The Hague [Netherlands]: After a series of attacks on artwork and famous artwork by weather activists throughout Europe, the Dutch court, on Wednesday, despatched two protestors to prison for vandalizing Johannes Vermeer’s portray ‘Girl with a pearl earring’.
According to CNN, the demonstrators, who are part of the marketing campaign institution Just Stop Oil Belgium, have been given sentences of months, considered one of which was suspended. Three climate activists, on October 27, targeted famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece ‘Girl with a pearl earring’ with glue and other kind of liquid.
In a video posted on Twitter, a man could be seen pouring crimson tomato salsa-like liquid over the opposite protestor within the frame who tried gluing his head to the wall before being escorted out of the premises by the authorities. The third person filmed the complete stunt.
The guy may be heard screaming, “How do you experience when you see something lovely and priceless being seemingly destroyed earlier than your eyes? Do you feel outrage? Good. That is the sensation when you see the planet being destroyed before our very eyes.”
According to CNN, in a press launch announcing the ruling, the prosecutors said they had wanted to “ship out a signal” to activists, including: “A paintings striking there for everybody, anybody to revel in, has been smeared by way of (defendants) who felt their message took priority over the whole thing else.”
Prosecutors had asked for four months, with two suspended; however, the decision stated she did not want her sentence to discourage other humans from demonstrating. The men faced costs of destruction and open violence against the painting in a fast-track trial. The third activist, who objected to expedited trial, will appear in court on Friday. According to prosecutors, the three are “mutually accountable” for the act, CNN reported quoting Reuters.
‘Girl with a pearl earring’ is regularly called the ‘Mona Lisa’ of the North! Since 1902, the work has been in the collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague and has been the challenge of numerous literary and cinematic adaptations. It changed into oil-painted by Vermeer in 1665.
The men in the video wore T-shirts that read “Just stop oil” – the identical group whose members spilt soup over Van Gogh’s world-famous ‘Sunflowers’ portray in London, and vandalized King Charles III’s wax statue in Madame Tussauds.
