  • IMD predicts heavy rainfall over Gangetic parts of West Bengal between Dec 4-6
    Kolkata (West Bengal) [India]: Thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall at most places are very likely to occur over the districts of Gangetic West Bengal from December 4 to December 6, 2021, said Indian Meteorological Department on Thursday.On December 4, heavy to very heavy rain (7-20cm) is likely to occur at one or two places over East Midnapore districts, hence an orange alert had been issued in this regard, added IMD.   • West Bengal extends Covid-19 restrictions in wake of Omicron scare
    Kolkata (West Bengal) [India]: West Bengal government on Tuesday extended the COVID-19 restrictions in the state till December 15 in view of the newly detected coronavirus variant Omicron.According to an order issued by the government, all outdoor activities including the movement of people and vehicles will remain prohibited between 11 pm and 5 am except for the health services, law and order and essential commodities that include agricultural products and other emergency services. “Wearing of masks, maintenance of physical distancing and health and hygiene protocol must be followed at all times,” said the order.Meanwhile, amid rising concern about a new COVID-19 variant ‘Omicron’ first detected in South Africa, India added several countries to the list from where travellers would need to follow additional measures on arrival in India, including post-arrival testing for infection.Ministry of Health and Family Welfare adds Hong Kong and Israel to the list of countries from where travellers would need to follow additional measures on arrival in India, including post-arrival testing considering the detection of new COVID variant ‘Omicron’ in South Africa.
  • CM Mamta Banerjee expresses grief over Nadia mishap
    Kolkata (West Bengal) [India]: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee expressed her condolences over the death of 18 people in the Nadia road accident.“Heartbroken to hear about the road accident in Nadia. I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured. May God give them the strength to get past this difficult time,” she tweeted. “Government of West Bengal will extend every necessary assistance and support to the kin of the victims. We are beside you in this sad hour,” the Chief Minister said in another tweet.As per the police officials, at least 18 people were killed and 5 others injured in a road accident that took place in West Bengal’s Phulbari area of Nadia district. The injured people have been shifted to Shaktinagar district hospital.West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has also expressed his grief over the mishap.
  • Kolkata Municipal Corporation polls on Dec 19
    Kolkata (West Bengal) [India]: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections will be held on December 19, a notification issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) on Thursday said.The last date of filing the nominations is December 1. The scrutiny of nomination forms will be done the next day. Candidates can withdraw their names from the fray till December 4.Voting will be held on December 19 from 7 am to 5 pm.The counting of votes will be held on December 21.This will be the first major electoral battle in West Bengal after the May 2021 assembly polls, which the Trinamool Congress won comprehensively.The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC registered a landslide victory in polls winning 213 seats in the 294-member West Bengal assembly. The BJP lost the polls but emerged as the second-largest party with 77 seats.
  • ED attaches Rs 42.36 cr assets of Kolkata-based firm in bank fraud case
    New Delhi [India]: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday attached 11 immovable properties worth Rs 42.36 crore of a Kolkata based company for defrauding State Bank of India to the tune of Rs 164 crore by availing loan on the basis of false documents, the agency said on Monday.The properties belong to the directors of Shree Mahalaxmi Corporation Pvt Ltd, and its assets were attached under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. ED initiated a money-laundering investigation on the basis of FIR dated March 28, 2017, and charge-sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Kolkata on December 30, 2019, under the sections of Indian Penal Code, 1860 and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against Shree Mahalaxmi Corporation, its directors and other persons, for defrauding the State Bank of India to the extent of Rs 164 Crore by availing loan on the basis of false and forged documents and utilising the loan amount for a purpose other than for which it was sanctioned.Investigation under PMLA revealed that loan amount of Rs 164 crore was diverted after rotating amongst the bank accounts maintained by various entities and given colour of genuine business transactions, said the ED.“It was further revealed that various Letters of Credit (LCs) were opened in the name of certain companies against the credit facilities and the same were discounted on the basis of forged invoices, challans […]
  • 5th East Asia Summit Conference on Maritime Security Cooperation to be held in Kolkata
    New Delhi [India]: The fifth East Asia Summit (EAS) conference on Maritime Security Cooperation will be held in Kolkata on November 23-24, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement on Monday.The event is being organized by India in partnership with Australia. According to the statement, apart from the two governments, organizers include the ASEAN-India Centre (AIC) at Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) in collaboration with the National Maritime Foundation (NMF) of Australia and the Research Centre for East and North East Regional Studies, Kolkata (CENERS-K).India will be represented by Riva Ganguly Das, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs.During the conference, experts from both government and academia from the EAS participating countries will deliberate upon various aspects of maritime security cooperation under four thematic sessions, namely maritime security; resource and information sharing; science and technology cooperation; and pandemic and disaster risk reduction and management.   • Two arrested in Kolkata for illegally selling firearms
    Kolkata (West Bengal) [India]: Two men were on Wednesday arrested for allegedly selling firearms and ammunition illegally, after a raid was conducted at Kolkata’s Mominpore, informed the police. The two men have been identified as Sk. Saddam Hossain (18) and Bablu Ari (21 yrs).One single shot of country-made firearms along with two live cartridges was recovered from Hossain for which he could not produce any relevant documents. Hossain who was arrested from Kolkata’s Ekbalpore revealed during interrogation that they carried the firearms and ammunition for the purpose of selling those to the public. Pursuing the statement of Hossain, the police arrested one of his associates namely Bablu Ari from Kolkata’s Taratala. Cases have been registered against the two accused persons under the Arms Act. Both the arrested persons will be produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alipore, South 24 Paraganas on Thursday. (ANI)
  • Kolkata sessions court grants bail to TMC leaders
    Kolkata (West Bengal ) [India] : Kolkata city sessions court on Tuesday granted interim bail to West Bengal Transport Minister Firhad Hakim, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader MLA Madan Mitra, and Ex-Mayor Sovan Chatterjee in the Narada scam on the bond of Rs. 20,000.The next date for them to appear physically is January 28. Earlier on May 10, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has sanctioned the prosecution of Firhad Hakim, Subrata Mukherjee, Madan Mitra and Sovan Chatterjee in the Narada scam being investigated by the CBI.Journalist Mathew Samuel of Narada News, a web portal, had conducted a Narada sting operation in 2014 wherein some people resembling TMC ministers, MPs and MLAs were seen receiving money from representatives of a fictitious company in lieu of favours.The four arrested politicians were ministers in the Mamata Banerjee government at that time. Ahead of the 2016 Assembly elections in West Bengal, the sting operation was made public.
