Cong likely to appoint two Deputy CMs along with CM in Punjab: Sources

After Congress MLAs passed a resolution allowing Sonia Gandhi to name Captain Amarinder Singh’s successor as he stepped down as the Chief Minister of Punjab, sources have indicated that there is a possibility of appointing two Deputy Chief Ministers along with the Chief Minister.

Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], September 19 : Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as the chief minister of Punjab on Saturday following months of infighting between him and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Navjot Singh Sidhu. Sources close to Sidhu said, “Whatever name is agreed for the Chief Minister, it will be accompanied by two deputy Chief Ministers. However, the decisions of Deputy Chief Ministers will depend on who has been named as the Chief Minister.”
This development is witnessed just months before the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections

Ambika Soni cites health reasons; declines Punjab CM post offer: Sources

Congress leader Ambika Soni on Sunday declined the offer for the post of the next Punjab chief minister, sources said. Citing health reasons, Ambika Soni today said she is not keeping well and does not wish to take up the post. This came after Amarinder Singh on Saturday resigned as Punjab chief minister, saying he felt “humiliated” at the way the party handled the infighting in the state unit.

A resolution requesting Sonia Gandhi to pick the next chief minister was passed unanimously in a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party. Party sources said the name of the new leader is likely to be announced in a CLP meeting on Sunday.

Meanwhile, former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar, current state unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa are frontrunners for the post of the CLP leader, the sources said.

Names of Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Brahm Mohindra, Vijay Inder Singla, Punjab Congress working president Kuljit Singh Nagra and MP Partap Singh Bajwa are also doing the rounds.

Some sources, however, have said the Navjot Singh Sidhu was not in contention for the next CLP leader.

Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken, who was one of the two central observers deputed by the party, informed the media after the meeting Saturday evening that 78 out of total of 80 party legislators were present in the CLP meeting, which he called was “very important”.

He said a resolution praising and thanking the contribution of Amarinder Singh towards Punjab and the Congress was also unanimously passed at the meeting.
