced by the country.
He stated that the Central government aims to process 100 per cent of the daily waste produced. “Today India is processing about 1 lakh tonnes of waste every day. When we started the campaign in 2014, less than 20 per cent of the waste was being processed. Today we are processing about 70 per cent of daily waste. Now we have to take it to 100 per cent,” the Prime Minister said while launching the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) 2.0 and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 here.
“The garbage mountains in cities will be processed and removed completely as part of Swachhta second phase. One such garbage mountain has been in Delhi for long, it is also waiting to be removed,” he said.
PM Modi further lauded the youth and children of the nation for creating awareness about cleanliness.
“Today’s generation has taken the lead to strengthen the cleanliness campaign. Toffee wrappers are no more thrown on floors but kept in pockets. Kids alert elders not to litter around. The youth are taking initiative. Some are earning wealth from waste, while some are creating awareness.”
“People have started keeping separate dustbins for dry and wet waste. There is awareness,” he said.
He also called upon all the state governments, mayors and local administrations to actively get back to the cleanliness mission.
“We must remember that Swachhta is not working of one day or one person or one year, it is an initiative that runs daily over generations. It is a way of life,” the Prime Minister stated.
