Justice V M Kanade, new Lokayukta of Maharashtra

Mumbai, Aug 19: Bombay High Court’s retired judge V M Kanade on Thursday took charge as the new Lokayukta of Maharashtra.

Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari administered the oath of office to Justice Kanade amid the presence of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Upa-Lokayukta Sanjay Bhatia and other top dignitaries.

Justice Kanade, 66, succeeds Justice M L Tahaliyani, whose term as Lokayukta ended in Aug. 2020.

Starting his practice as a lawyer in the Bombay High Court from June 1979, Justice Kanade later worked as a HC Panel Counsel for Union of India from 1986-1999, as an Assistant Government Pleader from 1988-1990 in the Writ Cell and as ‘A’ Panel Counsel for State of Maharashtra from 1992-2000, appearing on behalf of various government corporations.

In October 2001, he was elevated as a judge of Bombay HC, served as Acting Chief Justice briefly in December 2015.

In January 2016, he was the Chairman of the Government Law College Governing Council and Administrator of Maharashtra Cricket Association from March-Sep. 2018.
