  • Italy Tightens Restrictions For Unvaccinated Travellers: Covid-19
In a bid to control the spread of COVID-19, Italy has tightened curbs on unvaccinated travellers. Such travellers will have limited access to several places and services. The discovery of the Omicron has made things difficult for the tourism sector everywhere. But in Italy, the number of COVID-19 cases have been on a rise. The new guidelines introduced by Italy allow only fully vaccinated people or those who have recently recovered from COVID-19 to access indoor seating at bars and restaurants. Only such people are allowed to visit museums in the country or go to cinemas and clubs. Unvaccinated people will get a basic green health pass after testing negative for COVID-19 in PCR test taken within the past 48 hours. The country police have also started enforcing the various measures from the early hours. If anyone is caught travelling without a health certificate on a bus, metro, tram or train, they’ll be slapped with an automatic 400-euro (USD 450) fine. Italy in Europe has the highest vaccine rates with 80 percent of the population receiving either one or two jabs. Another 15 percent of people have had a booster shot. The country has seen a spike in COVID-19 infections in recent weeks, and on Sunday the number reached 15000. Rome has tightened the weekend curbs and made face masks necessary to be worn outdoors, or at shopping streets. In 2020, Italy was the […]
  • Researchers Develop Chewing Gum That Can Reduce SARS-CoV-2 Transmission
A team of researchers has developed a chewing gum that is laced with a plant-grown protein serving as a “trap” for the SARS-CoV-2 virus and could reduce its transmission. The study has been published in the ‘Molecular Therapy Journal’. The work, led by Henry Daniell at Penn’s School of Dental Medicine and performed in collaboration with scientists at the Perelman School of Medicine and School of Veterinary Medicine, as well as at The Wistar Institute and Fraunhofer USA, could lead to a low-cost tool in the arsenal against the COVID-19 pandemic. “SARS-CoV-2 replicates in the salivary glands, and we know that when someone who is infected sneezes, coughs or speaks some of that virus can be expelled and reach others,” said Daniell. “This gum offers an opportunity to neutralize the virus in the saliva, giving us a simple way to possibly cut down on a source of disease transmission,” he added. Vaccinations for COVID-19 have helped change the course of the pandemic but haven’t stamped out transmission. Even people who are fully vaccinated can still become infected with SARS-CoV-2 and, according to recent research, can carry a viral load similar to those who are unvaccinated. Prior to the pandemic, Daniell had been studying the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) protein in the context of treating hypertension. His lab had grown this protein, as well as many others that may have therapeutic potential, using a patented […]
  • Hamburger In Golden Veil
If you think that a Hamburger belongs to the junk food fraternity popular only with kids or it is a toxic product exported by the neo-imperialist USA weaponizing food to conquer the world, then you are mistaken. The patty in the bun that started its journey on a pushcart or kiosk in NY more than a century back has come a long way. Today, in India, it is pushing gems from royal kitchens off the high table. Forget the Golden Arches that mass-produced (like T-Model Ford cars) the aspirational Mc Dee that defined with Coke quintessential America. Its price may continue to be used as the convenient measure of ‘purchase power parity’ to compare the state of the economy in different countries but it can no longer claim to be the gold standard. The Age of Artisanal Hamburger has dawned, and the Gold Draped Louis Burger has arrived. Don’t be misled by the name. It is a khalis deshi child of this soil. It’s a creation of Zorawar Kalra, who has conceived this as a tribute to Louis Lassen who introduced, some say seduced, the world to burgers. India has never felt shy of making its own influences and ingredients received from diverse sources and Royale is no exception. The 24-carat drape is not just eye-candy it announces subtly that what is undercover is an assortment of expensive, exotic ingredients imported cheeses- Swiss Emmental, […]
