Mamata pays homage to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary

Kolkata, Aug 20: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday paid heartfelt

homage to former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary.

Taking to her social media page, Ms Banerjee said, “Heartfelt homage to former Prime

Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary.”

Born on this day in 1944, Rajiv Gandhi served as the sixth prime minister of India, from

1984 to 1989.

He took office after the 1984 assassination of his mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi,

to become the youngest Indian prime minister at the age of 40.

In 1991, the central government posthumously awarded Gandhi the Bharat Ratna, the

country’s highest civilian award. At the India Leadership Conclave in 2009, the Revolutionary

Leader of Modern India award was conferred posthumously on Gandhi.

He was assassinated by the LTTE during an election campaign in 1991
