Bayern Munich wins women’s Bundesliga, ends Wolfburg’s reign

Germany midfielder Linda Dallmann scored twice to help Bayern Munich clinch the women’s Bundesliga title with a 4-0 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. An own-goal from Laura Störzel and a last-minute goal from Lea Schüller — set up by Simone Laudehr in her final game before retirement — ensured Bayern finished the season with 61 points. That’s two more than Wolfsburg, whose 8-0 thrashing of Werder Bremen couldn’t prevent the end of its four-year reign as German champion. Bayern lost only once in the 12-team division all season — at home to Hoffenheim in the 17th round in April — and then kept Wolfsburg at bay with a 1-1 draw in the 20th round last month. Bayern won 20 of its 22 games, while Wolfsburg dropped points in three. The two clubs’ dominance of women’s soccer in Germany goes back to 2012, when…

Japan says US travel warning for virus won’t hurt Olympians

The Japanese government Tuesday was quick to deny a U.S. warning for Americans to avoid traveling to Japan would have an impact on Olympians wanting to compete in the postponed Tokyo Games. U.S. officials cited a surge in coronavirus cases in Japan caused by virus variants that may even be risks to vaccinated people. They didn’t ban Americans from visiting Japan, but the warnings could affect insurance rates and whether Olympic athletes and other participants decide to join the games that begin July 23. Most metro areas in Japan are under a state of emergency and expected to remain so through mid-June because of rising serious COVID-19 cases that are putting pressure on the country’s medical care systems. That raises concern about how the country could cope with the arrival of tens of thousands of Olympic participants if its hospitals remain stressed and little…

Zidane will not leave Real Madrid, says Karim Benzema

Real Madrid star Karim Benzema does not believe head coach Zinedine Zidane will leave Santiago Bernabeu amid growing doubts. Zidane is widely expected to leave Madrid after a second spell in charge of La Liga giants, with former club and Serie A powerhouse Juventus a possible destination. After claiming three consecutive Champions League titles and the La Liga trophy in his first stint, Zidane returned to Madrid in 2019 and delivered another league crown last season. However, Los Blancos were dethroned by city rivals Atletico Madrid this term. As speculation mounts, Benzema told L’Equipe in a full interview to be published on Tuesday: “I don’t see him leaving. He will not leave, you will see.” Madrid ended the 2020-21 season amid an 18-game unbeaten streak (13 wins, five draws) in La Liga — the longest current undefeated run of any team in the competition,…

India’s leading javelin throwers, including Jakarta Asian Games champion and Olympic-bound Neeraj Chopra, will miss the Muller Grand Prix in Gateshead, Great Britain, this month due to pandemic. “We are not going to compete in Great Britain as European nations aren’t issuing visas because of the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic in India. The Gateshead event, scheduled to be held on May 23, is part of the highly competitive Diamond League series sanctioned by World Athletics. On Wednesday, Chopra, 23, raised a concern of missing international competitions due to pandemic. “Due to pandemic we couldn’t compete in 2020. Italian Open: Nadal saves two match points to defeat Shapovalov, Djokovic also advances to quarters

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic reached quarter-finals of the Italian Open in contrasting style here on Thursday. While Nadal struggled to win 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) in a three-and-a-half-hour epic against 13th seed Denis Shapovalov, Djokovic cruised past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2, 6-1. Nadal, the nine-time champion, trailed 0-4 in the opening set, 0-3 in the second and saved two match points late in the third set as Shapovalov took control in their third-round clash. But Nadal grabbed the high-pressure moments and steadily raised his level to secure the victory for a spot in the last eight. This is Nadal’s 16th quarter-final appearance in the tournament. Serb world No. 1 Djokovic, on the other hand, entered quarter-finals for the 15th time in his 15th appearance in the tournament. Djokovic, a five-time champion, broke serve in five of his seven return games to stretch his perfect…

Premier League: Liverpool keep top-4 hopes alive with 4-2 win over Man Utd

The beefed-up defense outside Old Trafford was more robust than Manchester United’s on the pitch inside. While United supporters again protested against the owning Glazer family — facing riot police and new steel barriers to guard the entrances — the game against Liverpool went ahead as planned after being called off 11 days earlier when some fans were able to storm the pitch. United might have wished it hadn’t, losing 4-2 for its first home defeat against its fiercest rival since Jürgen Klopp took charge of Liverpool six years ago after Diogo Jota scored twice. Not only was this United’s third game since Sunday — with this rearranged fixture squeezed into the week — but the players had to get to the stadium much earlier than usual after being unable to leave their hotel on May 2 due to the protests at Old Trafford.…

WTC Final: New Zealand are India’s ‘real discomfort zone’, says Sanjay Manjrekar

India will be appearing in the inaugural World Test Championship final from June 18-22 when they take on New Zealand in Southampton. While India finished on top of the WTC table, The ‘BlackCaps’ were the only outfit that defeated India in a Test series throughout the tournament. India toured New Zealand last year and faced a 2-0 defeat in the Test series. And so, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes that facing Kane Williamson’s men in England, which offers similar playing conditions to those of New Zealand, will be a “much bigger hurdle for India to cross.”  “If the World Test Championship final is held in India, New Zealand would be sent packing by the hosts inside three days, but that it’s going to be played in England, and that too in the first half of the English summer, makes NZ a much bigger hurdle…

UEFA meeting with British government on Champions League final at Wembley

UEFA was meeting virtually with the British government on Monday to discuss the logistics of using Wembley for the all-English Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea. The travel waivers already granted by the government for the UEFA European Championship would have to be brought forward by two weeks to stage the May 29 final of its biggest club competition in London. The showpiece is set to be moved to England’s national soccer stadium from Istanbul after Turkey was added to England’s “red list” of countries of severe coronavirus outbreaks. Switzerland, where UEFA is based, is among the amber list of countries from which people arriving into England have to quarantine for 10 days, albeit organized individually rather than the mandatory hotel isolation in place for arrivals from red-list countries. But UEFA confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday that it has already…
