Mammootty Turns 70: Evergreen Songs Of The Megastar

Megastar Mammootty has turned 70 today. Mammootty who stepped into the world of cinema as a teenager has been entertaining the audience for over five decades now, Beginning his career as a junior artist in 1971 with ‘Anubhavangal Paalichakal’, Mammootty has completed 50 years in cinema, and during this time span, he has been part of some exceptional films. He has also been fortunate to be a part of some chartbuster songs.

As Mammootty is celebrating his birthday today, let’s take a look at some tuneful Malayalam songs which featured the birthday boy!

Enthinu Veroru Sooryodayam
Mammootty has been part of some extraordinary love stories and ‘Mazhayethum Munpe’ is one among them. The actor roped into the shoes of Nandakumar Varma, a professor, who is deeply in love with Uma (Shobana). ‘Enthinu Veroru Sooryodayam’ is an evergreen melody from the movie. Raveendran master has composed the song and KJ Yesudas, and KS Chithra crooned the melodious number.

Olathumpathu

‘Olathumpathu’ song from the 1992 film ‘Pappayude swantham appoos’ is probably the only lullaby the millennials and Gen Z’s from Kerala has ever heard growing up. The song gained so much popularity that each and every Malayali mother is familiar with the song. ‘Olathumpathu’ was written by Bichu Thirumala and Ilaiyaraaja composed the song. KJ Yesudas has given voice to the soothing lullaby.

Vennilachandhana Kinnam

The 1996 Kamal’s directorial ‘Azhakiya Ravanan’ featured Mammootty in quite an unusual avatar. Mammootty roped in as Kuttishankaran aka Shankar Das. Shankar is a perfect representation of rag to riches but has all the nuances of a villager, loves to boast and his only aim is to win back his childhood crush. ‘Vennilachandhana Kinnam’ portrays the love Shankar has for his Anuradha (Bhanupriya). This melody was penned by Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri and Vidyasagar composed it. KJ Yesudas and Shabnam crooned the lovely song. The melody is sure to melt your heart.

Thankamanassu

‘Thankamanassu’ song from ‘Rappakal’ consolidates the divine bond between a mother and her child. The song was written by Kaithapram Damodaran and Mohan Sithara has composed the song. P Jayachandran’s graceful voice has elevated the song a notch higher!

Kalarivilakku Thelinjathaano

‘Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha’, released in 1989 is a crucial film in Mammootty’s career. The film was helmed by veteran filmmaker Hariharan. The film featured Mammootty as the Chandu Chekavar and ‘Kalarivilakku Thelinjathaano’ song describes him. Kaithapram has penned the lyrics and Bombay Ravi is the composer. KS Chitra has lent voice to the magnificent song.

Njanoru Pattu Paadam

Mammootty is a phenomenal actor and there’s no doubt about that. The Megastar also has an exceptional talent of beautifully lip-syncing to songs and ‘Njanoru Pattu Paadam’ is an example! The song is from the film ‘Megham’ and it picturises Lieutenant Colonel Ravi Varma exploring the countryside. Gireesh Puthenchery has penned the lyrics, for which Ouseppachan has composed the music and KJ Yesudas is the singer.

Niranaazhi Ponnil

‘Valyettan’ is one of the most commercial films from Mammootty. The song ‘Niranaazhi Ponnil’ depicts Arakkal Madhavanunni (Mammootty) and his younger brothers celebrating Onam. The lyrics are written by Gireesh Puthenchery and the music is composed by Mohan Sitara. MG Sreekumar has sung the song.
